As one of my Facebook commenters said, “OMFg!! My 8 year old comes home with more accurate sh*t from the playground than this!” And to think, this guy, Mike Frey, a “concerned father and husband,” shared his mind-blowing ignorance with the world as he shared his deep thoughts about why gays and lesbians getting married has something to do to anal sex and AIDS. (HuffPo):
[Please protect your keyboards...]
He claimed that heterosexual sex could be safer because the vagina has a “barrier of cellular tissue that doesn’t allow the sperm … to penetrate the blood flow,” but anal sex doesn’t have such protections.
“When ejaculation occurs inside of a colon, it’s highly absorbent material, the cells do not have a barrier for the sperm and those enzymes to enter into the blood flow,” Frey said. “When the enzymes enter into the blood flow, and a continued, prolonged environment of that happens, these enzymes in the blood flow, it causes what we know as AIDS.”
Watch it:
It’s all good because:
Apparently STDs like syphilis did not exist before the invention of anal sex in the 1980s and women never contracted them. Ever. Because… something…
Weep for America — “Is our children learning?”
Also, I’m sure he wasn’t happy with this development (Think Progress):
As expected, the Minnesota House Civil Law Committee advanced marriage equality legislation tonight with a vote of 10-7, reflecting today’s similar vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill now advances to the full House, but as in the Senate, its potential for passage there is not yet known. Still, that the bill would advance to the floor of both chambers just months after the state defeated a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage speaks to incredible progress in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

That was truly a lopsided debate. I’ve watched them in every state, and this was the poorest performance by the anti-equality crowd. They sound obsessed laughable when they talk about sex and disingenuous when they talk about children. Don’t hide behind kids to make bigoted points. That always looks bad.
Did I miss something or were there NO representatives of the Catholic dioceses of Minnesota speaking? If not, that in and of itself is a victory for us. It’s time the Catholic church realized its anti-gay advocacy is a big loser with Catholic families who want their children, cousins, parents, brothers and sisters to be treated fairly. That advocacy has worsened the already damaged image of the Catholic church.
Lynne Osterman was great. She gave a powerful testimony of her regret for voting against gay marriage when she was in the Minnesota house. And she was speaking directly to legislators who are in her position today. Thank you, Lynne!
Mike Frey needs to come “out of the closet!”
Simple question – how does a non-expert get to present ‘facts’ regarding a subject with which they are not familiar, and did someone else here have the opportunity to respond/debunk this nonsense…??
The misinformation about the vaginal wall having more defenses than the anal one appears to be widespread: I noticed it showing up in the comments thread at the end of WaPo’s “5 myths about AIDS” article last Sunday.
Pam- It COULD happen that way. Maybe…….sometimes……..I think he musta read that on the internet. You know, they ca’nt put anything on the internet that’s not true.
THAT’S what makes America great.
Maybe it’s like that barrier that keeps women who are raped from getting pregnant. I never knew there were so many barriers.
The Minnesota Republican Party has a number of power blocs which tend to overlap, but the two biggest are the Fundagelicals and the Cooper/Seifert Corporatists. Guess which one Frey is?
Meanwhile, Glenn Gone Wild does it again, this time with his ‘ex-gay’ friend: http://my.firedoglake.com/phoenix/2013/03/11/professional-homophobe-confuses-minnesota-house-session-with-first-grade-show-and-tell-brings-friend/
Not sure this is the place for that type of insult.
There are moderators here already. Your tut-tutting is not required.
Buford, it’s a legislative public hearing. Anyone is welcome to come in and give their opinion. I doubt that any of the legislators present considered this guy’s comments to be anything other than reality-free opinion.
He doesn’t even know the function of enzymes. For the record they are catalysts. Enzymes do not cause aids. That is the job of HIV of the family retroviridae genus lentivirus. The ignorance is so bright it makes me blind.
This man is cut from the same cloth as Todd Akin. They use pseudo science to attempt to justify the enforcement of their religious ideology. The problem is these people get into positions of power and can actually use that power to implement their ignorance on the rest of us.
That’s even better than Stacy Campfield’s “man having sex with a monkey, or something.”
