After almost six hours of debate during which over 70 Members of Parliament aired their views, the British House of Commons approved the Equal Marriage bill by a vote of 400 to 175.
The bill, introduced by PM David Cameron, divided the ruling Conservative Party but passed with strong support from Labour Party and Liberal Democrats.
The bill now moves into a period of examination and possible amendment in committee. Bill progress can be monitored here.

Very interesting. Thanks for keeping us updated on this.
The US is looking more backward all the time.
Gee, I wonder if it’s our religious maniacs?
I’m not often proud to be British (given centuries of handing out crap to others), but this makes me smile.
Well, it probably is but the US is inherently backward. Remember 30-40 years ago when they tried to get us on the metric system? Apparently conservatives couldn’t figure out how to count to 10 and kicked up a big enough stink that we didn’t get the change over.
Actually I do think that it’s simply arrogance. Americans don’t *have* to do what the rest of the world does because we are Americans and therefore exceptional. As a result, we don’t have marriage equality, health care, as many days of vacation from work as most industrial countries, etc. We have been conned into thinking that rather than live in a society we have to all make it on our own or we are freeloaders. Never mind that the insurance companies are rich, the oil companies rake in record profits while getting government subsidies, and we don’t have any work holidays between January and May and getting 2 weeks off is considered wonderful. It almost seems like a contest to see who can do the most backbreaking work (if we aren’t 1%-ers), not a contest to see what we can accomplish. Weird at best, sociopathic at worst.
