The stupid, it burns. But it just keeps on coming. I really think that there is something wrong in the head with Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX). Every time he opens his mouth utter nonsense comes out. Today’s classic, from an appearance on the Dennis Miller Show… (via Think Progress):
O’CONNOR: I want to ask you a question about one of your colleagues, Rep. Peter King in New York. He’s a very passionate guy, a great defender, he’s a great patriot. But he’s on board with this assault weapons ban. He was actually on MSNBC yesterday, openly saying, “I don’t understand why anybody would need an assault weapon.” I personally get nervous whenever a politician is asking me as a citizen why I need my right, but can you answer that question for your colleague? He might need some help here. Why would anyone need an assault weapon as they’re defining it?
GOHMERT: I refuse to play the game of “assault weapon.” That’s any weapon. It’s a hammer. It’s the machetes. In Rwanda that killed 800,000 people, an article that came out this week, the massive number that are killed with hammers.
Shall we go after all blunt objects? Not to be topped, the former president of the National Rifle Association, Marion Hammer, goes for the Hail Mary — folks interested in gun control are equivalent to racists. Try to digest this – never mind she’s inaccurate in her attack on the proposed legislation, it’s just insane “logic” (Raw Story):
“Banning people and things because of the way they look went out a long time ago,” Marion Hammer told host Ginny Simone. “But here they are again. The color of a gun. The way it looks. It’s just bad politics.”
According to Media Matters, Hammer’s interview was in response to Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) proposed ban, which is based on a firearm’s capacity, rather than its appearance. However, Simone encouraged Hammer’s inaccurate claim.
“They even admit this is about banning the ugliest guns, it’s about cosmetics and it has nothing to do about how a firearm works,” the host said.

Maybe we should skip the guns and just ban idiots.
But then who would we have hosting talk shows? Or in Congress? (You have to admit, there are some congressional districts that would have a hard time finding a representative if we banned idiots.)
As for the lies and false equivalents, we’ve been hearing this sort of thing for years from the anti-gay right — why should the gun nuts be any different?
Sen Johnny Isakson said a gun ban was a knee jerk reaction. I pointed out that buying assault weapons after the shooting was an equally stupid knee jerk reaction.
If the objective is to reduce gun deaths and injuries significantly, it is madness to focus on assault weapons because they account for a very small fraction of the problem. Banning 20-round magazines and military-looking weapons but allowing 10-round magazines is just not going to have much effect. The fact that mass killers prefer the big magazines does not mean that they would not consider mass killings if they only had a bag full of glocks (how long does it take to drop one and pick up another?)
Poor Louie. He is definitely unwell. Over at Juanita Jean’s they trash him almost every day. Well, that is, every time he speaks which is often and with great energy.

AURORA, Colo. — Four people are dead after a gunman held police at bay for several hours while barricaded in a townhome in the same Colorado city where a shooter in a crowded theater fatally wounded 12 people six months ago.
Aurora SWAT team members fired at the gunman after he went to a second floor window and began firing at them. Officers found the gunman dead inside, but it was not clear whether he was fatally wounded by police or killed himself, a police spokeswoman said.
Dennis Miller is still around? And has a show?
In my post yesterday, Guns don’t sell guns, people do.
I pointed out the way that the NRA works definitions in order to muddle the issue. And they have trained their extremist members in how to argue. They like to go on the attack, use bumper sticker slogans and ridiculous analogies. And since they have created their own platforms to speak they aren’t challenged. And in the case of the MSM, they are also not challenging them.
Where would be interesting if someone could get Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX). in a conversation with the survivors and or parents of victims of Sandy Hook (or of shootings in his state.)
Dr Rep Louis, please tell this mother of a dead child how that weapon that killed her was ‘Just a tool’ like a hammer.
I thought I would just say this.
Every shooting is an opportunity for change for a safer future, if we act.

Last month, the talking point was baseball bats kill more in the US than firearms. When it was easily shown that firearms account for 2/3 of murders in the US, they moved on to the next talking point. Now, I see, it’s hammers in Rwanda. I’m sure this will be showing up in my gun nut friends’ feeds on facebook shortly. Going from lame to lamer, keep it up guys. You aren’t helping your cause any!
Maybe we should skip the guns and just ban idiots.
I’m thinking let’s skip the idiots and just not ban guns?
I’ve been following this site for years and the #1 reason that I become increasingly Libertarian is due to the relentless onslaught of hypocrisy, idiocy, simple minded and lazy faux intellectualism, refusal to question, failure to think critically, raw-raw, boom-boom..cheerleading the demise of everything we claim to stand for, moronism and cowardice of this sad collection of otherwise mostly well intentioned individuals.
My guess is that you have become so comfortable within your ideological niche that at this point you just consider the overwhelming and blatant dysfunction to be all a part of the ‘great game’?
NOT.
Step outside, you self proclaimed lovers of science and reason…………..{chuckle,chuckle…snort, snort}.

If you seriously buy into the crap spewed forth on this blog then you are little more than a useful idiot and an absolute coward.
The lesser of two evils remains evil……….
I just ask myself, “Would I rather be shot with a gun or hit with a hammer?” It’s a no-brainer.
But, some restrictions on buying (and serious registration) would make it extremely difficult to amass a “bagful” of Glocks.
> cheerleading the demise of everything we claim to stand for
You have a thinking problem. No one here claims to stand for mass murder via firearms. Peace, love, understanding, justice, economic fairness, equal rights, a clean sustainable environment — none of these require assault weapons.
Yeah, you’re right. I have a thinking problem.
Be glad that you obviously do not.
