Revisionist history coming from the Romney camp was to be expected, but how would you feel if you were, say, Sheldon Adelson, after pouring millions to elect this man — or if you were an average Joe donating hard-earned money that you felt was well-spent — after hearing this load of offensive crap? A Boston Globe campaign post-mortem article portrays a Mittens without any fire in the belly to run for President.
More than being reticent, Romney was at first far from sold on a second presidential run. Haunted by his 2008 loss, he initially told his family he would not do it. While candidates often try to portray themselves as reluctant, Tagg insisted his father’s stance was genuine.
“He wanted to be president less than anyone I’ve met in my life. He had no desire to . . . run,” said Tagg, who worked with his mother, Ann, to persuade his father to seek the presidency. “If he could have found someone else to take his place . . . he would have been ecstatic to step aside. He is a very private person who loves his family deeply and wants to be with them, but he has deep faith in God and he loves his country, but he doesn’t love the attention.”
And this is the man the GOP establishment put in the driver’s seat as the alternative to Barack Obama. Well, it’s not surprise Ann Romney was pushing her husband. She was practically measuring drapes for the White House until the bottom fell out of her fantasy.
What does that attitude by Mitt Romney mean to people who worked day and night to elect him if he was only half in the game? What a sorry state of affairs for the GOP. I can’t wait for the 2016 Clown Car.
Here’s a flashback to show you just how much Adelson poured into a campaign for a man who “had no desire” to run:
Earlier in the year, Adelson indicated at different times that he planned to spend about $100 million or “as much as it takes” to defeat Obama and help Republicans in Congressional races. Adelson’s personal wealth has been pegged at $20.5 billion by Forbes, making him one of the world’s richest men and enabling him to open his checkbook wide without worrying much about his bottom line.
Adelson’s largess appeared to have an impact on Romney’s campaign strategy. After Adelson publicly suggested that Romney sometimes waffled in his stances and wasn’t as ideologically consistent as his original pick, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, he and Romney met in late May in Las Vegas. Shortly afterwards, the casino owner’s first $10 million donation to Romney’s allied super PAC arrived.
Not long after their meeting, Romney restated his support for one of Adelson’s top priorities — his fervent backing of Israel’s conservative government and his opposition to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Romney’s first foreign trip after his meeting with Adelson included a late July visit to Israel, which included a Jerusalem fundraiser that Adelson famously attended.

One question I have is — when the inevitable Foreign Corrupt Practices Act indictments of Adelson come down, due to his bribery in Macao and other places he does business, how much goodwill has he bought from GOP politicians such that they will howl about politically motivated prosecutions? Because, if Sheldon was buying himself a pet President and DoJ with his donations, surely the one he didn’t buy — that got elected — will have it in for him?
Right?
“…he doesn’t love the attention.”
I believe Tagg on this one. Romney really loathes it when people pay attention to his ethics or his finances, or ask questions about what his actual policies would be.
Which casinos does Adelstein own in Vegas and elsewhere? I want to be certain to avoid them, if possible.
Sounds like sour grapes to me. See, after the fox had tried and tried to jump and get the grapes that were hanging just out of reach, he finally gave up. Then he said, after being unable to snatch them, that they were probably sour anyway.
I know a wealthy dickhead (net worth 75 mil) – private jets for 30 years, many homes, island home at Four Seasons on Nevis, etc.
This dickhead(R-fox news viewer) would love to run for office AND WIN.
He doesn’t run because he is afraid of losing.
Perhaps Romney has inspired him (ja, ja, ja).
Vegas Sands Corp. but it looks like he tore down the original Sands and it is now The Venetian
He is the chairman and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, the parent company of Venetian Macao Limited which operates The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino and the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

tagg is just a chip off the old block – dad doesn’t know
when to keep his mouth shut either. They never learn.
IMHO, Lazer Tagg’s statement was prepared and authorized by the major asshole himself. Tagg is simply the messenger.
If foreign money is not allowed into American political campaigns, what was Romney doing at a campaign fund raiser in Israel? Huh?
I don’t know if it is true. But I don’t know if it isn’t true. I’m trying to figure out if I should give a shit. should I?
Book Salon up with Anthony Arnove’s Howard Zinn Speaks: Collected Speeches 1963-2009 hosted by Mark Karlin
Why, then, did this guy run–not once, but twice–for an office he didn’t want?
Romney wanted it bad and he knows it. He’s just trying to pretend at modesty now in an effort to appear less arrogant and ambitious.
“. . .Mitt Romney ‘had no desire’ to be President. . .”
Well, of course he didn’t! He didn’t want to do that whistlestop as MA Gov, either.
It was clear to me that neither Al Gore or John Kerry really wanted to be president either. Certainly they didn’t put up a fight to keep from losing after the election.
Sure, sure, he had no desire to be President, and the sky isn’t blue, and I have a bridge in Brooklyn that can be had cheap.
I expect to have to be skeptical about things Presidential candidates say during the campaign, but I don’t have the time or energy for it afterwards. Just getting on with their lives as filthy rich should be enough revenge on us peons.
Brer Rabbit and Briar Patch defense.
1) this is accurate and is just petulant sour grapes / sore loser: ‘I didn’t want your stupid presidency anyway’; or 2) this is accurate, and Mitt wanted to be president a little, because he was bored with what he was doing and felt as if he deserved it; if true, GOP donors and all the other GOP candidates should immediately go over to Mitt’s house and kick his ass for wasting everyone’s time and money; or 3) the kid thinks he is covering for the old man and made this crap up.
So basically he did us a favor by running. What a disgusting family.
Mittens looked shell shocked election night. I felt that he really believed his Kolob god had selected him. Mittens was having difficulty reconciling his faith with reality.
Ann Romney didn’t want Mittens to run and you could see it on every inch of her body. It was painful watching her on The View (Mittens could not accompany her because the more people were exposed to him the less they liked him).
It should all work out in the end as mormons believe that if you loose a body part (an eye or a leg) while on Earth you get that back in heaven. So, since mitt lost the election on Earth, the Kolob god can make him president when he gets to heaven.
Mitt may have had no desire to be President, but he thought he was entitled to be Prez.
Tagg sure picked up on the old man’s penchant for telling whoppers. Yeah, Mitt didn’t want to run, but millions of Republicans begged him.
according to “tagg” romney
He(da da) wanted to be president less than anyone I’ve met in my life. He had no desire to . . . run,”
that must be some cosmicly STAGGERING bad luck for willard. I dont want to get picked for jury duty and its happened to me twice…imagine not wanting to be president and actually running for president twice…wow. thats some real bad luck. poor mit.
sour grapes for sure.
along the lines of “I’m not fired, I quit!” kind of crap.
geez, I expect this from a 14 year old running for class president…the immaturity of the entire clan is staggering.
It’s both dangerous and weird to think that power and responsibilities you don’t want are worth fighting for because none of the others is as good as you. Messianic, even.
At a tactical level, though, the direct quotes from Tagg (and other family contributions to the campaign) suggest that Romney was unfit to weather the challenges of the White House.
The big question in my mind is, how do the tools built and lessons learned by the Obama campaign get folded back into advancing justice, fairness, and competent government?
The Venetian. He built it for $4 billion as a gift to his wife. Just enjoy the Sports Book and the free drinks like I do when I am in Vegas.
the world has averted another prance upon the stage ala gwb
Just put mitt on top of a car with a tree, by by mitt !!!!!!
I heard Obama wasn’t gonna put Adelson in the dock bc it might look like he was “settling scores” with political adversaries
This is sour grapes of a sore loser. Mormon Mitt and his Religious mafia sincerely believed that Mitt (not senile Orrin Hatch) was the man on the white horse foretold to save the Constitution hanging by a thread
These Mormons (I live in Salt Lake City) sincerely believed with all the prayer and fasting Romney would prevail over the guy born with the Mark of Cain. His handlers were still telling Romney he would win as late as Tuesday afternoon when those people with jobs would get off work to vote for Romney
Kerry laid down for his frat buddy by not demanding a recount investigation into Ohio’s vote.
My personal thoughts is that Mitt had to delay his concession speech because Ann was too hysterical and whacked out to be presented to the masses
Probably not. But like so many such affairs of no value, the human dynamics can be interesting. And could have value if falling into patterns in psychology. But I sense that Romney is uniquely really screwed up.
I suppose many find human complexity to be attractive. But what about complex dysfunction? That seems pretty sad, even if interesting.
Oh My!!!! (kudos to Mr. Takei)
Poor stressed out and over(never)worked Ann thought she needed to be a queen?
And Mittens had such a long glorious history of running companies into the ground, killing workers pensions, all while taking government handouts to keep the companies to stay where they were while the corporate kings got paid handsomely for killing the economy and the company they were supposedly charged with saving.
Note to Sheldon Adelson – your contributions to these failed candidates were a waste of your money. Ever think about donating to those less fortunate than you? Not surprised you didn’t.
And…Tagg, you should roll up your sleeves and work a real day for real pay. Learn what the majority of Americans live through. Most of us are not handed a silver spoon by our nannies.
I’m with several others here: A clear case of sour grapes.
“Oh, he never really wanted the job anyway.”
Mitt Romney had ample opportunities to choose not to run or to drop out at any time during the primaries when it became clear he was never going to be anybody’s first choice in the GOP.
If Mittens really didn’t want the job, then why did he spend the last six years campaigning for it? What a load of BS.
Oh absolutely – to them it was a given that they’d all be in the oval office come January.
Does anyone know if pathological dishonesty is hereditary?
If not, the nurturing begins immediately after conception.
So, that worked out well for everyone then — he didn’t want to be president, we didn’t want him to be president: win-win.
All he would have had to do was collect a pay check, just like the last sock puppet Republican president. What’s not to love?
10 other candidates were competing for the Republican presidential nomination, so the notion that Mitt “couldn’t find anyone else” is a stupendiferous lie.
