The ink is hardly dry on the bill (just signed Saturday by Governor Jerry Brown) and here comes Mat Staver, ready to damage LGBTQ youth at any cost. (MetroWeekly):
In a statement released today, Liberty Counsel Chairman Mat Staver announced that the group of social conservatives, which seeks to advance “religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and the family,” would challenge the California law on the grounds that it imposes a “catch-22″ for licensed therapists.
“The California governor and legislature are putting their own preconceived notions and political ideology ahead of children and their rights to get access to counseling that meets their needs,” Staver said in a statement. “A number of minors who have struggled with same-sex attraction have been able to reduce or eliminate the stress and conflicts in their lives by receiving counseling of their choice which best meets their needs and religious convictions.”
According to Staver, who is also dean of the Liberty University School of Law, the bill and the ethical codes of the state’s licensing boards in California are on an “inevitable collision course.” He added that the bill would “harm children, stress families, and place counselors in a catch-22, because they will be forced to violate their licensing ethical codes.”
What is unbelievable is that there really is no excuse for supporting science-free brainwashing that has been perpetrated on children younger than 18 by “therapists” trying to change their sexual orientation, many seeking to “pray away the gay” and other psychologically damaging tactics. The Golden State law is the first of its kind in the nation and is is not surprising that the professional anti-gays are right out of the box challenging the law.

I’m not sure there’s a heaven or if there is, it’s booooooriing. but, I bet their Hell is a place that perks you RIGHT up.I am equally sure there is a special circle of it reserved for men like these, probably any women would be segregated so they could act our their fantasies endlessly among the cinders.
Even reading about these “people” who make $$$$ off the suffering of kids makes me want to go take a bath and scrape the slime off
I can’t wait for him to explain how a law that prohibits a harmful practice is going to violate ethics rules. “First do no harm”, anyone?
So, medical treatment is in some way related to religion again?
Welcome to the 12th century, Mr. Staver. The rest of us live in the 21st century. We trust real doctors and the advances that were made in medicine during the last century and a half.
These clowns are so used to dealing religious horseshit they don’t want to quit. I think we ought to regulate all the jesus-god garbage on tv, all the ceiling pointers condoned by the right wing television stations which promote the ignorance of believing in non-existent supernatural beings. I understand it’s pandering to the ignorant, but when my only choice to eliminate it from my home is to eliminate all sports contests it upsets me. Bouycott these asshole, they’re no different than this clown.
These Kapitalist Kwistian Klowns make their money this way. “Science-free brainwashing” is part of their culture. Your would-be regulators find their pandering to ignorance flattering, quaint, and useful.
I hope these folks realize that if they win, I get my voodoo license back.
“We don’t hate gays, we just want to help them.” That’s the stock assertion regurgitated in the mega churches. You know where they can stuff their “help”.
The specter of ex-gay life usually hangs vaguely around the periphery of anti-gay political advocacy. For once, it’s front and center.
“A number of minors who have struggled with same-sex attraction have been able to reduce or eliminate the stress and conflicts in their lives by receiving counseling of their choice which best meets their needs and religious convictions.”
OK, Mr. Staver, bring a few well-rounded adults forward to talk about how receiving NARTH-based therapy as kids reduced stress and met their needs. Start a petition drive for past clients of your best and most active therapists — can you get a thousand people to stand in support of the care they got? A hundred? A dozen?
