Really, John Kasich? The Ohio governor, whose cred as a womb controller in the war in women doesn’t need additional burnishing, served up this gem at a Romney rally.
“You know, Jane Portman, Karen Kasich, and Janna Ryan, they operate an awful lot of the time in the shadows,” he said in Owensville, referring to the wife of Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, his own wife, and the wife of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, respectively.
“It’s not easy to be a spouse of an elected official,” Kasich continued. “You know, they’re at home, doing the laundry and doing so many things while we’re up here on the stage getting applause, right? They don’t often share in it. And it is hard for the spouse to hear the criticism and to put up with the travel schedule and to have to be at home taking care of the kids. And where is the politician? Out on the road.”

How did he miss “barefoot and pregnant” I wonder?
I bet Queen Ann ain’t home doing no laundry
There’s plenty of reasons to criticize candidates that you don’t have to make something up. Your headline notwithstanding this was a non-gender specific comment praising all political spouses who otherwise do a lot of work while not getting any of the glory. It’s a totally non-partisan, totally non-gender specific and totally true. It’s too bad that even on FDL that raising children is treated as so worthless that it should be ridiculed.
Bless me, Father, for I have sinned……….
I just find this kind of gotcha blogorism, which several bloggorists practice here, increasingly. . . unproductive. It’s the liberal version of Entertainment Tonight. OF COURSE these people are creepy creeps; since when don’t we take that for granted?
You are right! Good catch!
He never actually said “wives”! Obviously he was also picturing the husbands of campaigning politicians when he said that. He was no doubt thinking of “The First Dude” doing the laundry and raising the kids when Sarah was running for office.
You’re sharp today, spanishinquisition!
The spouses from all political stripes do anonymous work while their significant others get all the applause. That a politician points out the obvious should not be a controversy. The statement was about all spouses irrespective of whether they’re Democrats or Republicans or men or women. Certainly they is better ways of using FDL frontpage space on real issues that actually exist instead of trying to gin up something that didn’t exist.
i will put up 100 bucks, that his wife doesnt do the laundry,in the GOVERNORS mansion
Well, Obama’s wife got to meet the Queen of England…while wearing a blouse that costs $6500 bucks.
And, while I’m at it, I doubt that Ann Romney is suffering from terminal dishpan hands.
Oh yea I can just see this guys wifey poo doing his laundry LOL. They probably have two chamber maids doing his and hers separately is my guess.
Does magic underwear need laundering?
Thanks for this posting. Like you say, nothing new. But most of us understand what it signifies. A few will never get it.
Just imagine the pity Kasich lays out for wives of long-distance truckers.
If he were my husband, he’d be sleeping on the couch for a while.
