The anti-gay fringe-evangelical actor touted by NOM’s Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance in video whining about how the media has dared to ask him about his pathetic homophobia.

I guess the National Organization for Marriage can’t find enough high-profile celebrities to represent its views, you know, like Maggie Gallagher’s statement that “winning the fight to ban marriage for gay couples with the fall of communism and believes that if it is made legal, it will mean “losing American civilization.”

After all, it set some very specific standards for public figures to be its spokesbots.

[S]trategy documents uncovered yesterday, from the nation’s most prominent anti-gay marriage group, the National Organization for Marriage (found by the Human Rights Campaign), reveal a novel approach to convincing Americans to vote against marriage equality: recruit glamorous but unintelligent celebrities. (p.19/20)

“Hollywood with its cultural biases is far bigger than we can hope to be. We recognize this. But we also recognize the opportunity – the disproportionate potential impact of proactively seeking to gather and connect a community of artists, athletes, writers, beauty queens and other glamorous non-cognitive elites across national boundaries. (This is applying the Witherspoon and IAV model to non-intellectual elites.)”

(emphasis added)

And so…drum roll please. We give you “non-cognitive elite” Kirk Cameron, Champion of Marriage:

“Hey, remember a few months ago, when the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) got caught in court documents blatantly trying to create resentment between the LGBT community and other minority groups? Remember how nestled in those court documents, among all their underhanded race-baiting tactics, was the revelation that they were also seeking out “non-cognitive elites” to be celebrity spokespeople for their anti-LGBT cause?

So sorry to be the bearer of bad news to all you other non-cognitive types who had applied for the “celebrity anti-gay spokesperson” job, but it looks like the position is being filled by former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron. (Better luck next time, I guess.)”

GLAAD:

“Kirk Cameron and the anti-gay activists at NOM are making a claim that Americans know to be false,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. “This rhetoric won’t work anymore. Communities across this country love and cherish their LGBT neighbors, friends and family members. This includes people in families headed by LGBT people. Their implication that LGBT couples can’t create loving and stable homes is not only outdated and irrelevant; it’s designed specifically to hurt those families.”
