In this closed captioned video, Janet Mock (an editor at People Magazine) and Isis King (actress and model) discuss trans issues from a trans people of color perspective for In The Life. In the video they also talk about why transgender is a term that both of them use regarding community.
To quote Jos of Feministing on the video in her piece Video: Janet Mock and Isis King on media representations of trans women:
So good right? I especially love the way diversity of opinion on language is represented as both personal and political. Janet and Isis rock.
And I’d agree — they do rock!

Great interview, but when they talked about the Don Lemon interview I couldn’t help thinking about one of the questions I’d have asked if I’d been the moderator:
Harmony Santana was on that panel and she lives in Green Chimneys, a shelter for homeless LGBT youth. I’d have asked her why, what led to her living in Green Chimneys. That (I’d hope) would have led to at least a few questions about discrimination trans people face in their daily lives, a topic that was completely absent from Don Lemon’s agenda.
That’s really the biggest problem: These mainstream media people just don’t get us and they never have. As someone who does a weekly Internet radio show, I hope some of these folks will do some appearances on real community media, where we’ll ask them questions that actually matter, questions about WHO they are, not WHAT they are. It’s always been amazing to me how difficult it is to get these folks on my own show, yet they’re willing to go on mainstream media and talk to ill-informed interviewers like Don Lemon who treat them like human interest curiosities instead of people. Here’s hoping that’ll change with time.
