Damn, it’s been hot around the country. I had to work over the weekend and both on Saturday and Sunday here in central NC, and the temp hovered 100 degrees. And we lost power during an overnight wind storm on Friday (it was back on Sat morning); it messed up A/C so it was 89 degrees in some parts of our office. When I went outside in the late afternoon, the temperature in my car was 121. Nice and balmy, huh?
I can say that I’m thankful that we’ve not had the problems with power outages, rolling blackouts or brown-outs in this area that I see people are experiencing in the Northeast. Electrical wires are underground in my part of town, so the storms that have taken out trees haven’t affected this area as much. But much of the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods have above-ground electric wiring, and thus are vulnerable to outages from these summer storms.
And the conservatives say there’s no global warming. Look at this video from Eau Claire, Wisconsin. From the 29 overpass motorists stopped to look at a massive ramp like crack/road buckling that authorities had not yet cordoned off. They noted most cars slowed down for this horror, but it was hard to avoid damage if your car goes airborne like the General Lee on Dukes of Hazzard. Good thing this car wasn’t a Mini or Smartcar.
What are you experiencing in your part of the country? I do recall that when I lived in NYC the summers, while not as blazing as here in the South, were miserable because most people didn’t have A/C (and there were no “cooling centers” back then). A ceiling fan in your house isn’t doing anything once all of the air is roasting hot. I can only imagine the strain in big cities as people buy those portable A/Cs and plug them in.

Weather here in Northern IL is/has been hot and humid – temps this week near 100. Last week too. We had some rain on Friday and some more on Sunday, but we are in a drought and all it takes is a look at lawns or cornfields to see it.
The derecho that clobbered the DC area actually formed in this area, but when it hit Friday morning, it hadn’t yet intensified enough to be more than a thundershower with a little wind, yet when it hit the Chicago suburbs, about 30 miles east from here, it was already a severe thunderstorm. Same deal with the rain on Sunday.
It’s 98° at 2 PM CDT today. Has been in the 102° to 105° range last week. The electric bill is over $200 this month and I’m having to water the herb garden everyday.
re: Phil2 — Chicago isn’t getting off easy, in spite of being next to Lake Michigan — our forecast for the rest of the week is highs of 101-102. We’re at the point where temps in the 80s are a cold wave.
And no rain, except for bits and dribbles.
I know, I’m in Dekalb!
I am fortunately on an equal payment plan with the electric company, so it doesn’t vary from month to month. Otherwise it would be sticker shock in the summer!
Here in the PacNW we’ve been having a bit of an opposite problem – for now, anyway. Our early Spring just won’t give way. Sure, we’ve had a couple days here and there of 70+ temps, but as I type this (5:30pm PDT), it’s 63 and raining.
This bodes ill for us, later in the summer. We’re overdue for the kind of weather the rest of the country is experiencing right now, and we’re not able to handle it very well. I live in a senior/disabled highrise that has no air conditioning, and when the temps get above 80 (even if just for a few hours), it’s hard on many people. Please belive me when I say the rest of the country has my sympathy, for if we have that kind of weather here later on, there will be heatstroke deaths.
Dateline Houston:
Situation normal; hot but not excessively so. 7 day forecast has highs 93-94.
I wish we could help and take a little heat from you guys. I live near Seattle. This summer’s forecast was for heatwaves starting in late June. A high of 61 isn’t a heatwave in any season.
I’d give you some of ours but Colorado is more in need of dumping their excess heat.
Going to be 101 in Decatur IL today…puts a little damper on the holiday, speaking of that, Happy 4th to you all!
