Class. Intelligence. Members of today’s Republican Party, particularly the birther set, are obsessed with pushing the envelope in its utter hatred for the first black President, always ready to place his head in a noose or feature imagery like this, always with no one in particular claiming ownership for the creative project. From the Missoulian:
There was less laughter – although plenty of picture-taking – of an outhouse labeled “Obama Presidential Library” parked outside Missoula’s Hilton Garden Inn, where the convention took place.
Nothing on the outhouse indicated who was responsible for it, although it made an appearance in the Memorial Day parade in Corvallis in Ravalli County.
The outhouse was painted to look as though it had been riddled by bullets.
Inside, a fake birth certificate for Barack Hussein Obama made reference to the disproven controversy over the president’s origins. It was stamped “Bull––.” A graffito advised “For a Good Time call 800-Michelle (crossed out), Hillary (crossed out) and Pelosi (circled in red.)”
A reader at TPM sent in a picture of the outhouse from the Memorial Day event:

Even most of the people there look “meh” if not embarrassed. The older people especially look like, “this is juvenile unamusing bullshit, even for me.”
Remember when questioning the President during war was unpatriotic?
Don’t we still have a President (who’s Electoral College margin of victory exceeded the total of both of W’s margins) and aren’t we still at war?
And aren’t folks that are dissing the President (I’m looking at you, Joe Wilson & Neil Monro)the same sort that were labelling dissent as treason, circa 2000-2008?
I’m sure the corporate PR division – AKA the MSM – will get right on it.
Look, I’m second to no one in my criticism of Obama, but I respect the office, even when Bush held it.
Eh? You are forgetting the First Commandment (as handed down by Moses from Mt. Sinai, no less): IOKIYAR!
I’ve seen photos of this stupid outhouse (or similar ones… who knows? Perhaps the Kochs paid for a fleet of them to be manufactured) almost since the day Obama was elected. They’ve been the “darling” of Right Wing email forwards, and I know that this outhouse or similar have been carted around to different Tea Party “rallies.” The Tea Party has been seriously ginned up by racist stunts like this, which will get worse, not better, as our fabled election season continues.
oh gosh, anybody with an intelligence level higher than mid-double digits knows that’s a REDNECK library. Probably with a stack ‘o reader’s digests on the floor.
What kind of a coward can’t take credit for their public political statement? Aren’t these brave patriotic folks supposed to be packing? Who are they hiding from? And they PAINTED on the bullet holes?! Ye fucking gods, how lame. What poser wouldn’t use real bullets?
More to the point, who in their right mind would take these cowardly phonies seriously?
“Donny: Are they gonna hurt us, Walter?
Walter Sobchak: No, Donny. These men are cowards.”
One might think there would be a logic to the criticism, or, as you suggest, an overriding respect for the office. However, it seems that for these folks they have a certain “logic” of their own, which goes like this: All US Presidents have been white; Obama is not White; Therefore, Obama is not a US President and his installation in the White House is illegitimate. By this reasoning, then, it becomes perfectly acceptable and in no way hypocritical to criticise Obama on issues that were verboten for Bush. All that is required to see things this way is the right kind of fundie ideology.
This reminds me of the LA Weekly, a progressive weekly paper, back in 1970 with a cartoon of Nixon taking a dump, with his pants down, and Agnew coming out his rear end.
As I recall, lots of progressives thought that was very funny. Not one objected.
So, objections like above should be ignored.
Well, the bullet holes and the personal stuff about Michelle, Hillary, and Pelosi, are over the line, but the outhouse-as-presidential-library, itself, was brilliant. And if, as I suspect, “Obama sucks less!” as a campaign slogan, works about as well as “We suck less!” worked in the mid-terms, then considering the mountain of clout that Obama came in with, only to willfully squander it, then, that little building might just HOLD the preznintial library.

Speaking as a lifelong progressive, and a real one, not someone who thinks that as long as the republicans are worse, any hosing of us that Obama does should be slid, you’re right. I despised Bush and what he did to us (so much of which, Barack Obama has sustained…) but some of the things that people put about, about both he and his family, made me wince and wish for people to understand that they were giving he and the GOP sympathy votes.
This is doing some of the same, with bloggers like Pam scurrying around for the most outrageous thing they can find that the out-and-out peckerheads are saying about Obama, while totally ignoring the reality of what Obama has done to a progressive agenda.
I agree with your assessment of Obama but to think that the continual fanning of the racist flames is merely an annoyance is denying the reality of the potential violence.
The truck and trailer both have plates. I would think someone could be held accountable.
I think racism is a dying dog, and I’m all for finishing the job, but it can’t be that much of a threat, when americans, 3 and a half years ago, elected a black president in what amounts to a landslide.
Put it like this, Barack Obama in the White House has done far more damage to a progressive agenda than have all of the kluxers and flat-earthers and even “moderate” republicans, put together.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to point out that the republicans have already been having a “good time” with Pelosi,….most notably for me, when she stuffed that effort by some progressive democrats in the House to bring up a bill that would have stripped the robber barons in the health insurance industry of their exemption from anti-trust laws. After she did that, I don’t much care WHAT they say about her, except, that Pam uses it as more herring-dragging for Obama.
I’d guess there’d be stacks of gun catalogs in that redneck outhouse.
I never saw that political cartoon you mention, so I can’t comment on whether “progressives” laughed about it or not. That said, I think that there’s a big difference between a political cartoon of the type you describe and carting a fake outhouse around to various rightwing rallies, etc, ongoingly for several years.
The other point is that conservatives were resoundingly directed to call anyone who even questioned Bush – as he lied us into a fake War on Iraq – as traitors and treasonous because we weren’t supposed to *question* a sitting POTUS while the nation was at War. We were told that we were “giving aid and comfort to the enemy.”
Now that we have an AA POTUS, who calls himself a “Democrat,” conservatives aren’t bothered with petty trifles like whether it’s appropriate to diss a War-Time POTUS or not. It’s one Rule for them, and a completely different rule for whom they perceive to be “the other.”
A big piece of this, for me, is pointing out the ongoing hypocrisy of the rightwing in terms who is “allowed” to protest the government/POTUS, when and for what reasons. That’s how I see it. Pam may have posted this for different reasons; I do not speak on her behalf.
BINGO!
tanbark… once again you have it figured out.
Do they have hillbillies in his native land of Kenya? (sorry, I was going for what some of the people at the rally might be thinking)
“I never saw that political cartoon you mention, so I can’t comment on whether “progressives” laughed about it or not.”
Any credibility that you may have had left… was surely lost with that comment.
“no one in particular claiming ownership for the creative project”
The trailer has a license plate. Finding the owner is a simple process.
I have said this elsewhere, but this is actually rather mild for our Montana Republican Party. The state, along with northern Idaho, has become a magnet for every known variety of far right whackaloon. We have survivalists, militias, sovereign citizens, libertarians and Constitution Partiers, radical Xtianists, white supremacists, and folks so totally batshit that they defy categorization. The mother of the Prussian Blue twins has been recruiting white supremacists to create a “white homeland” in NW Montana.
I guess some are torn between defending the first black president against prejudice and wishing he would just go away. I don’t care anymore, this is one politician that deserves whatever he gets.
“back in 1970″
The fact that you have to go back more than 40 years to dredge up something that fulfills your desire to create some kind of equivalency is actually quite telling.
And what it tells is that the many of the right-wingers of today are over the top in their racism and hatred. And there is nothing on the left of today that comes close to comparing to that.
Here’s a few dozen more recent examples, with links to a few hundred more.

What does it tell you about many of the left-wingers of yesterday? Were they over the top in their hatred? And was there nothing on the left of yesterday that comes close to comparing to an outhouse?
Oh, there were plenty of others, but that one stuck out in my memory, and a bit similar to the outhouse.
Aside from that, you must have a short memory. Lots of Bush pictures with Hitler mustasches.
And, just last week, The Game of Thrones deal with Bush’s severed head on a pike, and the show’s producers making fun of that fact.
Now, you tell me what would have occurred if Obama’s severed head had been on a pike.
So, to me, just ignore these calls. The pleas are not even worth considering.
If you want to imply equivalency, then you have *establish* equivalency
Were any of the things you cite proudly shown at a political event of a national political party? Not once, but twice?
If they weren’t, then there is no equivalency.
But keep going back farther. Maybe something like that happened during the war of 1812, who knows.
See my response to cregan above.
If you want to imply equivalency you have *establish* equivalency
Not trying to imply “equivalency”, way worse.
I know one thing… if *I* was there and saw this obscenity, it wouldn’t have lasted three minutes unattended! A few gallons of gasoline and it would’ve made a nice flaming torch, not unlike the flaming crosses no doubt many of those inbreds dance around late at night…
Yet again they think that taking something that was about Bush and making it into something about Obama is creative and clever. Not an original idea in the bunch.
Grrr, how do you insert a picture if basic html tags do not work?
If you’re so precisely pleased with the birthers’ tasteful Obama tribute, then I suppose we can (if nothing else) be assured you won’t be joining their gathering–paintbrush in hand–to add your mot juste?
Having also–despite perfunctory references to “kluxers”–joined in declarations of The End of Racism, now that a not-purebred-White heterosexual man got elected President? I’ve begun wondering what are the “progressive” ideals you insistently claim (ad nauseum) to
uphold. After so many iterations of furious fuck-Obama posts, inevitably you’ve begun enacting the stereotypy of a Tea-Party drone.
Lest anyone be confused by the more-familiar use of a similar term, I meant “stereotypy” in the sense defined by Mosby as:
the persistent, inappropriate mechanical repetition of actions, body postures, or speech patterns, usually occurring with a lack of variation in thought processes or ideas.
