Ah, the fearful fundamentalists are so unhinged by social change related to the legal recognition of same sex couples that we can find plentiful examples of them showing their @ss in public. Witness Thursday’s Colorado state Senate floor debate on SB-2 a civil unions bill — the “Christian” perspective in opposition of a civil union bill by two Senators, Scott Renfroe and Kevin Lundberg.
Actual quotes in the video:
- “I truly believe Jesus is a better answer than Senate Bill 2″
- “What is the attitude towards those who choose homosexuality over heterosexuality?”
While we have our own versions of this flaming crap going on in NC, at this point no public officials are willing to come out and spew bible-beating nonsense like this about Amendment One. They are running for cover, with even a former sponsor of it now saying he’ll vote against it. And we have bipartisan condemnation of A1 – look at the statements of former Charlotte Mayors Harvey Gantt & Richard Vinroot:
Hat tip, Daniel Gonzales.

What, a black man willing to speak for GLBTs? I thought those didn’t exist — NOM keeps telling us they don’t. Gee, next you’ll be telling me Bayard Rustin was gay.

SB-2 passed the Colorado Senate so all of our legislators aren’t so bad. For a relatively conservative state, I think Colrado is doing pretty good this year. Yes, we have some nuts (cough doug bruce cough), but we’re getting there.
Somebody should beat those CO Senators with a paddle that says “Separation of Church and State”.
Unfortunately Pam, you missed the forest for the trees.
We’ve had several votes on civil unions over the years in CO, you never had to listen to the fundies before because they had the votes to squash the legislation. You heard from the pro-LBGT crowd, making sure their butts were covered with their constituents before the legislation went down in flames. For months, we’ve known in CO that this time the signals were lining up for CUs to actually pass and become law, therefore it is the fundies turn to get out there and make noise for their people before they lose.
I don’t know, which do you prefer? To hear speeches from your side as you lose or hear this fundie speech as our culture moves forward. I know which one I prefer, looking forward to hearing as much fundie speech as I can going forward.
Cheers!
I haven’t really been following SB-2 but I’m pretty sure I received an email from One COlorado yesterday saying it passed. I’m pretty pround of our state, even though it probably won’t get through the house. We’ve come a long way
I’m proud of how the Senate handled the Civil Unions bill. They let the blowhards blow, then passed it. I’m more concerned with “Colorado Memorial 3″. “This deceptively named memorial asks the United States Congress to enact the “Respect for Rights of Conscience Act of 2011” and asks the President of the U.S. to extend a comprehensive religious conscience exemption from the HHS requirement to cover birth control. If passed, it would put the Colorado Legislature on record as opposing health insurance coverage of contraception.” It won’t pass the Senate, but it concerns me.
Any chance of getting a few of the NC or CO legislators for an exchange with OKC. Take Sally Kern (PLEASE!) and plenty of others, just for a session or two.
