Via Addicting Info, unsurprising news that the one unscandal-ridden arm of the Catholic church these days gets slapped by by Pope Benedict. From the New York Times:
The sisters were also reprimanded for making public statements that “disagree with or challenge the bishops, who are the church’s authentic teachers of faith and morals.” During the debate over the health care overhaul in 2010, American bishops came out in opposition to the health plan, but dozens of sisters, many of whom belong to the Leadership Conference, signed a statement supporting it — support that provided crucial cover for the Obama administration in the battle over health care.
“I’m stunned,” said Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of Network, a Catholic social justice lobby founded by sisters. Her group was also cited in the Vatican document, along with the Leadership Conference, for focusing its work too much on poverty and economic injustice, while keeping “silent” on abortion and same-sex marriage.“I would imagine that it was our health care letter that made them mad,” Sister Campbell said. “We haven’t violated any teaching, we have just been raising questions and interpreting politics.”

The pope is a dope.
The CDF is the Vatican goon squad that sucker-punched the nuns. The CDF is the new name given to the Roman Inquisition. This is literally the modern Inquisition being used to silence women.
That was my thought too. I didn’t go to Catholic school, although we were raised Catholic (that has seriously been abandoned, btw), because my mother did and she didn’t want to subject us to being treated the same way by the nuns. I did know some nuns semi-socially though and this generation and my mother’s generation seem to be well educated and smart, my mother also thought that her teachers were given teaching as an assignment without training. I suspect that the priests and those in higher ranks still think of them as being “merely women” though. This sort of thing may work in some countries but the US has always been a very different animal. Give ‘em heck, Sister Simone!
Same situation here Mena. I don’t know about other states, but in IL, you didn’t need a college degree to teach in parochial schools. In fact, you didn’t even need a teaching certificate. The school only needed to be up to state standards, which were/are pretty lax.
I went to Catholic school for the first half of first grade. My father finally came to the realization that the public school was superior to the local Catholic school test score-wise. That fact, coupled with the fact that the public school was across the street from our house, and was tuition free, was the clincher. Oh, and his mother yanked him out of Catholic school at age 11 because of the all the BS.
The major target is the Sisters of the Order of St Benedict. THEY founded Pax Christi, THEY have Sr Joan Chittester and refused to silence her, THEY are accepting, run drop in centers, art projects for the poor, soup kitchen and (horrors–que vapours) even had a widowed Lesbian Oblate(Lay Sister).
All that any order would have to do to ‘get out of Galileo’s cell’ would be to denounce same sex marriage and never speak the term “women priests” ever again.
The school my mother went to was in Connecticut. It was fairly heavily populated by Italian immigrants so a lot of what they were requiring was that the teachers spoke Italian. The schools that we didn’t get sent to were in IL though, St. James in Glen Ellyn and St. Francis in Wheaton. The Benedictines have a high school in Lisle, but by that point we definitely weren’t going to get out of the public school system. A couple friends did go there (St. James/ St. Francis) though and they are actually doing quite well professionally. Quite a few people from those schools ended up going to Ivy League schools, it seemed like more than from our public school, but I think that that’s not the standard out put of Catholic schools. I don’t know why that is, but it seems like even the public schools in Dupage county get funded well enough to be above average so maybe they had to compete. Catholic school is expensive!
And there’s Pope Rat’s problem with these “uppity” women. They should be goosestepping like the proper NS-Frauenschaft they are!
They should *not* question a thing, just take their orders like good little robots.
