Humanity #FAIL. I’m beginning to think there’s no hope for a good portion of the human race. Particularly those in leadership positions paid by the taxpayer and ones too stupid to figure out what to keep “private” on Facebook. (Raw Story):
A Miami-Dade fire captain is under investigation after he asserted that the death of an unarmed Florida teen was the fault of “failed, shitbag, ignorant, pathetic, welfare dependent excuses for parents.”
According to the Grio, Miami-Dade fire captain Brian Beckmann made the following entry on his Facebook page last week on the same day that State Attorney Angela Corey announced she was charging neighborhood watchmen George Zimmerman with the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin:
“Listening to Prosecutor Corey blow herself and her staff for five minutes before pre-passing judgment on George Zimmerman. The state seeks reelection again, truth aside. I and my coworkers could rewrite the book on whether our urban youths are victims of racist profiling or products of their failed, shitbag, ignorant, pathetic, welfare dependent excuses for parents, but like Mrs. Corey, we speak only the truth. They’re just misunderstood little church going angels and the ghetto hoodie look doesn’t have anything to do with why people wonder if they’re about to get jacked by a thug.”
Beckmann later deleted the post and defended himself, writing, “I am a private citizen and have the same right to freely express an opinion on any subject that anyone else does. I choose not to embellish or alter the facts as your employer chose to do.”

Captain Beckmann does, indeed, have the right to freely express his opinion on any subject. That right comes with the responsibility to accept the consequences that come about as a result of that expression. This is something the religious ultra-right-wing seems to “forget” all the time.
Maybe we can get Spike Lee to tweet his address.

As the representative of a governmental unit of Miami-Dade, we may assume that his thoughts represent official opinion extant at his level of responsibilty.
Any further outrages in Miami_Dade by authorities or employees will leave the county hugely liable fiscally as the problems are forseeable based upon the Chief’s statements.
He belongs in the Apartheid-era Union of South Africa, not in a major county in the United States.
So is this one of those situations whereby if I *dare* to point out the fact that this public servant, that is, someone who makes a living from citizens’ tax dollars (admittedly not mine, but still…) is a bigoted racist jerkwad… then will conservatives come scurrying out from under the rocks they love to exist under and begin chiding and deriding me for being the real “actual racist” because I called this dirtbag a racist first???

Further proof that we are a post-racial society. My students are legitimately shocked when I expose them to this kind of thing in my race and ethnicity class. Sometimes I think they must live under rocks, even if this is Montana. Maybe especially since this is Montana, which has become a Meccas for these mouth breathers.
Post racial? What does that phrase mean? Yes, the anger is shocking, but I find myself always truly naive. Such hate and cruelty are always a shock. Wonder what words he would come up with had Trayvon been his son? There is no bright light of goodness in this story…but his parents have been classy and thoughtful. Why would they deserve this kind of cruel rant?
The man is a royal flaming asshole who works for the public sector, viz., all of us, and ought to be held to the same standards as the community at large. I hope that they fire the ignorant fucker and he ends up on Skid Row as a sterno junkie.

yeah. i put up the phone # and address for that scumbag pepper spray guy. did it here. got crreamed for it by people immediately. asked them to take it down. that was a mistake — and BTW, it was his work phone and address which are readily obtainable, but even still I felt it was wrong as soon as i did it.

Spike Lee is a right winger according to you. He tweeted what he thought was George Zimmerman’s parent’s address which was erroneous. And the result of that tweet was people showing up threatening the inhabitants of the house until they had to move out.

Up here in Montréal, I catch a couple of talk radio stations from Vermont. His rant mirrors what I hear from Limbaugh, Ingraham and Carr. This captain’s rant is the result listening to foxnews and talk radio all the time. When I read him, fear strikes me as his main motivation. And in his mind, we are the racists for calling out his racism. In the end, he’s another psychopath who wants to make sure his foes pay the ultimate price. Welcome to the new kkk.
Hate is such an ugly emotion. I heard Robert Zimmerman’s father speak on Fox News and was struck by the sheer hatred coming from that man. He spewed so much bile towards President Obama you could almost forget about the murder his son committed in Florida. He taught his son to hate. I hope the old man is proud of himself because now he has lost his son.
This racist rant may have bought Mr. Beckmann a substantial load of well-deserved grief. Managers in the public sector have legal obligations regarding EEO and diversity, and it’s going to be very hard for Miami-Dade to conclude persuasively that anyone with such an outlook can discharge that responsibility. It would certainly be problematic for him to supervise African-American staff or to be involved in any hiring process, and tolerating that situation would definitely be a sign of EEO/diversity problems for Miami-Dade as a whole that could well show up in future litigation (as MauraHennessey correctly asserted).
in addition, people in the public sector — and especially in a uniformed service such as Miami-Dade fire rescue — frequently do not have the sharp division between their employment and their private lives that Beckmann asserts (as we see elsewhere in the asserted use of prostitutes by “off-duty” Secret Service personnel in Colombia). Such professional personnel often have an employment standard similar to the military “conduct unbecoming.” If that’s the case here, Beckmann may have fallen foul of this requirement.
I suspect that we haven’t heard the last of this, and neither has he.

You make a good point. The level of incendiary hatred grows apace on HATE radio & Fixed “News.” The outright bigoted racism, sexism, homophobic nastiness that is spewed forth daily is truly disgusting, but also frightening.
Citizens have been truly brainwashed by listening to/watching this hateful stuff for many *decades.* But when someone points out how bigoted and hateful this kind of speech is, the rightwing dittoheads scurry forth to declare that *you* are the “true racist” for pointing out their nasty in-your-face racism. It’s quite astonishing until you’ve been called a racist by these bigoted haters any number of times.
I’ve long said: be as conservative as you please, but turn off the damn racist hate talk radio. WHAT, really, is “conservative” about this shit?? A rhetorical question, of course.

Miami-Dade fire captain Brian Beckmann should be fired. He represents on a public level. His comments were made available at Facebook. They are truthful with what he represents. And what he represents counters who he is supposed to serve: the people of Miami-Dade. It’s a diverse citizenry. And since Mr. Beckmann is hostile toward a certain sector, it is unlikely he can continue to faithfully serve all people of Miami-Dade.
Don’t forget the bounty. Dead or alive.

Now that I think about it, I guess one would have to be returning from Mars, or actually from Mars not to realize that a statement like that from a Caucasian about Black parents whose unarmed son was recently killed was about as racist as racist gets and about as cruel and insensitive as it is possible to be.
