Marilyn Bart, an English teacher at George C. Marshall High School in Fairfax, also asked 14-year-old Jordan Shumate to explain why blacks allegedly like grape soda (!).

It’s 2012 and the racism, sexism and stupidity still rolling out in the news is appalling. In this case, I don’t know how/why this teacher thought asking this was OK in any context,  but here you have it, a person teaching the leaders of tomorrow from a KKK lesson plan. (Raw Story):

Bart…told 14-year-old Jordan Shumate last week that she wasn’t impressed with his reading of Langston Hughes’ “Ballad of the Landlord.”

“She told me, ‘Blacker, Jordan — c’mon, blacker,’” Shumate said. “‘I thought you were black.’”

When he refused his teacher’s request, Shumate said that Bart started to “read the poem like a slave, basically.”

Shumate, who was the only African-American in class, indicated that such stereotyping by Bart wasn’t an isolated incident. He told reporters Bart also asked him to explain the stereotype behind grape soda and African-Americans to the class.

The school system’s Office of Equity and Compliance is now investigating and Bart is now on paid administrative leave.

Oh, and I have no idea what the grape soda and black folks stereotype Bart is talking about. Where do these bigots come up with this crap. When I did drink full-sugar soda, I was an Orange Crush girl.
