Well, naysayers out there who said that the President would not say a peep about the discriminatory Amendment One in NC because it’s an election year (even though he did so in 2008 for Prop 8), you’ll have to eat crow. His campaign obviously “did the math” and decided it was the right thing to do to release a statement opposing it. (News & Observer’s Under the Dome):
“While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the record is clear that the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples,” said Cameron French, his North Carolina campaign spokesman.
“That’s what the North Carolina ballot initiative would do – it would single out and discriminate against committed gay and lesbian couples – and that’s why the President does not support it.”
I’ve blogged about the silence to date by this President (and, sadly, even the First Lady) as there was trip after trip to NC to fill campaign coffers, even with crowing about the success in repealing DADT, only to ignore the obvious discrimination that’s going on the ballot here on May 8.
The low point for me came on Tuesday (and I recounted this story on the Michelangelo Signorile Show yesterday) when I encountered the new (and green) Organizing for America Durham field office rep during a black constituency group meeting that I was addressing to explain the harms of Amendment One.
She sat next to me and I politely introduced myself and said, “oh that’s great, I have a question to ask.” I told her why I was there, and that we have been hoping the DNC and the President/First Lady would step up and actively help defeat Amendment One, since the President already publicly condemned such amendments and specifically did so for Proposition 8 in CA. What does this woman say?
It was a clearly well-rehearsed response: “we all have to be on the same team and have to be on the same page so “our main man” gets back in office.” The implication that asking for a statement was somehow in conflict with working to re-elect the President.
I said, “yes we are, but I’m not asking for anything that the administration has already taken a position on. ”
She replied, “It’s a sensitive situation here.”
Maybe someone up the campaign food chain finally figured out there’s no harm in pointing out that discrimination placed in a state constitution is simply wrong. It’s not like we’re asking for an endorsement of marriage equality. He’s got that problem as well — related to the platform — with many of his fellow Dems calling for marriage equality language to be added to it, but that’s not the same issue for North Carolina.
If people are that uptight about that frank and earnest statement of opposition to Amendment One stated above, the President shouldn’t have expected to win over those votes anyway.
Thank you Mr. President.
Here is the statement from ProtectNCFamilies:
“We applaud the President’s opposition to Amendment One,” said Jeremy Kennedy, campaign manager for Protect All NC Families. “The President’s support is proof that Amendment One, which could take health care away from children, put domestic violence laws in jeopardy, in addition to hurting all unmarried couples in North Carolina, has far-reaching, negative consequences.
And the office of the governor, Bev Perdue, tweeted:
@ncgovoffice: #Amendment1 is wrong: the Constitution is for guaranteeing rights, not taking them away. We must protect all NC families.
You might recall that, prior to her decision not to run for re-election, Gov. Perdue issued a tepid statement in opposition of Amendment One that, quite frankly, was offensive in re-affirming her belief that civil marriage is for heterosexual couples only and almost left the impact of the amendment on lesbian and gay couples out of it.
“My top priority is creating jobs. Too many people are out of work and I’ve heard from several business leaders who’ve told me that the proposed constitutional amendment will harm our state’s business climate and make it harder to grow jobs here. I believe that marriage is between one man and one woman: That’s why I voted for the law in 1996 that defines marriage as between one man and one woman, and that’s why I continue to support that law today. But I’m going to vote against the amendment because I cannot in good conscience look an unemployed man or woman in the eye and tell them that this amendment is more important than finding them a job. In addition, a number of legal experts have argued that this amendment, if passed, could eliminate legal protections for all unmarried couples in our state, regardless of sexual orientation. Right now, my focus, the General Assembly’s focus, and North Carolina’s focus needs to be on creating jobs.”
With the President out of the closet on this matter, I guess she’s found a backbone to say what the amendment is about – discrimination.
Now for those of you who have been holding back on donating to fight this hateful amendment, will you please help? Many thanks in advance!
Read my post, “A personal appeal – are you against NC’s Amendment One? We need your support for the home stretch!”

I have a hard time getting excited about Obama’s new populism when we are in election season. It is especially hard to hear him speak of civil rights when he claims the right to assassinate anyone he wants without due process and tortured Bradley Manning for 8 months without filing charges. I’ll be surprised if he lifts a finger for our community after he has secured a second term. No eating crow for me just yet …
Well he didn’t say “boo” when it made it’s way to Virginia. Although the way the amendment is written it doesn’t just discriminate against the gay folk it also discriminates against the slutty sluts who choose to forgo marraige as an institution and just live together. So I guess there is that.
Once in a blue moon, Barry tosses a very meager bone to the rubes…
The discussion is really sad to me. This man can never recover the trust and respect that were part of his election. He, in fact, may do many good things. But there was too much disappointment and too mqny positions counter to his campaign rhetoric. I hope he is sincere in these efforts…but he had Rick Warren do his Inaugural Prayer….There is so much that has been inconsistent.
All true. Can’t help but think Obama’s new found populism sprung up because it’s an election year. Otherwise, he would remain absolutely silent on this like he has on numerous things. If I remember rightly, when Prop 8 was on the ballot in California, Obama said nothing about it.
And there’s the very anti-gay Rick Warren at the inauguration. And then there’s the vigorous defense of DOMA at the beginning of Obama’s term (he has since stopped defending it). And then there’s the former chief of staff calling liberal activists fucking retards and no apology was forthcoming because Obama remained silent about Rahm’s terrible comments. Then during the Wisconsin uprising Obama was chasing John Boehner around DC trying to get a debt deal that would have significantly hurt Social Security and Medicare. ETc., etc..
I hardly think I’m a rube – and clearly you haven’t read my back catalog.
Good. I’ll take it.
Pam: sorry for sounding offensive. My comment wasn’t meant for you or your article. For that I apologize for not being clearer.
I do know your work and often comment positively about it. I appreciate what you do here; it’s very valuable.
I am just cynical about Pres Obama.
“…the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits…”
Now, if we could just get him to stick up for women in general.
LOL. That gave me a big laugh. Thanks.
Yeah Pam, I also hope my chuckles aren’t taken as me laughing at you. I certainly am not. I just had some serious oral battles with obamabots and needed a laugh.
Now Obama needs to say it himself, on his next NC visit, right into the camera, please. Spokespersons, particularly non-DC locally based spokespersons “affirming” his long-held opposition to similar amendments is one thing. A statement from the man himself on camera is quite another — and what his North Carolina supporters deserve.
Sooner would be better.
I noticed that…..
Unfortunate he did not use the power of his office to address these insane state’s abortion/sonogram bills, endorse OWS as a peaceful protest against the crooked bastards on Wall Street, or speak to the unfairness of the bank “settlemen”. And he apparently has no problem with indefinite imprisoning of even American citizens without charging them on the occassions he doesn’t assasinate them extrajudicially with a drone in a foreign country.
OTOH, you guys might have missed the fact that we building the GITMO prisoners a new socer field at the cost of $750,000 so as to make their stay with us more enjoyable. (Really, I didn;t make that up)
Fuck Obama. He only cares about the Hollywood OnePercenter Liberals and all they care about are limousine liberal identity politics issues. Obama’s willing to throw “the Liberals” a bone on gay rights or women’s issues so everyone can pretend he is isn’t serving the 1% with every breath he takes. Obama did the same thing and ended DADT when he extended the Bush tax cuts. All “the Liberals” swoon and ignore every horrible thing Obama has done for 3 years running (and will continue to do as long as he is allowed). Anyone who falls for Obama’s shit this time has no one to blame but him or her self.
When you ask a pol to do something and the pol does it, the thing to do is to thank them. To trash them is not where wisdom lies.
So, thank you President Obama.
You mistakenly assume that the affected LGBT in NC can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, and that there is some sort of de facto trade for a vote going to happen.
Very bigoted of you, thanks.
LGBT folks, wherever they are, are not monolithic nor single issue voters. Having a big influential voice, like Obama’s is, take a position against something that will do you personal harm is welcome. Because the harm isn’t when one is not a, ho did you say it –
We’re real people. We can welcome advocacy, from any source, and still not trade a vote for it.
The photo of Obama is disturbing on a variety of levels.
Here’s a little something for those that consider themselves “liberal.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLqKXrlD1TU
and the rubes are more than satisfied with the bone. Keeps them quiet almost indefinitely. Ahh, good times.
Can you really call it advocacy when it is a hollow and meaningless ploy to hold on to the gay vote?
Hello? What did I just say – LGBT people can walk and chew gum at the same time.
I welcome the statement, it will make a difference in NC come time for the Amendment One vote in May.
And I still ain’t voting for him.
In what sense?
I’m calling it like I see it and I wasn’t directing my anger at you, someone I don’t even know. Obama is the ultimate con man and he is pushing buttons. I assume — though I don’t know — that there is an immediate tactical advantage of having Obama weigh in but I except the price to be paid — not by you — is probably too high and you can be certain that the Obama Campaign expects payment.
You miss the point entirely.
I don’t care WHO the voice is, I care that the OUTCOME for the affected LGBT in NC goes the right way.
Do you care that the outcome for the Amendment One vote results in non-discrimination? Because if you don’t, well, that says tons.
That sounds about right to me. I love crows but not for food.
…say what? Sorry, just can’t get your drift. Thought I’d give you a chance to fix it before more of us think wrongly.
I for one will say THANK YOU to President Obama for this statement, and the Governor too. We can be a cynical as we want about their motives, but the results are the same: they said it, and it can make a difference. Good.
He’s done better but the cynic in me recognizes that it’s because he needs us to be re elected.
What don’t you get? Virginia had an amendment to it’s Constitution that does not recognize domestic partnerships. There was a chance in 2010 for this to be repealed (Mr Englin introduced it). I don’t remember the President saying boo to help move the ball on it in this state. It’s awfully convenient that he cares about this in an election year.
Can we all agree: while marriage equality (and other laws benefitting families) are important, that doesn’t mean we’re going to look down upon those who choose not to get married?
Also. I can’t believe it’s necessary to mention this: given the recent prominence of how–when women speak up on important public issues–the opposition attempts to shame them into silence. Using language most of us either left behind in early adolescence…or never picked up in the first place.
I don’t listen to buffoons on right-wing talk radio, and I sure didn’t expect to hear similar language in this forum. Except from the most obvious and obnoxious of trolls, anyhow.
Call me overly-PC if you like (hardly anyone has before). But I’m not going to apologize for asking that we treat each other with respect. Even when emotions are running high regarding the issue of the day.
It’s wonderful to have such a courageous and bold president that after he “did the math” he did “the right thing.” I’m now so glad that I contributed to his campaign.
Obama, despite numerous campaign swings through North Carolina, has never publicly addressed the issue of Amendment One, and now is not even now “issuing a statement”, but rather authorizing (presumably – I’m giving him an unearned benefit of the doubt) an obscure campaign operative to parrot some passive voice boiler-plate rhetoric about “clear records” and “long opposition”. Hardly what I would call a profile in courage.
But before writing this, I thought it would only be fair to check the White House website’s Civil Rights section and see if the president has anything there to address the “divisive and discriminatory” situation in NC. Nothing. But here is what I DID find, under the heading “Strengthen Anti-Discrimination Laws”:
“He supports repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in a sensible way that strengthens our armed forces and
our national security.”
So an administration which would have us believe that it is so very deeply committed to LGBT equality hasn’t even bothered to dust off and update its own Civil Rights webpage in well over a year.
Psssst…….I’m a female. I happened to “live in sin” and even had a child out of wedlock. I think it’s hysterical that the GOP wants a theocracy and wants to call all of us that don’t fit into their narrow little view of the world names.
I intend to remind everyone I meet that the GOP thinks that me- a mother of four and wife for almost 2 decades- is a slutty slut because I had sex before marriage, cohabitated and that had I been a real Christian I should have totally had twenty kids regardless of whether our household could support them. Trust me, it’s incredibly effective at convincing people that life choices are best left up to individuals rather than government.
I’ve read this statement dozens of times trying (desperately) to convince myself there was direct mention of the amendment by the President. All I come away with is some transitive implication that, in light of what he has said previously, and what the amendment says now, he is against said amendment. In principle. Based on his earlier statements. Says his NC campaign spokesman. Oy.
