This is a guest post by Ron Hill, a Republican who is appalled at the religious right hijacking of his party. — Pam
The whole purpose of my blog, republicans4freedom, is to point out the extremism that has become popular in my party. My hope is that rational conservatives will then work to help bring the GOP back to the common-sense middle. The truth is that our party has gone off the deep end. It’s as if we’re watching the slow, painful death of a major political party.
First it was Sarah Palin who couldn’t name one major newspaper she read, much less string together two logical sentences. Then came Christine O’Donnell who spoke out against masturbation and dabbled in witchcraft. About the same time we had Sharon Angle who suggested that armed insurrection was a possibility in opposing the policies of elected democrats. Then we had Michele Bachmann, whose only redeeming quality was making Sarah Palin look informed and thoughtful by way of comparison. Ms. Bachmann brought along her not-at-all gay husband, an unlicensed psychologist with a degree from an unaccredited on-line school. Their family business was found to be practicing the widely discredited and scientifically unsound “ex-gay” therapy. Both Bachmanns apparently believe Jesus is too busy not curing the gays to bother with minor matters like ending war, African famine, Asian epidemics, or Americans murdering one another in large numbers. Most recently, we were treated to Newt Gingrich, the thrice-divorced serial adulterer who – ironically – was the darling of the “family values” crowd. Among other extreme views, Mr. Gingrich seemed to imply that America should bring back child labor.
The GOP race just keeps getting more and more bizarre.
I expected some nutty statements from Rick Santorum, but his recent attack on Obama for not sharing true ”biblical values” went beyond the scope of decency; it was appalling. As they would say in the South – where we reserve the “t-word” for only the most serious of offenses – it was Tacky.
It’s beneath the dignity of a presidential candidate to question the Christian faith of his opponent based merely on a difference in theology.
If I sound harsh on a Republican – it’s only because I expect better from the party of Lincoln, Eisenhower and Goldwater. The nation, as well as the GOP, deserve better; the consequences of an intellectually stagnant and moribund Republican party are simply too awful.
But the truth is the GOP is intellectually stagnant. To disagree with the dominant GOP zeitgeist is tantamount to heresy. Everyone must toe the hard-right line of religious conservatives who ignore not only science but also obvious realities. As a result, American republicans have ceded leadership of the conservative movement to Canada and Britain where the conservative movement isn’t so weighted down with anti-science religious fanaticism.
It’s pretty amazing that Rick Santorum claims the mantle of Christianity while advocating against medical care for the poor, and while having no problem with middle class Americans losing everything and being forced into bankruptcy because they happen to have the bad luck of experiencing a serious medical problem.
According to Rick Santorum’s “biblical values” it’s ok to cut taxes on the wealthy while slashing health care for the poor. Jesus never said anything about the poor or the sick, did he?
According to Rick Santorum’s “biblical values” we should oppose science-based health care education in favor of “abstinence only” education. However, as both the preponderance of scientific research and the experience of the socially conservative “Bible Belt” states show; Mr. Santorum’s policies would not only deny fact-based instruction, but would increase out-of-wedlock teenage pregnancies, would increase the abortion rate, increase poverty, increase “shotgun” marriages (and then increase the divorce rate), and increase the incidents of HIV, hepatitis C and other STD’s.
And this is a “good” Christian policy?
There are Republicans (and Christians) who support science-based comprehensive sex education — programs that encourage abstinence until marriage but also include information on reducing unwanted pregnancies and how to reduce the risk of STD’s. There are Republicans who support a reasonable safety net for the poorest among us and the chronically mentally ill. There are Republicans who support government and faith-based efforts to reduce the rate of violence in our society and who support teaching non-violence in every level of schooling and in every lesson — not just as a Christian principle, but also as a principle of enlightened societies.
We had 300 murders in my city [New Orleans] last year – but Mr. Santorum sees his Christian duty not to work to teach and promote non-violence, but to oppose loving, peaceful American couples who simply want the same legal rights as other Americans.
Ironically, by opposing gay marriage equality, Mr. Santorum opposes the one thing that would encourage greater monogamy in the glbt community, that would help reduce the incidence of Hepatitis C, HIV and other STD’s; that would promote stable, committed relationships (which is certainly a worthwhile goal of society whether one agrees with homosexuality or not), and which would provide greater stability for children being raised by a glbt couple. These are all good goals for society and government.
It’s dangerous for any one party or politician to believe their values are those of God. Doing so suggests a dangerous arrogance and promotes an “us against them” mentality that divides Americans and pits one group of citizens against another. This is no way to lead a pluralistic society.
The GOP can do better, and America requires better. I’ve been a conservative all my life, but would have no choice but to vote for President Obama if Rick Santorum is the GOP nominee. Privately, many Republicans tell me the same thing.
For the rational wing of the Republican Party,
Ron Hill
NOTE FROM PAM: And to underscore how extreme Santorum is, he has no problem sharing his fringe views on video, where it can come back and bite him in the @ss. Talk about being out of touch with mainstream America. Just look at what has popped up in the last few days. Buzzfeed unearthed this 2011 gem about jailing doctors who perform abortions (it makes you wonder what punishment he’d mete out to the woman “ordering the hit” or to doctors that supply birth control to women):
I believe that any doctor who performs an abortion…I would advocate that any doctor should be criminally charged for doing so. I’d never support a criminalization of abortion for mothers, but I do for people who perform them.
Or how about this lunacy — that prenatal care will lead to abortions? CBS’s Bob Schieffer was almost in disbelief.
“You sound like you’re saying the purpose of prenatal care is to cause to have people to have abortions, to get more abortions in this country,” CBS host Bob Schieffer told Santorum on Sunday. “I think any number of people would say that’s not the purpose at all.”
“That’s simply not true,” Santorum replied. “The bottom line is that a lot of prenatal tests are done to identify deformities in utero, and the customary procedure is to encourage abortions.”
…“Do you not want any kind of prenatal testing?” Schieffer wondered. “I mean, would we just turn our back on science?”
“Look, people have the right to do it,” Santorum admitted. “But to have the government force people to provide it free just has to me — is a bit loaded. … I think the president has a very bad record on the issue of abortion and children who are disabled, who are in the womb, and I think this is simply a continuation of that idea.”
Contrary to Santorum’s assertion, the Department of Human Services Office on Women’s Health says that “medical checkups and screening tests help keep you and your baby healthy during pregnancy.”

President Obama is going to be re-elected in a Landslide.
Where’s the surprise in this?
“Holier than thou!” has been around a lonnnng time.
)
The fact that Santorum’s already backing off it, and is snarfing and goorpling about how he meant something else, is enough. The GOP leaders are all about stepping in shit and then having someone else tell them about it, and then trying to change shoes in mid-sentence.
I’d add, Pam: focusing on them, as they continue to talk out of their asses, instead of pointing out the hosing that Barack Obama keeps on giving us, is just more herring-dragging-for-Obama. At some point, you’re going to have to start believing in the reality of Obama, because the reality he’s created in three years of selling us out, sure believes in us.
Rick Santorum is the bestest bud that Barack Obama, and his chances for re-election, now have.
And you know that perfectly well.
Unbelievable. My country keeps sinking lower and lower. This is what you get with unsane people like Rick Santorum running around spewing nonsense.
Thank you, Ron Hill.
Good to know that there are some Republicans out there who are reasonable and sane. May their tribe flourish. Thanks, Pam
“According to Rick Santorum’s “biblical values” it’s ok to cut taxes on the wealthy while slashing health care for the poor. Jesus never said anything about the poor or the sick, did he?”
Last I heard, Jesus was renting out money-changer tables in the temple at $10k a seat.
“The consequences of an intellectually stagnant and moribund republican party are simply too awful…”
I’d say that “intellectually stagnant and (morally) moribund” would perfectly describe Barack Obama’s time in the White House. And if you think that the consequences of that haven’t been awful, then I guess you’ve been living in Shangri-la ever since the mid-terms.
His high Popeness Santorum would like to return to the time of Jesus when the population of the planet earth was only 1 million people and life expectancy was 25-35 years. This in part explain his mania about women’s vaginas and procreating.
An absolute freak show.
Any politician who makes a spectacle out of their faith should be automatically disqualified from public office. In countries like Great Britain and France it is considered very impolite and weird to do so. Most people simply know better there.
Take Tony Blair. He is every bit as nutty about religion as George Bush. Deeply Catholic, he also prayed before important decisions. But he was wise enough to keep his beliefs to himself until he was out of office
Bush and Blair are about as religious as my kitchen table. I may not be a good Christian but I can recognize one when I see him/her.
A rational, thoughtful, reasonable Republican willing to publicly and eloquently disavow the radicals in his own party — who knew?
Thank you and well-done.
Thanks Pam and yes Ron the party has been kidnapped by the crazy people. My late father stop being a R when gwb the lesser took away his rights. It was tough on him being a WW II vet.
I haves said this any number of times ;
The neocons and corporatists have a hijacked the word conservative , they do not want to conserve anything they do not want to conserve anything , they do not want to consider the environment , they do not want to conserve our economy, nor the middle class, they do not want to conserve our military and I cannot think of 1 thing they do want to conserve except for their own seat of power
they have hijacked the word and the party
From the first paragraph:
and…oxymoron, no need to read any farther.
This is one of the things I don’t like about Pam – that she would even think that this is worth putting on FDL. It’s just sad. And even sadder that this is a Republican that can’t even get the most basic things right (ex., her name is SharRon Angle. Srsly, wingnut, get a clue).
They are the enemy. Get off the fence and fight. There is no space for “civility”. These people are literally the enemies of everything we believe in. Stop trying to find common ground, and start fighting. Crap like this just makes the conservatives right about us when they accuse us of weakness. We are weak – they at least know the difference between allies and enemies.
Oh, and one more thing. Promoting religious crap like this only legitimizes the Santorums of the world. Outright rejection of Iron age myths and fairy tales designed to soothe the fee fees of weak people is the only way forward. We shouldn’t ever be legitimizing anything that anyone to the right of Dennis Kucinich says.
50 years ago the Republicans were deeply worried that Kennedy would take orders from the Vatican. He had to make a public speech about it. Today one of their top candidate’s platform is basically Catholic theology verbatim.
Nice to have you here, Ron! Welcome.
Quoting from something I wrote a while back, WRT how the GOP came to this pass:
As I said back then, people like Anderson aren’t viable candidates for dogcatcher if not for the corporate-bigot alliance called “the Southern Strategy”. You know, that little thing that most Republicans claim either never happened or died with Nixon’s hopping the chopper for San Clemente? (Which is why Michael Steele’s spilling the beans on the Southern Strategy’s decades-long use by the Republicans caused the hardcore GOPers to come down on him like a ton of bricks.)
Here’s Reagan Revolution architect Lee Atwater in 1981, explaining how the Southern Strategy works (and notice that Atwater, long after Nixon left office, wasn’t talking about the Southern Strategy in the past tense):
The Southern Strategy not only helps Big Business by enlisting the help of bigots in cutting the amount of taxes paid by rich people, it helps bigots by allowing them to cloak their bigotry in the language of deficit hawkery: “It’s not that we hate gays/blacks/women/Latinos/etc., but we simply must get our fiscal house in order without making the rich people — erm, I mean ‘the engines of job creation’ — pay any more in taxes.”
But of course, after a while, the corrosive, crazy-making effects of all this amoral cognitive dissonance start to show in ways even a FOX-dominated media cannot deny. (Which is of course why the conservatives wanted Citizens United so badly — they have to have a crushing financial advantage to smother the truth.)

Here, here! Look, the crazy over THERE.
Corporatist victory is assured no matter which puppet wins the election.
Yes.
Blair converted so that he could be absolved of his sins on a weekly basis, just like Newt. W, on the other hand, went the “born again” route so he could have all his sins absolved at the end of his life.
I hate to tell Ron, but his Republican Party is now called the Democrats. His olde Republican party is made up of Authoritarians. Authoritarians make up 25% of the population. Twenty-four out of twenty five Authoritarians are in the Republican Party. Since 33% of America is Republican, it means that 24 out of 33 Republicans are Authoritarians.
Every since Ronald Reagan united the Authoritarians, Big Business, and the War mongering Neocons, the Republican brand has been solid. And anyone wanting to get elected in the Republican Party must kowtow to the Authoritarian two thirds.
“50 years ago the Republicans were deeply worried that Kennedy would take orders from the Vatican. He had to make a public speech about it. Today one of their top candidate’s platform is basically Catholic theology verbatim.”
The irony is made greater owing to the fact that Republicans, the likes of Thaddeus Stevens and Abe Lincoln, emancipated the slaves opposed to the fear mongering religious corporate seeking to protect business models while enslaving people? I wonder if these folks buy penance in the form of a tax deductible contribution to public charity. Martin Luther would appreciate it! Seems America needs a reformation of sorts……
Yup. I had exactly the same experience with my late father, a WWII vet and passionately an “Eisenhower Republican”. He was unusually quiet, but still there, during Reagan. It was when Bush Senior started joyfully blowing up Iraq tanks from his Chris-Craft luxury fishing boat like he was playing a computer game, when my father lost it. Pretty sad.
I like Rick. He’s honest and straight forward about his values and what he wants to do, just the way Hitler was. If elected he’ll do just as he says. That’s more then I can say about Barry Obama , whose proven time and time again to be just another lying scheming sack of shit. Why can’t we get a person like Rick to run on our side once in a while?
The Republican Party is a rotting corpse animated by evil. Just like it’s brother, the Democratic Party.
Corporate control. Especially the media which determines, through its coverage, those selected to be elected.
Santorum is the worse of the four–and that’s saying a lot.
Actually, I don’t think the Dem Party is a rotting corpse animated by evil–it’s a well-embalmed corpse animated by evil.
How else are they going to cover Obama’s feckless ass?
When Palin took her hat out of the ring (maybe, it’s gonna go back in…who knows?) Digby must have wept like a child, to have her big-ju-ju fear doll taken out of her “Obama sucks less!” toy chest.
Spot on. My question is if Santorum accepts the church’s claim of papal infallibility and how he would regard counsel from the Pontiff.
Pope Panzerfaust XIV:
“President Santorum; we are being sorely tried by all of the ungodly accusations of priests molesting children. Surely you wouldn’t refuse a request by the Holy Father, to use your new clout to help bring this witch-hunt to a screeching halt? Thank you and Mary protect you.”
You don’t know me very well, or are a masochist for continuing to read PHB – I do a lot of “common ground” and critical eye on both sides of the aisle posts. In my world — and perhaps your world view is quite different — there are more shades of gray than not. Not all Republicans are evil, even though I may disagree on most, if not all, of the party’s (as it stands today) positions. I certainly haven’t been impressed by a lot of Dems — most pols are just that — politicians. It’s rare to come across someone who is actually seeking or holding public office to do more than burnish their own images or line their pockets when they return to the private sector. Anyone who fell for all of the hopey, changey stuff in 2008 are the ones who got the rude awakening. Obama’s not a failure, he’s not a hero, he’s not evil. He’s a pol. And as Ron pointed out, the GOP has gone completely off of the rails. They need to just melt down and start over.
Ever since Ronald Reagan began courting the “Christian Coalition” and getting into bed with the likes of Jerry Falwell this day has been inevitable for the Republican Party. The Republican hierarchy gleefully embraced every new social conservative litmus test that came along as long as it helped cement a reliable voting block.
So now the inmates are running the asylum and Mr. Hill wonders what happened to the party of Lincoln? Quite simply, it was sold to the highest bidder and “rational conservatives” not only went along with it, they actively encouraged it.
All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing. The party of Lincoln sold its soul to the devil and the devil is calling in his chips.
Obama is not “evil”, but what he’s done, IS evil, in that he has done rehab on the assholes who’ve nearly ruined the country, and in that he’s sustained so many of the evil things they they promulgated.
And in doing those two things, he’s squandered a golden opportunity to help change the values of america, and that squandering; that abdication of his responsibility to lead; most definitely is evil.
Total Bullshit.
Corrupt Conservatism is based on lies and self centered greed and bigotry. Conservatism is based on phony snake oil ideologies of ‘no new taxes’ and ‘smaller government’ who’s sole purpose is to cripple public agencies allowing Republicans to privatize them for $$$ greedy profit $$$ and power. For the most obvious proof just listen to the bigoted hatred of the leaders of Conservatism, Fox News, Newt Gingrich, Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Roger Ailes, Bill Kristol, Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, etc. etc.

Posting sentence-of-the-week…
I would add, the party of FDR has substantially done the same thing, to a somewhat lesser degree, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to reward them and dance naked in the street and send money to Obama and the dems, because of that ineffective “lesser”…
“…there are more shades of gray than not…”
Not now. Not after 8 years of the bloody idiocy of Bush & Co. When Obama took office, there was more “black and white” to be dealt with, than for any president since Roosevelt. That Obama perceived going bi-partisan to be the way to use those big majorities and that clear mandate for real change, is going to be seen by historians as one of the major brainfarts of the american presidency.
Just speaking it reminds me that anything but a loss of the presidency by Obama will be rewarding him for doing worse-than-nothing. We need him to be privatized to some think-tank with the “centrist” values that he adores.
Wouldn’t be surprised if the Obama Super Pac is contributing to Santorum’s Super Pac.
The “center” has move far to the right. Democrats in the U.S. are the equivalent of the conservatives in Great Britain.
I see Santorum as a wannabe Elmer Gantry of our times. There is always something concealed going on behind that liturgical facade, no?
Burt Lancaster was more artful in the Gantry role than is Santorum. There was something plausible about Lancaster’s Gantry, where you could see how a substantial number of people got taken in by it all.
I’m more interested in cosmology than theology. I think, to each his own, when the religious trappings are in play. For some reason I just don’t give a hoot about it.
Good comparison. Santorum’s nothing more than a huckster. If it weren’t for the terminal ignorance of large swaths of the public this guy would be relegated to the dust bin of history.
Obama resurrected a party committed to destroying the nation by his “bipartisanship” fetish. The Republican Party was given a pass on all their crimes against the American people by the Big Zero.
Hardly a cause for celebration.
Not helpful. Here’s my suggestion. The fiscal- conservative, social libertarian faction of the republican party should be encouraged to recognize that their natural home is now the (presently incumbent in the Senate & Whitehouse) establishment wing of the Democrats. Objectively this shouldn’t be too hard since Obama is comparable to Saint Ronald in this area.
Everyone will just have to hold their nose and vote for the incumbency this time around because the alternative is just too horrible.
In 2013, the progressives can split from the democrats, and call themselves the Democrats. The remainder, republicans & establishment democrats, can start calling themselves Republicans. At this point we can reset the socio-political clock to 1980, with the only point of agreement between the new factions being that the Taliban can go fall off the edge of the world for all we care…
Mr Santorum is what the British use as their ultimate expression of disapproval….Tiresome.
Also declasse….
Oh, and Mr Hill, your party pretty much disavowed Mr Lincoln in the debates. Some of the candidates did what John Wilkes Booth could not do—destroy his legacy.
In Poland, where the government is sympathetic to the Church, the priests get suspended sentences for their crimes and put back into their parishes; and the accuser gets run out of town and nationally scapegoatd.
Expect the same here from Cardinal Dolan and his good friend Paul Ryan and Ricky
“There are Republicans who support…” Yeah,sure…Name 3!
Did Cardinal Dolan get his foto ID yet? The next Pope Election is coming up soon and Diebold is….no, wait
did you mean “Blah and white”?
“…the party of FDR has substantially done the same thing,”
I agree and have said so on numerous other posts.
Seems to me the party committed to destroying the country — which I think is true — is rapidly destroying itself. I can’t see any way they can continue on this insane path of more hysterical extremism without splintering. Now Santorum, their current national front-runner, is running as an out and out Theocrat who wants to ban contraceptives. There’s no WAY he wins. What do the Repubs do after that? Where do they go?
If Obama’s done anything at all, it’s been to drive these people completely off the deep end just by being Black and breathing, apparently. Someone upthread said ‘anything short of a loss of the presidency’ was rewarding him for being the worst president since Hitler or whatever — well, okay. But if his only legacy is the marginalization or destruction of the Republican party, that’s enough of a start for me — that is until Progressive Jesus descends, tosses Cheney and co into the pokey and makes everything fair and green again.
Rick Santorum isn’t running for the presidency, he’s running for the Papacy, or at least a Papacy with a radical Republican twist.
Sorry, if you live in states like NC, perching on the precipice of staying Blue, staying home and not voting D is a death sentence. We saw that in the apathy of 2010, which handed over control of our Gen Assembly to Rs for the first time since Reconstruction.
Question to Ron Hill. Do you really think Mitt Romney is any better who is in agreement with a lot of what Santorum is saying in regard to social issues, against marriage equality, supports DOMA and against a woman’s right to choose. He just repackages Santorum’s rants in different wording, but the end result is all the same. Religious beliefs trump civil rights in their narrow distorted views of reality. Both are dangerous and bad for this country and the future of democracy.
Hey Folks… I’m a Liberal, but moderate.
Honestly, if there was a serious GOP candidate I could trust, I’d most likely vote for them. Many of my friends are also angry with decisions that the President has made. One of the biggies is medical marijuana; the man campaigned on the promise that he wouldn’t sic the DEA on folks. One thing he has total control over, and he’s gone back on his word. Nobody to blame but him, the big liar.
Sadly, the only other alternatives (Santorum, Romney, Paul, etc) are so terrifying I’ll be voting for Obama again.
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right…
here I am, stuck in the middle with you (all)
