Please tell me that I didn’t just step out of a time machine. I guess I probably didn’t travel too far back in time, given we’re talking about Republicans in the 2012 GOP Clown Car cycle, because this is what Rick Santorum said just yesterday in an interview with CNN’s John King about the Pentagon considering relaxing rules regarding women and frontline roles in combat.
“Look, I want to create every opportunity for women to be able to serve this country, and they do so in an amazing and wonderful way. They’re a great addition to the – and have been for a long time – to the armed services of our country,” Santorum said. “But I do have concerns about women in frontline combat.”
He added, “I think that can be a very compromising situation, where people naturally may do things that may not be in the interests of the mission because of other types of emotions that are involved. And I think that’s probably – you know, it already happens, of course, with the camaraderie of men in combat. But I think it would be even more unique if women were in combat. I think that’s probably not in the best interests of men, women or the mission.”
Excuse me? What is he talking about — PMS? That women are too emotional generally? Who knows, he didn’t have an explanation, any studies to cite, nothing remotely resembling facts. Given that men are just as governed by their hormones (witness the inability of so many pols to keep their zippers up), why doesn’t the idea that testosterone renders some men incapable of handling a mission if their “little brains” are in control?
I’m just sick of it – women in this cycle are seen as obstacles to growing the economy, incapable of making decisions about whether she should bear children, and now, harboring some unspecified emotions that render them incapable of serving in more frontline roles in our armed forces. You’d think these Republicans had no capable, competent, strong women in their personal and professional lives to blow up these stereotypes. In Santorum’s case, he cannot even explain why he thinks this, what it’s based on other than his imagination (and it’s a sad imagination at that).
Why are women in the bullseye of disrespect, scorn and outright hate? Are some men so insecure (and at such a heightened level of personal and political anxiety) that seeing women — with our differences and commonalities — as entities that they simply cannot psychologically deal with? It comes across as a distinct insecurity — as if the power of the va-jay-jay, the uterus and breasts are shriveling their manhood by the second and they need to somehow reclaim it/reassert it. Otherwise how can you explain garbage like this? It doesn’t even fall into the realm of intellectual discourse at this point.
Maybe Santorum was channeling his fellow Clown Car occupant Newt Gingrich, who was way ahead of Man-On-Dog in this arena.
If combat means living in a ditch, females have biological problems staying in a ditch for thirty days because they get infections and they don’t have upper body strength.
– Newt, during an address, “Renewing American Civilization,” Reinhardt College, (7 January 1995)
UPDATE: Hahahaha…this AM Santorum tries to clean up his mess on the Today show, saying he was talking about the emotions of MEN, getting distracted because they want to protect the women. Sorry, Rick this doesn’t help matters:
“When you have men and women together in combat, I think men have the emotions when you see a woman in harm’s way. I think that’s something that’s natural, that’s very much in our culture to be protective,” he said. According to the presidential candidate, the “natural inclination to not focus on the mission but to try to be in a position where you might want to protect someone” could compromise men’s ability to stay focused, and the very reason that the Israeli military doesn’t allow women to serve in combat roles.”

Ricky, eliminate the frontlines and there won’t be an issue.
Next?
Perhaps a momentary concern, but looking at the experience of women as police officers or firefighters on the front lines should have dispelled that notion or at least, suspended it long enough to go take a look at the data.
Rick is like the eternal optimist digging in the pile of shit looking for the pony.
He knows there’s a hot-button issue in there somewhere, something that will get the rubes all inflamed, he just can’t put together a well-defined phrase to get it going.
That doesn’t mean he’ll let lack of a cohesive understanding of the issue stop him from attempting to use it as a wedge.
Sometimes these guys look for all the world like a group of idiots hammering square pegs into round holes.
Why am I seeing General Jack Ripper ranting about “precious bodily fluids” in this rant by Santorum?
A better question: Should neocon chickenhawks be the first to fight on the front line, since they love and advocate war.
+1 for that…
What dumbasses like Santorum are incapable of grasping is that war has changed. There really aren’t any frontlines in combat anymore. A truck driver’s just as likely, if not moreso, to be in the line of fire, as the infantry is. EOD, MPs, truck drivers, civil affairs, they all see combat, there’s really no lines at all, just areas more dangerous than others. This is the new reality of war, not an aberration.
But Santorum wouldn’t know that, having learned everything he knows about war from John Wayne movies.
Kind of reminded me more of John Wayne or Ted Nugent, who amusingly, were both draft dodgers.
I have never understood people looking for fairness in terms of gender in the military. It does not exist. For me, that starts with boys having to register for the draft at eighteen. Girls do not. If you want fairness, girls should have the right to fight but they should also have the responsibility.
Rick wants to protect wimmen. Just heard it.
huh? since when? Link, please. Maybe I’m forgetting something…
I don’t know if it’s still that way, but I had to, back in ’92.
Righteous rant, Pam, but as you may know (or not), this is just lil icky ricky parroting out the fundie/evangelical line, whereby teh little wimminz is jest 2d to teh menz. Teh menz sit “next to God” (serious about this; this is what they *believe,* subscribe to, cling & grasp), whilst teh little wimminz are to be under the thumb, ruled & dominated by teh menz.
In many ways, what icky ricky spewed forth is no big surprise. Doug Coe’s fundie “Family” of MEN has been pushing & pushing this dogma since the 1930s (well, it goes back way longer than that, but that’s when Doug Coe started up). It’s all enshrined in all those “righteous” rightwing zealot “pastors,” like the sickeningly egregious Pat Robertson and his vile “700 Club.”
My whole family goes along with this notion, so *they* would not be offended in the slightest by this. It’s red meat to the Frothy One’s base, frankly. A true dog whistle.
Many of Santorum’s base were extremely *against* Michele Bachmann running for Pres, but not for any *sensible* reason. It was simply because Bachmann had a va-jay-jay & titties & those disgusting “cycles,” so the male-dominate tribe Xnayed Bachmann from the git-go… too sinful to have one of the lesser XX chromosomes “running the show.” It was not Bachmann’s “place” to do that.
And so: on it goes…
Thanks for clarification. There is no draft now, whether you’re male or female. I would agree that if any draft happens – which it never ever will because the 1% don’t want it – then it should apply equally to women and men.
Register for the Draft, It’s Still the Law

For what it’s worth, conscription was discontinued in 1973, but registration is still the law, and the draft can be reinstated at any time.
I firmly believe that if we had a conscripted army of men and women involuntarily drafted, we would be much less likely to engage in our current wars of American Exceptionality that lure us to all the foreign shores that hold oil reserves.
Vietnam era politics suspended the draft, but the all-volunteer army led by Christianist generals has amped up our military adventuring.
Pam, recently I went to see a play, not “The Last Shot,” can’t recall and don’t find the playbill to say the name of it.
While sexual assault in the military is not confined to women, there seems to be little justice and a lot of oppression associated with it. The stats on PTSD, what they use for treatment after military sexual assault (another military legal term that I don’t have exactly right) are horrific.
I was going to write a diary about it, but I have not done it yet. However, it is NOT SAFE for women in the military, mainly because of this. So while I would like to defend it as a choice/ or a not-choice for some who are facing economic peril to enlist, I really have to say that I wish we would talk about the reality of sexual assault, rape and Murder.
Men are still required to Register with the Selective Service, but the draft is inactive. Registration is tied to eligibility for financial aid, federal jobs, and federal job training.
Check the Selective Service website for more info.
also, too Santorum suks. Obviously he has no idea how average the average troop is: these are not super human people. Women can handle the demands just fine and in many cases better.
Santorum is no different from the Taliban – men must rule, women must obey. Men must rule because when you look around you it is so obvious that they are so good at it………
Thanks. I stand corrected, and I didn’t know about this. Good info, and thanks to all who posted it here.
I still think it’s highly unlikely that a draft will occur, but I agree that it’s unfair if women are not included in this.
Maybe Ricky is just admitting that men soldiers can’t be trusted not to sexually abuse women when conditions might allow them to get away with it.
Rick “Frothy” Santorum is afraid of women.
Well we knew Santorum wasn’t really worried about the womens’s emotions or concerns didn’t we? I mean who really thought he was worried about the girls being scared? Seems to me like the “emotion” as far as men go in this issue is the insatiable desire to rape their female comrades in arms. I would never allow my daughter to join any of the military services because of the danger she would be in from her own fellow soldiers and she is able to hold her own against 3 brothers.
I think Santorum just doesn’t think these men should be faced with such temptation. Men like him spend a lot of time worrying about the straight men in the military being raped by gays, but never acknowledge that those same straight men have a less than stellar history. And yes I do know that straight men are more likely to harm gays than the other way around. and not all straight soldiers are like that (my son is joining the army and he has very strong convictions concerning these issues), but enough are or women wouldn’t be in such danger in the armed services.
Women should not be prevented from becoming psychotic imperial killers just because they are women in my view. And in fairness to women they should be included in the next conscription. Sanitorium thinks women are weak and stupid and need a man to tell them what to do. It’s easy to see why some women are offended by this.
If American women are driven into the arms of the Democrats by this however they will play into the agenda of the 1%. Brothers and sisters, homo and hetero, have a common interest in overthrowing the Fascist Uniparty. There is no justice for anybody under the current regime.
Whole lot of ignorance from yahoos that have never served in the military or with women in the military. Such total ignorance…
EXACTLY! Nobody talks about the propensity of MEN to let THEIR emotions run away with them.
Isn’t RAPE a common tactic of war? Hmmm… Nothing to do with MALE wrongheadedness right? (SARC).
My daughters will never be in the service either. And will never work for a PRIVATE contractor in a warzone either. Those guys don’t even fall under the UCMJ.
What is ironic is that the natural world is filled with STRONG WOMEN.
Lion women hunt the food while the lion men sleep.
Try standing between a Bear women and her cubs.
OR try standing between a Crocodile women and her eggs.
Its a shame that Rick Santorum and his wife weren’t spiders. She would have had a great meal after the pregnancy…
This guy stepped out of a time machine. His world is Salem 1690s.
To be fair, my sons will never likely serve either. IT wasn’t that long ago when wealthy men would purchase commissions, become officers, and then lead tens of thousands of men into the gaping maw of death because the officers lacked any comprehension of war whatsoever. Because brave young men were being led by total idiots who had the money to purchase a commission. Even into the days of the British Empire in the First World War. It was only after the massacre of officer and enlisted by the brutal technological advances that MERIT and EXPERIENCE began to matter more than “aristocracy” or “nobility” in the UK.
Fast Forward to today. The Chickenhawks that send our boys and girls into death are no different than the dandyasses who purchased commissions in the old days. And who was the most likely to survive? the dandyass. He had a value to be ransomed back alive. No point in killing him.
So, based on all the comments here, I would agree with this idea:
The declaration of war can only be by those who have to fight in that war, from the front.
Women should be allowed to serve. Not only that, but ONLY Women should be on the front lines. If we had a 100% female infantry and artillery corps, how many civilian rapes would you hear about? Not too many. How many military sexual assaults by our own servicewomen against each other? Not too many.
And since the only people who can declare the war will be those in the front lines, and since those will only be women, then that means the only people who can declare war will be WOMEN. And that means the next president has to be a woman.
Hillary?
The data on military sexual assault is worse for non-combat enlisted, not that it is not bad for combat enlisted. Just worse for non-com.
I’ll find the data and post a link.
Here is the data, last year 2010. Panetta reports likely 19,000 assaults last year, though only a sixth are reported (19K comes from extrapolation of that info).
The files will download from clicking on the year.
made me laugh.
I swear, they long for Medieval times where The Lord was in his castle, and the serfs were slaves and lived to about 35 and the Lord had first dibs on the hymens of the newly married brides of ALL his people. No one could read, except a few higher up priests and life was “short brutish and nasty”.
and then, they all went Crusading when they weren’t burning witches and faggots.
I can hardly STAND the atmosphere in this country anymore.
ICK
PS: the word “LORD” for Jesus and God came into general use around this time…so what does THAT say?
It sure wasn’t in use when Jesus walked…….if he ever did and wasn’t some delusion of Paul’s
Good f-ing grief! There are some real reasons to be concerned about women serving in a combat zone(For example, did everyone know that we had a baby born out on a ship in a war theater not that long ago?), their emotional state is not one of them. Santorum speaks like a true putz who has never seen combat. It’s an emotional experience no matter what gender you are. That’s why we have MEN in need of psychological services following combat.
It’s an insult to the concept of fraternity that Santorum doesn’t think am man feels any fealty to the other MEN in their combat units and that those feelings are present and help fuel their desire to serve more than one cycle in a combat zone.
Easy solution to his problem as related in his “clean-up” — put women in the front lines with gay men.
Problem solved.
Santorum is just parroting the long-stated “objections.” I’ve been hearing this “women don’t belong in combat/as firefighters/as police officers” etc. etc. since third-wave feminism in the early seventies, for the very reasons he’s saying.
Men will be distracted because their “instinct” and upbringing is to protect women, and that will get the men killed because they won’t be doing their jobs. yada yada.
Not new.
Just more proof that Santorum is, indeed, still living in the 16th century to which his version of faith has perhaps, advanced.
There’s no way this guy should be a serious candidate in the 21st century but … there we are.
If he knows what’s good for him, he SHOULD be.
My brother-in-law is a cop in Dallas. Training officer. He said one thing they teach rookies is DON’T underestimate (the power) of women and children.
My mom used to say, “His tongue musta got in front his eye tooth and he couldn’t see what he was saying.”
ANybody elses’s mom ever say that???
Y’know, when one realizes little Ricky Santorum is a twisted misogynistic, homo-obsessed, Bible-humping whackjob, it all makes perfect sense.
I have commanded during a combat engagement. My only emotions were to protect my men and destroy the enemy. Exactly what emotions are involved, Mr Santorum? When I used to share a late night off watch tumbler of scotch with my chief engineer in what way did my being a woman affect cameradamie?
Not familiar with the Mujeres Libres of the Spanish Civil War, are you, Mr Santorum….he sounds more and more like Francisco Franco Bahamonde
Everything this guy believes and says seems to be filtered through his Catholicism and nothing more. Women as 2nd class creatures, LTBG people being sick, etc. Pandering to the rich and powerful. It’s all from the Vatican playbook.
I had to register and I was HS class 83.
You are required to register selective service.

Never heard that saying, but love it!
That is why he reminds me of Franco(whose tomb is now a Catholic Basilica, btw…made such by Dr Ratzinger)
