Senator Cheryl Pflug (R-Maple Valley) announced today her support for marriage equality.
I have been a longtime supporter of human equality. I do not feel diminished by having another human being experience the same freedom I am entitled to exercise. I would feel diminished by denying another human the ability to exercise those same rights and freedoms.
Sen. Pflug joins her Republican colleague Sen. Steve Litzow, who announced his support for marriage equality two days ago.
In 2009 Sen. Pflug voted for the Domestic Partnership Expansion Bill (SB 5688). During the last legislative session she voted for every key piece of pro-LGBT legislation, including a bill that put gay and lesbian parents on the same legal footing as straight parents (HB 1267); a bill that provides for the automatic recognition of married same-sex couples from out of state as domestic partners when they are in Washington state (HB 1649); and the safe schools bill (HB 1163).

Contacting my Olympia delegation won’t do any good. I live in the 43rd District, and my senator, Ed Murray, and one of my representatives, Jamie Pedersen, are sponsors of the bill. My other representative, Frank Chopp, just tells constituents to go away and bother someone else: he’s Speaker of the House and is too busy to deal with actual voters.
But when Republicans can do this in Washington state? Most cool.
Maybe it portends a sea change in US politics. Just sayin’.
Sen Murray and Rep Pedersen will still appreciate hearing that you support their efforts. But I get what you’re saying. The beauty of being represented by pro-equality lawmakers is that you’re in good hands. The down side is that it can seem like there’s nothing left for you to do. Well, have I got just the thing for you, Gregory! Washington United for Marriage REALLY NEEDS PHONEBANKERS in Seattle to call people in swing districts and persuade them to contact their legislators. And since we know NOM is just waiting for the right time to pounce, donations are needed from anyone who has the means.
I’m actually kind of proud of these guys. It’s hard to fight herd mentality and do the right thing sometimes. Despite that at least 2 ARE doing the right thing.
I was bragging about Murray and Pedersen, not complaining
