Debate on Same-Sex Marriage
The region’s leading voices for and against same-sex marriage face off about the issue and the upcoming legislative battle in Olympia. Arguing in favor of expanding marriage rights are State Representative Laurie Jinkins (D-27) and writer Dan Savage. On the other side, Antioch Bible Church Pastor Ken Hutcherson and attorney Stephen Pidgeon make their case for restricting marriage to one man and one woman. The event is particularly timely since Governor Chris Gregoire and Democrats in the legislature announced their intentions on January 4 to pass a bill that would make Washington the seventh state to grant full marriage rights to gay couples. A campaign led largely by religious conservatives is already leading a effort to stop them in the legislature and, if needed, by running a referendum. Moderated by KIRO’s Dave Ross. Co-presented by The Stranger and Town Hall.
