With the recent case of the former Macy’s employee, Natalie Johnson, who was fired because she harassed a transgender customer, the right wing group, the Liberty Counsel, is acting as if it won the lottery.
The organization has been on a massive press tour pushing its version of the story.
The young lady was fired because she violated the store policy which allows the transgender community to use whichever changing room they see fit. She took it upon herself to accost a transgender teen who was coming from one of the changing rooms. The teen and her friends complained and when informed of the policy, the young lady said she would not follow it.
That is why she was fired. She is presently suing – via the Liberty Counsel – claiming that her religious beliefs were violated.
Now while neither she nor the organization can seem to decided whether or not to use the phony angle of religious persecution or the even more fallacious image of how Macy’s policy would lead to women being violated (this sort of thing has never happened, neither in Macy’s nor in places where transgender inclusive policies exist), the one angle both seem to agree on is smearing the transgender community.
First was an overly friendly interview on Fox News where the anchor, Shannon Bream, let Johnson and Liberty Counsel head Mat Staver go unchallenged about the situation even to the point of saying awful things about the transgender community.
From Equality Matters:
During the segment, Fox’s Bream listened quietly as her guests repeated a number of anti-trans smears, including referring to the transgender teen as “a man… wearing lipstick” and promoting the right-wing myth that transgender protections put women and girls “in jeopardy”
. . . Instead of accurately portraying the problem of discrimination based on gender identity, Bream allowed her guests to openly chuckle as they trivialized the experience of the transgender teen and attacked Macy’s non-discrimination policy.
Staver also made an appearance on the radio show of right-wing host Janet Parshall. Parshall, who once referred to same-sex families as “pretend families,” of course let Staver go on a lying tangent as to supposedly how dangerous Macy’s policy is:
As you mentioned before the break, this really puts every woman at risk. A father doesn’t want to take his twelve, thirteen year-old daughter there to go to Macy’s and let her go into a woman’s fitting room, not knowing whether there may be some pedophile, pervert, or some other kind of person who’s waiting to do a sexual assault on this young woman, or your wife. Any woman does not want to go into a men’s restroom, a men’s fitting room, or a woman’s fitting room, thinking that they may be watched by a peeping tom or even worse, sexually assaulted or raped, and in fact this is a liability waiting to happen and Macy’s needs to fix this problem.
Lastly comes an item from the Liberty Counsel’s blog which may signal that perhaps Staver and company reached too much in pushing this phony panic:
Another Macy’s employee has contacted Liberty Counsel and shared about repeated issues with men using the women’s fitting rooms. This individual asked to remain anonymous out of fear of losing her job. The employee said she constantly has to ask men to leave the women’s fitting rooms. In addition, she has been asked numerous times by mothers who have daughters in the fitting rooms to please ask the men to leave the women’s dressing rooms.
Here is where it gets tricky. Two questions need to be asked.
Were these transgender women, rather than men accompanying their loved ones? These are two totally different situations.
And if these were transgender women, what are the odds of this employee having the ability to violate company policy without losing her job? If this woman had been truly asking transgender women to leave the fitting rooms, we would be hearing about this before now.
I smell a rat.
More specifically, I smell an ambulance chasing organization eager to ride a phony controversy all the way to the bank.
Email Macy’s and send the company your support for standing up for our rights and dignity. And most of all, tell Macy’s to not back down.

What do you expect from a group who believes they have the special right to repeatedly violate the Eighth Commandment, Alvin?
Let’s also not forget that the Liberty Council has never won a trial in court defending someone who’s under the delusion that their religious fundamentalism gives them the special right to refuse to follow civil law and policies.
We also need to never forget that the Liberty Council has been accused by the FBI of smuggling Lisa Miller out of the US and into a compound owned by a LC backer in Guatemala, illegally taking her daughter Isabella from the custody of her other parent, Janet Jenkins!
I find it shocking that the Liberty Counsel is so bent on protecting Macy’s. They’ve repeatedly voiced concern for Macy’s ‘ exposure to ‘liabilities’ arising from potential incidents, yet Macy’s seems completely unconcerned with this (as they should be).
Why has the Liberty Counsel taken it upon themselves to be the staunch defenders of the virtue of Macy’s in the public theater?
Oh, that’s right. They’re sexist, discriminatory bigots hell-bent on eradicating the small steps towards equality that exist in this bigoted country.
Your right to believe in anything is fine…until your rights start to take away other people’s rights. Surely the rights of the transgendered to buy clothes trumps your belief you don’t have to serve them as customers.
Unless you want to risk offending my belief ( that Fundies should all be nakid in public)
Whats to stop us from having stupid beliefs of our own and starting a religion? Nothing!
The irony here is so very thick. Natalie Johnson is a Black woman. I unfortunately remember a time, just 50 years ago when Ms. Johnson would have been prohibited from using the Texas Macy’s dressing rooms herself. And she would have been denied such for many of the same morally repugnant reasons that she now spews towards the teenager whose rights she trampled upon. In fact she would have been prohibited from using the same women’s bathrooms in Texas that I might have used. Ms. Johnson needs to go back to school and learn about the civil rights history that gave her those inalienable rights before she decides to withhold those same rights from others.
That is why she was fired. She is presently suing – via the Liberty Counsel – claiming that her religious beliefs were violated.
The young women went to work at a store she went to work at a store knowing that 1) the Customer is always right.
It is not our fault she did not know she would have to sell stuff to the transgendered why not argue that the transgendered should not be in a ladies changing room?
She is instead arguing Rand Paul’s argument that shop clerks can refuse service to anyone for any reason if she wins this case African Americans can be denied service at any store!
Also her argument is even worse than that the store owners fired her they want to sell to the transgendered if she wins any kookie employee can refuse to serve customers even if the store owner wants to serve the customer.
All they have to do is claim it violates their religious beliefs. In this economy can any store really afford to turn away customers? If religious nuts win this one then they will point to the bible and say ” slaves should obey their Masters ” and refuse service to African Americans and heck all dark people.
What if the Fundies argue next only those who were born again can get served at stores?
Just another frivolous lawsuit. She will have no problem being hired by Walmart. These religious whack jobs don’t seem to understand that they lost the culture war about 40 years ago, so what’s with the rear guard action?
Who funds the Liberty Counsel? I think its time we talk to Spocko again we contact all the advertisers on Fox News just like we did Glen Beck and tell them we plan to boycott them! We boycott whoever funds the Liberty Counsel.
In this economy can big advertisers like McDonald’s, Ford etc afford to lose even 5% of sales for a year? We point out that yes there is an election coming up the Presidential Candidates all of them might make this a big deal for the election.
If Fox and the Right attack them for dropping Fox News advertising you can stop advertising on all Fox and conservative Hate Media easily and force them to end up like Glen Beck losing money for a year before they go under.
So we can be sure Fox when faced with bankruptcy will be quiet they never attacked Glen’s former advertisers.
But if they keep advertising on Fox News then they will lose at least 5% of sales easy.
They face no reprisal if they mess with the Right they do face certain reprisal if they mess with us. FDL high command can get ahold of Spocko he comments here and was our best link to the anti Glen Beck boycott movement.
These religious whack jobs don’t seem to understand that they lost the culture war about 40 years ago, so what’s with the rear guard action?
The GOP can’t win if the election is about jobs and saving people’s homes. They can’t win if OWS is making pro bank GOPers unpopular that excludes Mitt and Newt but helps Ron Paul.
The GOP wins elections when their base is angry and Transgendered people might very well be the GOP’s new abortion wedge issue.
The assholes on FNC and their audience members will defend an employers’ right to fire an employee for virtually any reason, but not when that reason is mistreating a customer who belongs to a group they hate.
Interesting development on this story.
A young woman who went to college with the ex-Macy’s employee has posted a youtube video saying that the young woman had admitted that she “had had homosexual thoughts and feelings” herself -but that she had ‘chosen’ to be straight because of her religious beliefs.
The Youtuber also claims that the ex-Macy’s employee used to harrass the ‘gay community’ and the people from the Gay/Straight Alliance at college.

This is no different than an anti-war (for religious reasons) person goes to work for a defense contractor and then refuses to work on a weapon system.
I had heard about that, Jay. So sad to hear about a young lesbian being taught that her sexual identity is evil.
No doubt the cult indoctrinating her has already begun programming her to reject her racial heritage so she grows up to be a female version of Clarence Thomas, Ken Blackwell, Herman Cain, ad nauseum. The utter fact that she hasn’t been taught about Jim Crow proves that!
