Based upon religious right reaction to the new Obama Administration policy regarding worldwide anti-gay persecution, one has to ask do these so-called followers of Christ have any problem with rape, “honor-killings,” and murder if these actions are done to gays.
It sounds harsh to say that but what other opinion can one gauge after reading the words of religious right talking heads such as
Homosexuality — once widely regarded as a Crime Against Nature — is no more a “fundamental human right” than any other sexual sin.
Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council:
It is startling that President Obama is prepared to throw the full weight and reputation of the United States behind the promotion overseas of the radical ideology of the sexual revolution.
Matt Barber of the Liberty Counsel and radio show host Janet Mefferd:
Mefferd: Here’s a question I had too. In all the stories I was reading yesterday about this directive, in none of them did I see any break down of statistics on the number of homosexuals and transgenders worldwide who are being tortured, persecuted and killed for being gay, have you seen any statistics like that?
Barber: Of course not, it’s nonsense. It’s Orwellian New Speak.
These folks aren’t stupid. They’re willfully ignorant. And sad.
Now in some cases, in between the verbose adjectives about “sexual anarchy” and claims about how the Obama Administration is trying to” impose sexual madness” on other countries, came a spattering of pronouncements about how it was “awful that these things are happening” and how “no one should condone violence.” (LaBarbera’s press release didn’t even have the good taste to do this.)
It seems to me that in all of the huge declarations, the adjectives of disgust should be aimed at the plight of the victims.
But these folks are so concerned with demonizing homosexuality that the victims of anti-gay persecution are merely an afterthought to them.
Victims like:
Nathaniel Cunningham, who was chased out of his home in Jamaica by an anti-gay mob.
Noxolo Nkosana and Noxolo Nogwaza who were both stabbed and raped by groups of men in South Africa. Nkosana lived. Nogwaza was murdered and her face and body was disfigured.
Mahmoud Asgari and Ayaz Marhoni who, in 2005, were publicly executed in Iran for being gay after a trumped-up charge of sexual assault.
And these are just a few of many. People like them, innocent gays and lesbians caught up in hateful cultures, are the people the Obama Administration is seeking to help.
But God forbid that the religious right even acknowledge the plight of these people. God forbid that these holier-than-thou folks be accused of pushing the so-called gay agenda.
The absolute nastiness of these folks is best demonstrated by LaBarbera’s last comment in his press release:
All Americans who love God and respect His wonderful design for mankind should be ashamed of Obama’s and Hillary’s campaign to force a deeply flawed sexual ideology on innocent nations that do NOT want to emulate American decadence.
Someone should tell LaBarbera that you can’t talk about God’s “wonderful design” while intentionally covering up the act of devils.

Using ‘religious right’ and ‘care’ in the same sentence is not allowed!
That would imply that these people are capable of compassion.
“Does the religious right even care about the victims of anti-gay persecution?”
Why would they? They don’t even care about the message of their religion’s founder. More to the point, sexual repression is the foundation of patriarchal authoritarian control, and the religious right has willingly made themselves victims of this repression. If they think so poorly of themselves to have internalized this anti-free, anti-love control mechanism, how much less concern might they have for The Other?
I would posit that they are actually mean, hatefull, intolerant, emotionally arrested bullies pimping fear for a paycheck. Or, I could be wrong.
Thanks for the post, Alvin.
These religious hypocrites are more comical than anything else. Here worship a guy who knocked up another man’s wife and never provided any child support. God is a Dead Beat Dad.
“. . . pimping fear for a paycheck.” Ha. Indeed. Fear is what they know best. Submission to Fear is what made them religious fundamentalists to begin with.
And he sired a Socialist! rotflmao!
Those “innocent” nations that have the death penalty for homosexual activity, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Iran, and Somalia should be bombed back into the stone age (wouldn’t have to go far).
Yes, because as we all know, bombs can solve any problem.
Ah yes, the American Taliban.
Perhaps you’re right. Obamas strongly worded message will probably suffice.
Does the religious right care about the impact of lgbt discrimination? In a word no.
Here is an example from a letter to the ed in my local paper about doing good and kind things for others.
i like what Lenny Bruce said about Christ and Moses coming back, au natural and standing in the back of any church in America during Sunday services.
Not wrong . . . and your description couldn’t be better or more succinctly stated!
Yes, they aren’t stupid. And, NO, they are not willfully ignorant. Let’s call them what they are, lying, hypocritical, jackasses and mother fuckers. If Jesus came back he would be whipping their LYING asses like he did the money-changers in the temple. He never could abide hypocrites. Stop playing nice with these parasitical “christian” shit stains.
“. . . he never states or implies that the saints are to minister and material things, food, clothing or shelter to those without the body.”
No, but Jesus did. The rantings of that crazy ascetic Paul or some obscure Old Testament injunction can always be hauled out to allow True Believers to escape acting on the difficult but essential message of their Savior. That whole love-your-enemies thing just never finds any purchase among Christian fundamentalists–or most Christians for that matter.
Funny, I always thought that “the least of these” meant a whole lot of various folks who were struggling in whatever way implied, usually the widows, the orphans, the prisoners, the lost and lonely….a quite broad gathering.
Thanks for taking care of that.
Sigh. We could only hope for that.

Short answer: No.
They “care” in much the same way that they “care” about women who get unwanted pregnancies or VD: They see those things as the threats they need to ensure sex for anyone but straight men carries heavy penalties.
“The least of these” only applies to the least members of these folks’ club.
It’s “Christian” with a capital C, I’m puzzled by the lower case lettering. Is that lame attempt by “true Christians” to differentiate amongst so-called “fake Christians”?
Personally, I think it’s self-righteous and very pompous to tell people what constitutes as “true Christianity”, especially since “true Christianity” is nothing more but patronizing lip service, someone’s personal interpretation of the Bible and one’s own insistence that it’s the correct, true form of Christianity. You see, it’s the same tactic conservatives use except instead we have folks smiling and saying Jesus loves you, God is love and the rest of that patronizing sugar-coated crap that is so far removed from reality. Good intentions, patronization, smiles, and lip service is pretty much “true Christianity”
You would still have to believe in the concept of original sin, you would have to believe that one religion can be dominant, you would have to believe we need salvation as human beings, and you would have to treat others as being misguided or on the wrong “path” because they do not follow Judo-Christian belief.. See, the later shows nothing but contempt for non-Christians and everybody else. I do not see people treating me like my beliefs aren’t as legitimate or valid because they don’t conform to the Christian perspective as any showing any form of respect.
“Christians”, Conservative or Liberal, seem to treat you as if you don’t know anything about Judo-Christianity, even if someone has read the Bible and (rightfully) go by their own interpretations that it’s toxic, harmful theology and that you simply cannot skim through the more grisly aspects of said theology because YOU don’t like or agree with what it says. If everything is matter of interpretation, then social and religious Conservatives may very well be going by what they believe is the truth.
I guess to these people the sexual harassment and abuse at the hands of my coworkers (including some who claimed to be Christian) is a figment of my imagination.
It was all too real to me.
:/
I suspect that they do care, but in the way that Pontius Pilate cared about Jesus getting a fair trial. Stuff happens but in their minds it’s the fault of someone else, they aren’t responsible for the violence and discrimination. They wash their hands of the responsibility just like he allegedly did.
Do they care? Of course they care.
They care enough to see that it is codified into secular law. They care enough to see that it is exported, expanded, and perpetuated. They care enough to bend and distort facts and science; enough to tell lies and to defame those who dare to live authentic lives honestly and openly even in the face of their persecution.
What they don’t care for are the doctrines of their religion or the words of the one they claim as their savior. Jesus said “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.” (Matthew 5:11)
If Christians are called to live and act in all things as “unto Christ”, how are they able to persecute anyone other than “in His name”? Does this not mean that by their very acts of persecution they cause those they persecute to be blessed? Or am I confused in my efforts to apply logic and reason to that which sheds both logic and reason like water from the back of a duck?
Persecution cannot be called forth from a heart filled with love. Their actions betray what lies in their hearts and by the fruit of their hearts, they are known.
