…weak on the meaning of Christianity.
In the t.v. ad above, which Perry released in Iowa today, he says:
“I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian, but you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school. As President, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion. And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage. Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again.”
In response, Dr. Sharon Groves, Director of HRC’s Religion & Faith program said
Rick Perry is continuing to misrepresent the views of the hundreds of thousands of people of faith in this country who live openly or advocate as allies for the LGBT members of their community. We cannot be in the business of forcing people to choose between who they are, who they love, and their faith. Rick Perry’s rhetoric presumes that you can’t be Christian and supportive of LGBT people. Yet many Christians see in Jesus’ example a call to love and support their LGBT neighbors. Rick Perry is trying to claim religion for political motives but it won’t work. Our faith is too precious to be used as a cynical tool for political ends.

UPDATE: The ad’s not going over well. Not surprising, since insulting our soldiers and defining an entire religion based on your own narrow beliefs isn’t the American way.

And, of course, the last part is flat out wrong as well. Kids are more than free to pray in school. They can do it on their own time. They can pray before the school day starts, during the school day, at lunch, at recess, while waiting for the bus, while on the bus, before an exam, when a pencil breaks, or at any other time if they want to.
Or they cannot, if they do not want to.
The State just can’t force them to pray. I don’t understand how forced prayer equals freedom of religion, yet prayer by choice doesn’t. More irony from the self-described “small government” crowd.
I not only clicked “dislike.” I reported it for its abusive, anti-gay content.
…someone needs to superimpose the “N*****head” boulder and a burning cross into the background of this ad.
Really get the message across that this is hate speech, plain & simple.
Flagged as well, and suggesting others do as well.
Being a Christian in the US these days seems to be all about talking the talk without any of the walking the walk. Actually behaving in a Christian manner is, after all, socialism.
As of 5:15pm Pacific Time: 1143 Thumbs Up, 48,727 Thumbs Down.
Of course there’s prayer in school! Ask any kid who’s taken a test!
Ironic that someone pissing and moaning about free speech would disable the comments on his video.
But then the social conservatives have always had a bit of a “Do as I say, not as I do” streak.
Just ask him if Jesus was white. Ha hahahahahahahahah
That’s why he stood out because he was the great white hope among the brown people/s
Preach it rick
Father Bill used to ask my father, a bigot, what he would say when he got to heaven and faced a Brown Jesus ?
you know when you see this shit and listen to Gingrich talk about putting children to work and the need to cut back government across the board, you have to fear for what is coming. The world has gone nuts, in europe and here in the U.S. Austerity rules the day and the oligarchs love every minute of it. Cut more of the social network and more money flows to them. Start a war and more money flows to them.
Rick Perry is a genuine asshole. So is OilyCleanCoalNukesO’bomber.
They’re just different in their genuineness.
One hopes to coddle the one percent – Federally; the other hopes to continue to coddle the one percent.
May I presume from this that Perry is NOT in the peuw every Sunday?
On edit: Have long been mildly fascinated by the issue of church attendance by prez & prez wannabes.
In my youth (50s) church attendance was a big deal. Prez were filmed every Sunday exiting their church. If I could remember, it may have been JFK’s R.C. connection that stopped all that.
Can’t remember a single time W or O have been reported attending Sunday services as prez. Can anyone else?
I’m pretty sure they got pictures of him kneeling and praying in the first row. Just waiting to be asked, ya know.
What was your father’s response?
Would love to see that link. Don’t go to any trouble finding it though.
Calling all trolls: $100 to the first who can find a link showing Perry in a peuw.
It is obvious that most Christian bigots believe that Jesus can and will transmogrify into whatever skin tone and hair length and texture that pleases them.
By the evidence currently available in the USA, it appears that Jesus has smooth blonde hair, white skin and blue eyes.
I don’t have a link. Just sayin, if I were his campaign mgr, I’d have one. In fact I’d have one for all of em.
It’s a measure of the extreme contempt they hold for the voters that there are no such pics prominently displayed and we have to
askbeg for them.On edit: And as a guess, I think you are much smarter than their campaign managers and not only do they NOT go to church, there prolly isn’t even a photoshopped image of them in church.
As I always say (and always piss off religious among us) hypocrisy is not unique to democracy and religion, it is just heavily concentrated there.
Do you suppose that he really thinks this will appeal to the people of Iowa? What an insult.
And we will have to be very watchful…most of the pew pics I can recall were from funerals….Edit: I meant this for Ecahn…
Of course when they found Obama in a pew it was for REV. Wright and his “God Damn America!”
“As the leading killers of people like the criminals that were crucified by Jesus, I have a deep understand of how God likes to punish people. And by God I mean the Roman Empire. I’m sure that if I was alive during Pontius Pilate days I totally wouldn’t send a political radical to the cross. Especially one who believed in loving others, turning the other cheek when I’m violently attacked and helping the poor. Because as Governor I’ve always been pro-poor, turning the other cheek, forgiveness and believing in hanging out with and helping the least among us. I mean look at my actions!”
Unfortunately, it says “flag as inappropriate”. What’s more appropriate use of computer technology than posting a video of yourself saying outrageously stupid things?
Heh. Wright you are. (Cribbing from spocko’s comment that I read before responding to yours.)
Thanks for the compliment but you got the gift for cutting through the bs.
These guys are nothing if not hypocrites.
I’m still perplexed as how we continue to live in a culture that puts Judo-Christian theology in such a pedestal, that the idea people can live perfectly fine without the Bible/religion is a alienable concept for so many. I’m fed up with Christianity, that includes the so-called “true” and “Liberal” variety. I do not see being Christian/religious has something to commend or evidence of good character.
I think the rewards of his campaign include that he has probably done himself in on any more terms for Gov, finally. He has not made TX proud.
Xtianity has nothing to do with the PTB in the U.S. It is all about ‘chosen peeps’ of OT. No militant Xtain religion refers to any of the teachings of Christ.
Nor do I, although what people choose to believe about their religions tells me a lot about them.
I love the signs that go up around here, especially around elections: “Fast and pray to end abortion.” Right, but we forgive those who abuse children.
Is there something in the water in TX that took them so long to figure it out? Or was it just Molly Ivins untimely death?
I’m particularly taken by Paulbots, bc he thinks abortion is THE most impt issue, meaning he ranks zygotes as higher life forms than peeps already born. Inneresting priority.
He owned apartment houses on both sides of us and had for rent signs up.
Never rented to them colored folk even though the apts. were empty and waited for the right whites.
He had a colored laborer do yard work and never carried money to pay him, so he made him ride his bike 8 miles on Saturday evening to give him a check.
When he died He laid in the hospital dying for six months, the last couple in a coma. I remember on Saturday nights the Tv had colored folks shows playing and the staff was colored and he looked lost. I swear he laid there that long because the devil didn’t want him screwing up his place.
It must be the water bc Molly really warned about W…even wrote books. And she gave us “Gov Good Hair”….she certainly tried.
Don’t get me going on this topic. It infuriates me the way some people think they have the right to tell others what to do with their bodies. I feel like we are going back to the middle ages.
Kids can pray in public schools. They just can’t be led in prayer by the schools.
Was the local news enchanted with him? It’s hard for me to believe that guy could be elected governor anywhere. He makes W look like a genius.
It will appeal to many Iowans attending the GOP caucuses. However, it is too late for Perry to secure those votes in Iowa. They are going to Newt. Primarily because he is seen as the one person who can stop the Mormon.
The key player in Iowa this year is Bob Vander Plaats. Here is a recent quote:
Perry said “pray openly”, which is a mushy phrase that one can interpret just about any way one wants. My opinion is that they can pray openly, as long as they’re not a disruption.
Oy, such a vivid description. Thanks for that.
Have a white neighbor who treated a white farm worker like that. Stomach wrenching.
Emmit, the farm worker, used to have to ride(age roughly 70) on his bicycle with a glass gallon jar to nearest gasoline station to fill it up at his expense to fuel lawn mowers that he was expected to run.
I was too bewildered by what was really going on in those years (ca 1980) to know what to do, but my late husband finally got Emmit into an old folks home, where he eventually died in relative comfort at an even more advanced age.
I remain flabbergasted at Emmit’s treatment to this day, and my inability to immediately see what to do about it. It never occurred to naive me that anyone could treat another human so badly.
Well, he replaced W as Gov, so he was already in office…not much real competition either. Then as the magazine piece wrote, Best little Whore….he really worked the money thing, put lots of his friends in important places….the current press is actually pretty hard on him.
I also never understand why people are not allowed to have strong, opinionated, and passionate beliefs that are from a negative POV when it comes to religion or, oh to hell with it, Christianity, specifically in this country. I’m sick to death of hearing the same apologists over and over and over again. “That’s not true Christianity” or “they’re fake Christians” and the constant patronization in regards to those who perspectives, beliefs, perceptions that do not hold the theology in such high regards. It’s patronizing and showS contempt for people are atheist, agonistic, and who are simply not religious, which isn’t synonymous with the former….AT ALL!
The left, progressives, special interest groups, including those annoying LGBT Christians, have made any negatively held views of Christianity and religion synonymous with bitterness, anti-religion, anti-Christian bigotry because some DARE speak/vent their frustration and anger against their sacred theology. THEY can get past the grisly aspects of their precious belief system with magic spells and “Jesus loves you” because they found their comfort zone but I’m sorry, that is not enough. Even then, you’re still treated as if you’re misguided and don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. It’s like unless you give into what so-called progressives have to say about Christianity, my beliefs and interpretations of Christianity theology isn’t up with so-called “true Christians”, there for invalid and not legitimate. It’s smug and condescending attitude prevalent among religious conservatives. So ultimately, there still a notion and belief that in order to be good people and live fulfilled, spiritual, rich lives, you need to follow Christian thought and belief.
Let me add there are alternatives to finding spirituality, it’s just seldom ever discussed because you would have to branch out of mainstream religions, or Judo-Christian thought, and we can’t have that.
I’m not sure what your point is.
Xitainty is bad? Xtianity is not Xtianity? You can’t criticize religious beliefs? Lefties are confused about religion? Religion is about alternatives that we are not allowed to discuss?
So the Xtian zealots forgive him for his (3d?) marriage to a R.C.?
Cognitive dissonance much.
As a regular attendee of church services, I am deeply offended by idiots like the guy in this video. I can never quite understand what Bible they’re reading from, but it’s not the one I’ve been dealing with since infancy. I don’t walk around banging the drum or thumping a Bible, but I work hard every day to LIVE what I’ve learned and not beat people up who don’t agree with me. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me to post about my beliefs on Facebook, I’d have enough to feed a family of four for a week. What’re these guys doing? Proposing to take away the very charity that we were told from the beginning is the cornerstone of religion. ” ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ How does this crew possibly reconcile their ‘cut the safety net’ position with this line right out of the New Testament? There’s no taking this out of context.
My point is this – beating up on people with a different belief structure that conflicts with your perception of your religion isn’t your job. It’s between each of us and G-d. Co-opting religion as ‘you’re on my side or you’re going to hell’ as part of a political campaign? Dead wrong and you lose credibility with me the minute you start that crap.
…I noticed that convenient “you don’t have to sit in a pew” bit, too, eCah.
I’m not sure, though, whether he’s excusing himself from having to attend church or whether he’s reaching out to the CINO voters (Christian in name only) who sit at home every Sunday watching Fox News.
The complete irony being that he then goes on to accuse a man (Obama) who does attend church, who has been reluctant to support marriage equality because “God is in the mix,” and who was heavily criticized for his church’s pastor of “waging a war against religion.”
If anything, it is the pseudo-religious right itself that is “waging a war” against true Christianity in this country. For them, if you’re not using your Bible as a weapon and raising your children to do the same, you’re not a real Christian…
