I’ll let you in on a little secret.
There are times when I get extremely frustrated with some who fight for lgbtq equality.
The other day, I was reading an excellent piece on Equality Matters (a really good site), which detailed the fact that Fox News was relying on the supposed expertise of religious right “experts” to comment on a situation involving a seven-year-old transgender girl who was allowed in the Girl Scouts.
The piece pinpointed two of the phony experts – Judith Reisman:
Reisman is actually a long-time peddler of anti-LGBT propaganda. She is a full-throated proponent of the claim that gay people are more likely to engage in pedophilia, as well as the myth that the Nazi party was run by gay men. She has railed against the media for failing to acknowledge “that homosexuality is correlated with disorder.” She’s also accused those who support transgender youth of “chemically violating and numbing the nation’s cruelly and unnaturally traumatized youth.”
And the Family Research Council’s Peter Sprigg:
FRC has been labeled as an anti-gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, and Sprigg is a good example of the reasons why. Sprigg is the author of some of FRC’s vilest anti-LGBT propaganda, including a pamphlet that links homosexuality to pedophilia, mental illness, disease, and violence while promoting “ex-gay” therapy. He’s stated that he would prefer to “export” gays and lesbians from the U.S. and condemned anti-bullying initiatives for trying to “indoctrinat[e]” children.
Here is the thing, though.
The piece failed to mention that Reisman is a failed researcher who was given a federal grant of more than $784,000 to study 30 years worth of Playboy magazines. These findings were dismissed as “paranoid pseudoscientific hyperbole.” Or that she wrote a book accusing sex researcher Alfred Kinsey of child abuse. When the Kinsey Institute easily batted down her charges, she sued it for defamation and emotional distress, claiming that it tried to censor her book. Not only was the case dismissed, but it was dismissed with prejudice, which means Reisman could not re-file it.
The piece also failed to mention that Sprigg’s pamphlet in question – The Top Ten Myths About Homosexuality – is filled with distortions, cherry-picked work, and quotes taken out of context created to justify homophobia.
This is not a slam on Equality Matters, but rather just an outcry of frustration on the entire lgbtq movement in general. I think that the reason why it has been so difficult for us to expose the right is because we are not thorough enough.
In dealing with religious right groups, the gay community has shown an appalling degree of laziness in demonstrating why these groups and their phony analysts have no credibility.
It is simply not enough to call them hatemongerers. It is simply not enough to say that they are hate groups.
We have yet to make any consistent effort in educating the public how they rely on lies, junk science, and distortions to make their case. Simply spotlighting their words with no explanation as to the inaccuracy of their statements is totally unacceptable.
How many of us know anything about the 11 researchers who have gone on record over the years complaining about how religious right groups take their work out of context?
How many of us know anything about Paul Cameron and the religious right’s reliance on his discredited research and methods?
There is a serious disconnect here and it’s something which constantly bothers me. The lgbtq community has so much power than we did before. We’ve got magazines. we have webpages. Hell, we even have a television channel.
Would it kill those in charge of gay media to focus at least one iota of attention on what goes into a Family Research Council anti-gay pamphlet or what criteria do these groups use to anoint someone as a “policy expert?”
Instead, we seem to outfox ourselves by assuming that it won’t matter if we put the information out there.
“Oh it won’t do any good,” we tell ourselves. “It won’t change many minds.”
But we don’t know what is going to happen unless we make the effort from the start.
If I said it once, I’ve said it a million times – if the lgbtq community is going to get any headway with combating religious right groups, the labeling of these groups as bigots without any discussion or knowledge of their techniques of deception must stop. The lgbt community must roll up its collective sleeves and do the hard work not just to educate those in the mainstream, but also itself.
But I can’t help but wondering are we ever going to at least make an effort?

Like you, I’ve said it till my head hurts … it’s about media and the LBGT media pundits:
1. Take control of the message. Steal their rhetoric. Accuse. Make it personal.
Our pundits and political orgs should be shouting, “Protect our children. Protect our kindergartners from indoctrination. Protect families. Protect Marriage.”
Whatever his faults, Dan Savage has proven, time and again, that the LBGT community can go into media, take off the gloves of courtesy, politeness, and pulled-punches, and play hardball. The media likes Dan because he gives great TV!
During TV interviews and open forums, we need to ACCUSE. Before they rattle off their own talking points, pose a question that they must address:
“Peter Sprigg, those who you cite as supporters and experts are time and again discovered to be pedophiles, people who protect pedophiles, and involved in every kind of sexual scandal .. why should we listen to you.” All true.
“Mitt Romney, your church is locking away gay youth in private prisons which mentally and physically abuse kids! How can you be a member and financial-supporter of a church, one which happens to considered a cult by many mainstream Christian denominations, that abuses kids?” All true.
Every time Maggie Gallagher faces off with the an LBGT pundit, she should ALWAYS be asked, “Maggie, you had a child out of wedlock, an unwed single Mom, isn’t it hypocritical to be barring others from an institution you thumbed your own nose at?” Anticipate her possible responses/rationales, and then be ready to decapitate her.
“Tony Perkins, you come on these shows and toss your values out there, but what your affiliation with the KKK and other known hate groups?” True.
At any mention of religious, faith and/or our founding father’s values should be met with, “Wait a minute, you’re just plain wrong, and you know it!” And then reel off the list of the mainstream denominations, Christian and Jewish, that are accepting of homosexuality as simply another image of God.
I recently had an exchange with an in-law who was going on about “our Christian nation, the values of the founding fathers, and our laws’ roots in Christianity.”
I was raised Episcopalian, and so I responded by informing him that the homosexual-accepting Episcopal church, which own roots are in the Church of England and English common law, was first established here in the early 1600′s, and that by late 18th C. was the spiritual home to many of our founding fathers and citizens … so if even one thinks it’s OK to let religion factor into our lawmaking, then the Episcopal Church should be a leading force. For the first time, I shut my stupid brother-in-law up.
These statements that should always be made in a face-off:
“Really, given your passion to protect you refer to as so-called traditional marriage, isn’t your ultimate, yet-to-be disclosed, goal to make divorce illegal in the United States? Forcing people to live in unhappy and/or abusive marriages? I mean, it’s only logical …” and, given these peoples’ stated goals, it is only logical.
To whomever a gay pundit is facing off against, this quiet stern statement should be made: “Do you realize you are personally attacking and insulting me and my family?” and then throw their words back at them, revealing the very real personal attack on that specific LBGT pundit.
2. Cut off donations to organizations like HRC until they grow some balls and go on the attack. Until their talking heads start playing true hard-ball instead of “aren’t I so professional and courteous even as the guy sitting across the table from me is, quite literally, making a lethal, personal, attack on me, my family, and my community.”
Nothing I’ve said above is untrue, and by forcing anti-gay pundits or interviewers to go off-script, to put them on the defensive, and to force them answer to the accusation of their personal insults to the man or woman sitting across from them, two important things happen: these people are exposed for who they really are and they spend their media time defending themselves instead of rattling off talking points.
Personally, I return to Dan Savage as a model to follow.
He’s not perfect, but he is a radical sex columnist, a guy who personalizes the insults thrown at the general LBGT community, a guy who lives in open relationship, a guy who creates vulgar definitions of politicians like Santorum … and yet, is welcome time and again by media..
(this is a bit of a rant, I know, but I’ve wanted to get this off my chest for a long time.)
Alvin – you are totally correct in feeling frustrated. It’s true that we probably will not change the minds of those who’ve “drunk the kool-aid,” but the vast majority of America and the world that is watching need to know the truth. We do have an obligation to convince the media to stop using these “experts” who lie about research and science. It will take time, because media is more interested in selling ad time so a hot story or conflict builds an audience. However,if the “experts” they use are continually and publically discredited, at some point they’ll realize the hit they are taking to their own credibility by using these biggots as experts.
Most importantly, we have to publically call out these “experts” for spreading lies in the name of Jesus. WE know that it has little if anything to do with their faith in Christ and much more to do with power and prestigue, but most everyday people just follow an authoritative leader that says the right words. They don’t know these “experts” are totally discredited.
Above everything, LGBT people must bravely tell our stories in public. The truth of who we are makes more of a statement against the lies than anything else. Our visibility has made a huge difference in moving us forward in every field. However, those of us who are Christian and gay must be especially visible. As a gay minister and Baptist to boot, I have made it a personal mission to be as visible as I can be to try to confront the lies. My husband of 22 years feels the same.
We must all do our part.
i’ve sounded the alarm re: Reisman before, and got many earfuls of noise from ppl eager to tear down Kinsey et al.
too thin-skinned for verbal combat and thus lying low. politics intrigue me greatly but i avoid getting oversaturated. not to mention caught up in infighting w/those who peg you as the much-hated Enemy ’cause U agreed with only 95% of what they said
I think part of the reluctance to stoop to their level in rhetoric is partly due to the fact that anti-gay conservatives like play up the “victimhood” angle whenever anyone criticizes them… that they’re under attack by TEH EVIL GAYS!!!
But you’re right. We need to get it through our heads that excess civility is not doing us favors in light of people like Reisman, and EVERYONE needs to understand how much of an evil, crazy person she is. For the people who drink the “vicious attacks from homosexuals” kool-aid, being civil isn’t going to change their minds anyway.
The best defense is a good offense, and it has the benefit of shifting the conversation.
If the conversation is only ever whether or not gays are bad, then the moderate view is somewhere in between.
If the conversation is that there are a lot of awesome LGBT people, and that bigots are bad, then the moderate view is a lot better than it used to be.
“the labeling of these groups as bigots without any discussion or knowledge of their techniques of deception must stop.”
That right there. I know exactly what you mean, but coming from a different area of concern, I guess. It happens in the abortion issue too, people screaming “bigot! woman-hater!” as if that is all that is needed! It’s not! Nobody EVER wants to actually look at what they are ACTUALLY doing to gain support! Hint: It’s not just quoting the bible! Argh. This frustrates me to no end. I mean, the very same politicians who introduced all those federal anti-abortion legislations are the same ones who a few years ago introduced all those anti-sex trafficking legislations — SURPRISE! Guess what they are ACTUALLY using to attack Planned Parenthood? Sex trafficking. And they used it on ACORN too a few years ago. It doesn’t matter if it was obviously fake, people still clutch pearls and go ‘oh dear!’ and they sell the lie to the ignorant masses out there. Feminists who are supposed to be watching the gate, standing guard and alerting us to danger just let this shit slide by. It’s outrageous. Ha, at least one common link is, not surprisingly, the Family Research Council. Jesus, they use OUR ‘science’ against us. Theory of gender performativity anyone? Twist that shit around and it’s a bigot’s best tool of persecution. /rant
