As a person living in a neighboring state where the GOP is doing its best to disenfranchise voters most likely to vote Dem, this news from Tennessee isn’t surprising, but it is disgusting. Why not just bring back the Poll Tax and be done with it? From Think Progress:
Swept up in the craze of preventing widespread voter fraud that doesn’t actually exist, Tennessee Republicans passed a voter identification law this year that they claimed would put an end to fraud and ensure fair elections. Like similar laws in other states, Tennessee’s version has come under scrutiny from voting rights advocates, civil rights groups like the NAACP and ACLU, and even Democratic senators, who oppose the laws because they will disenfranchise poor, elderly, and minority voters who are less likely to have photo IDs.
The state now has evidence that that will be the case. Dorothy Cooper, a 96-year-old Chattanooga resident who says she has voted in every election but one since she became eligible to vote, wanted to ensure she’d have the necessary ID to vote in next year’s elections, when Tennessee’s law goes into effect.
More from the Times Free Press:
That morning, Cooper slipped a rent receipt, a copy of her lease, her voter registration card and her birth certificate into a Manila envelope. Typewritten on the birth certificate was her maiden name, Dorothy Alexander.
“But I didn’t have my marriage certificate,” Cooper said Tuesday afternoon, and that was the reason the clerk said she was denied a free voter ID at the Cherokee Boulevard Driver Service Center.
…”It is department policy that in order to get a photo ID, a citizen must provide documentation that links their name to the documentation that links their name to the document they are using as primary proof of identity,” Qualls said. “In this case, since Ms. Cooper’s birth certificate (her primary proof of identity) and voter registration card were two different names, the examiner was unable to provide the free ID.”
…State Rep. Tommie Brown, D-Chattanooga, said Tuesday that Cooper’s case is an example of how the law “erects barriers” for the elderly and poor people — a disproportionate number of whom are minorities.
“What you do, you suppress the vote,” Brown said. “You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out.”
If you’re in a state that recently fell under GOP control, watch out – these political shenanigans have been at the top of their list to ensure a conservative majority and to make voiceless and powerless the people they have wanted to target since they took office.

Oh boy…
And everyone who throws a temper tantrum and stays home or votes for “third party” to “teach people a lesson” is responsible for this.
Sorry, I don’t buy your guilt making horse shit.
To paraphrase Babs Bush, “the disenfranchisement campaign is working out quite well for the GOP.” Hi Demi.
Hey, Blue.
Bull pucky. I have voted all my life. Where the “f” has it gotten this country? I will not vote for anyone as bad as the current crop of politicians. but I will go stand in the rain with the OWS folks.
Would be a powerful image if someone could take this women to one of the Occupy demonstrations as a living example of what the GOP and oligarchs have in store for the CITIZENS of the country.
Indeed.
And yes, this is yet another ALEC special.
Is Bull Pukey close enough to Horse Shit to owe me a drink?
Rum and coke, perhaps?
With very few exceptions the entire political class is corrupted and is deserving of prison at the least and at the worst the same fate of all tyrants and charlatans.
Take advantage of the downtrodden much? Your opportunistic application of Obot talking points completely ignores the actual problem at hand…
…which is understandable, I guess, as your psuedo-Reaganesque messiah won’t lift a finger to help people like Dorothy Cooper but he will bail out a banker in a heartbeat.
I was drinking water, but, hell, hon, I’m in.
I like that combo with a slice of lemon. Want one?
what does marital status have to do with voting?
Me neither. While I consider this story a sad one, I TIRE OF THE KABUKI, where folks like Durbin pretend they really, really care about voters. I seem to remember a certain Senator ignoring the will of the majority of Americans on issues like FISA.
If the Democrats have anyone to blame for the predicament they are in, it’s themselves. Two percent less evil is no longer acceptable.
Her birth certificate has her maiden name on it. If she took her husband’s name as is traditionally done often than she’d need her marriage liscence to prove she was intitially whatever her maiden name was.
It’s a real pain in the backside to switch things over.
Having been born in raised in Milwaukee, where we had an actual Socialist mayor, and travelled the world since then, I am now stuck in Knoxville, TN for my sins.
Then you deserve what you get when your state experiences what NC is.
If her voter registration card had her married name Cooper which couldn’t be verified from any of the documents she provided or other records extant (hard to believe), then they should have issued her a photo ID and re-registered her under her maiden name Alexander. A simple solution to satisfy the unreasonable new rules, I should think. Still, the whole thing is suspect and very disrespectful to such an elderly citizen. Tennesee is one of the worst of the Southern states, in terms of racism, anti women’s rights, Christian fundamentalism, and conservative backwardness.
I was under the impression that one of the problems at hand was that republican teabaggers are dismantling everything because certain people threw temper tantrums and put them in power. But what do I know, I only fled Arizona screaming because of the insanity that some people seem so willing to inflict as long as it teaches a lesson.
Richard Posner, the federal appeals court judge who approved Indiana’s law and opened the floodgates for these regressive, anti-democratic laws, wrote that it would make it harder for Democrats to get their vote out. But, he said, that wasn’t a problem. In his books, Posner writes that voting isn’t all that important. Issues are too complex for average people to figure out and besides, political participation might interfere with their most important duty — buying stuff. Really.
Obama and the other Democrats (who still controlled both houses) allowed the Republicans to kill ACORN over a phony Youtube video. I fail to see how electing more will stop it next time.
However Obamabots who refuse to hold him accountable have allowed him to embrace Republican policies. Look up “game theory.” There have been several studies in mathematics that prove you are being played…
I hope this becomes a class action voter rights suit. Fuck these people who do this to the citizenry. How hard do they have to make it? That records clerk should be locked up. The inhumanity and insult is beyond compare.
And I suppose you think Pelosi would be wasting millions of dollars defending DOMA. And I’m having trouble seeing how holding Obama accountable involves putting people in power who prevent any progress.
The multi-billionaire Cock Brothers are spending big in the States on union busting and voter suppression among other things. This is an example of a billionaire reaching out to slap a 96 year old woman. These men who have everything go out of their way to steal from and intimidate powerless people. I hate their fucking guts. They will take the food from your baby’s mouth. They will kill you for your last dollar. Anybody who takes their filthy money is a cockroach.
I don’t deserve what I got so far. Obama certainly didn’t get any kind of job done. As a mater of a fact, he actively destroyed the constitution. I won’t vote for someone who killed what Bush couldn’t. So, please tell me who that leaves to cast my vote for?
Oh and by the way, I live in Sacramento. NC isn’t any worse off than we are.
or a 96 year old black lady.
Beg pardon? You mean anybody who takes their filthy money is a cockroach or a 96 year old black lady?
No, I mean that is how they feel about a 96 year old black lady. Sorry, I am sort of tired tonight.
Obama’s got plenty done. Not nearly enough, but he hasn’t been useless. I’m also adding you to the list of people to be held personally responsible when Lawrence v Texas gets overturned because a republican was allowed access to the SCOTUS. And last I checked, California still has domestic partnerships, POAs, and living wills, all of which will be effectively banned under NC’s hate amendment.
Passed a too small stimulus and a Republican health care bill and ???
Do you have an altar in your home or office to your God Obama?
Reply to RainbowPhoenix @ 30
Are you thinking the big O will appoint a liberal judge to the supreme court?
Dream on my friend
actually no. The people DOING it, the Repubs, are responsible for it.
That would require the clerk to proceed on the assumption that Mrs. Cooper was a law-abiding citizen trying to exercise her right to vote, when it’s totally obvious that she’s a lying scammer trying to destroy America. By voting.
Horse hockey!
Your statement deserves no more of a reply than that.
Heh
The Republican franchise KNOWS there is voting fraud. Why? Well, because they, themselves have been caught perpetrating it a number of times.
I guess they are having difficulty finding people willing to phone jam get out the vote efforts.
Nice dodge. Remember what you’re replying to: a comment noting that the Democrats allowed ACORN to be killed. Over a fake video. If the Democrats can’t even defend a core position when the facts are clearly, blatantly on their side, how can we trust them with anything where they’ve already let the corporate-conservative media cloud the waters?
but but but…..if they’d defended ACORN the Republicans would have called them mean names and called them baby killers and deviants. It’s totally unreasonable to expect the Democrats to fight for anything, particularly if it might make their all important job of being re elected harder. They have to keep their powder dry.
Obama himself practiced what you preach against in 2010, i.e, endorsed independent candidates over Democrats.
Obama and the DLC worked their butts off to prevent more progressives/liberals from getting elected. Obama and the DLC put the power of the White House, the DNC, and the Democratic congressional committees behind Blue Dogs, Republicans and Independents over progressives/liberals and real Democrats. Some, but not all, examples:
Blue Dog Blanche Lincoln over progressive Democrat Lt. Governor Bill Halter.
Republican-turned-Independent Arlen Specter over progressive Democrat Joe Sestak.
Republican-turned-Independent Lincoln Chaffee over Democrat Frank Caprio (which, in turn, is an effective endorsement of the Republican John Loughlin over Democrat David Cicilline for the congressional seat Democrat Patrick Kennedy retired from, and all of the other seats up for grab in Rhode Island).
Republican-turned-Independent Charlie Crist over liberal Democrat Kendrick Meek.
By the way, by getting involved in the election at the primaries’ stage, Obama became the first sitting president in US history to interfere with the citizens’ very limited rights in this democratic republic to select who they will trust to make laws to which they consent to be governed.
Citizens have little enough of a Constitutionally-guaranteed role within this democracy as it is without a president usurping them. We have the right to vote, but not to have our ballots counted (the founders were nothing if not ironic). But to have a president enter into our choices at the most basic level, in state primaries, I think is an abuse of the process.
Just before the 2010 midterms, Obama broadcast that he would be doing more of the same, more caving by him and Democrats to Republicans, even if Democrats remained the majority and in control of both Houses of Congress:
Why would Obama do that if not to discourage already angry and discouraged Democratic voters from showing up to vote?
Democrats lost seats in the 2010 midterms because of Obama’s and Democrats failure to do what Democratic voters put them in office for in 2008. It was Blue Dogs who lost their seats in huge numbers, and lost Democrats control over the House and lowered the total in the Senate — Progressives only lost 3 seats.
Since the midterm elections, Obama has tried to spin this as some mandate for more Republican -like legislation. More caving. Like Obama’s extending Bush’s tax cuts that actually raised taxes on the poor. And the elimination of payroll taxes sets Social Security up for collapse.
After decades of voting for the lesser of two evils (Democrats), I’ve now come up with a strategy for the longer haul: I’m voting out incumbent Democrats and Republicans and giving my vote only to candidates who have as first on their agenda getting money out of politics (publicly funded campaigns) and personhood status removed from corporations. We may lose some incumbent Democratic offices to Republicans, but when Obama and Democrats see their election success or failure as a mandate for more Republican policies, it’s not really any great loss. As I said, I’m taking the longer view, clearing out the dead wood to make room for real populist candidates as they arrive on the scene.
So just ignore everything else. You clearly have no interest in actually looking at what’s happened in three years because you didn’t get everything you want right away.
No. I just know the difference between accountability and erecting even more barriers to progress.
You’ll have to show me where I said that I expected liberal appointments. Moderates who respect precedent are much better than the Scalia clones we’ve been promised by the republicans.
So you have no arguments to defend your temper tantrums. Good to know.
So that translates to putting the republicans back in power so they can do even more damage, as we’re observing throughout the bible belt?
And how does that translate to putting more republicans in power?
The people doing it and the people who gave them that power by throwing a temper tantrum.
All this excitement because some woman wanted a voter’s registration card issued in a different name from the one that appeared on her birth certificate, and couldn’t produce a document that showed how she legally changed her name? What’s so difficult? Every married woman who’s ever changed her name has been through this drill a dozen times.
Honestly, if this is the worst tragedy that supposedly can result from the Republican plot to disenfranchise voters via a voter registration bill, I don’t see the problem.
X2
that was quite a troll spanking. nicely done.
Ummmm…why is everyone so hot to cooperate in the sham of voting anyhow? To play their rigged game ?
Why not monkey wrench the whole thing ? Both the Republican and the Democratic parties want to rig the elections. They are already rigged. In a hundred ways.
Sabotage voting booths..pour crazy glue in the machines..Demonstrate outside as close as you can get to the voting places.
The Republicans obviously want anarchy..as they like their threats of shutting down the government so much. So give them their anarchy.
Make them so afraid of the ‘Dont Vote’ domestic Terrorists that they have to station troops around the voting places and x-ray scan or pat down each voter.
Even the very idea that this might happen will throw the government into such a frenzy of insane paranoia. Especially when no one can be found to be organizing this. It would be like a secret underground movement.
Dont vote ..revolt.
s/?
Staying home last year worked out so well for all of us. You really showed those Dems and that Obama guy by letting the tea party hijack the House of Representatives and a bunch of governors mansions. They clearly got the message. Maybe next year, everyone can stay home again, so we can have GOP majorities, with significant numbers of tea partiers, in both houses, PLUS a GOP President. If you want to see Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida and Maine writ large, by all means, abstain a year from now. This isn’t a scare tactic; we have all seen what Scott Walker, Jon Kasich and Rick Scott have been able to get away with in less than 1 year.
If we all want a third party, or want to start primarying fake Dems in favor of Alan Grayson-type progressive candidates, then we need to organize now and set our sights on 2014 and 2016. In the meantime, helping the GOP take over our country again (and giving the tea party politicians even more of an opportunity to make even more of a mess than they already have) isn’t going to help anyone’s cause
Since when is trolling synonymous with disagreement?
No, this falls to the Dems and 0Bama. They new of the shenanigans on voting and what did they do about it when they won major control and had a real mandate? Jack Shit. Barry was too busy sizing his lips to fit on the oligarchs teat to much care about the Democratic PArty or Democracy in the USA. The Dem party leadersheep were too busy trying to figure out how to to actually not perform for the people in light of the commanding majorities they had after the 2008 elections. Guess what, they suceeded! Dumb fucks.
BS> We are not obligated to vote for any one party. If the Democrats actually fulfilled their promises and acted like Democrats, they wouldn’t have half the messes they do. I vote for the candidate I find best be he or she a Green, an Independent, a Democrat, or whatever.
So you decided to throw a temper tantrum and put people in power who proceeded to start dismantling everything. Real smart.
You can vote for whoever you want, but when you vote for someone who has no chance of actually winning, you relinquish your right to complain about that elections consequences.
