There are times that the National Organization for Marriage is so anti-gay that it burns, such as the post on its blog regarding the birth of Congressman Jared Polis’s newborn son:
A simple congratulations would have been nice. Or, since the organization does not agree with same-sex couples raising children (or existing in dignity), maybe a little silence would have been in order.
We can all predict what’s going to happen next. Should NOM catch any flack from this, the organization will quickly whine about how it’s being “persecuted,” leaving many of us to wonder what ever happened to the good old days when “Christians” could make tasteless comments about newborns without reprisal.
Seems to me that a so-called moral organization shouldn’t sound like bullies on the playground. That’s what NOM comes across as here – bullies on a playground poking fun at a little boy for living in a same-sex household:
“You don’t have a mother! You don’t have a mother!”
Hat tip to Joe Jervis.

I think that NOM’s supporters largely fall into two categories. One category is comprised of the haters. These are the people who resent our presence and want us to just go away. They want the government to marginalize us to such a degree that we run back to the closet. They think that same-sex sexual activity should be illegal and that we deserve no legal protections at all.
The other category is comprised of people who just aren’t comfortable with same-sex couples getting married. They are relatively tolerant, in that they think we deserve some legal protections. They think that they believe in equality, though they are convinced that heterosexuality is superior and believe that superiority should be codified in some way.
I think that the former group is so batshit crazy that they will never support us in anyway, but the latter is persuadable. And what has happened, with all of our recent victories, is that NOM is beginning to lose the latter group. So to keep the donations coming in, they need to fire up the haters. That, I think, is why we see such behavior here. Their rhetoric will continue to be nasty and bizarre in the future.
The Wikipedia entry for Rep. Polis describes his partner, Marlon Reis, as his “life partner.” I though they had actually married, but cannot find any information.
The real content of NOM’s blog post is in the first four words:
“We have no clue”
They’re really upset that they haven’t already been named a hate group.
I think “psychodrew” has hit the nail on the head. They know they’re fighting a losing battle and it’s time for them to start fighting dirty. As their more “tolerant” supporters see how disgusting NOM’s tactics become (attacking newborn babies), they’ll stop giving them money and they’ll eventually fall.
When the Republicans boo a gay solider, attacking newborns is not a far stretch for them.
They’re in Colorado, which doesn’t have marriage equality. So, unless they were married somewhere else–and Colorado wouldn’t recognize it anyway–the Wikipedia entry is unsurprising.
