I swear to god, this is the actual headline in the WaPo:
Obama says he’s ‘still working’ on view of gay marriage; says gay friends influence thinking
Obama’s comments come one year after he told liberal bloggers that his views on gay marriage were “evolving.” He supports civil unions, but has thus far not backed same-sex marriage…Obama says his evolving views are influenced by friends, family and children of gay couples he knows who are thriving.
I think we can dispense with this idiotic tap dance, Mr. President. These kinds of statements are pitiful. It sounds like our POTUS is straining so hard on the matter that you want to hand him a bottle of Metamucil to ease the blockage.
Look, we know you support marriage equality already and are holding off on stating the obvious (after all, those legal marriages in six states are thriving just fine) because some few voters out there haven’t a clue where you stand and will make their selection in the voting booth based on your marriage equality position.
Who in god’s name is he pandering to with this nonsense?

Well, when it comes to evolution: some folks are attuned to your more up-to-date postulates regarding rate of change, like ”punctuated equilibrium,” for example.
Obama evidently adheres more to the (much, much!) older model of macroevolutionist gradualism.
As in: change so s-l-o-w, you couldn’t see it: not even if you looked at a series of a hundred photos, each having been shot after a lapse of…oh, eight years or so.
’Course, your Metamucil analogy has certain advantages. Such as: the fact you don’t have to be Stephen Jay Gould or Richard Dawkins (or one of their grad-student assistants) to ”get” the in-jokes. In addition, there’s the advantage of one being much more amusing than the other…
He does begin his evolutionary journey at a distinct disadvantage…he is straight!
That’s almost as good as “I didn’t inhale”, isn’t it?
But evolution is slow! You can’t ask Barack Obama to move up to, say, the Cenozoic Era. He has to evolve.
I don’t KNOW that he supports equality???!!!!
I wasn’t around in the when he was for it before and I have seen nothing that says he supports marriage for all.
He just doesn’t.
This is off topic but damn! I wonder what the judge will do?
That interview with the safe George Stephanopoulos was awful. I think he nows he’s going to lose. He’s pretending his AJA is still alive and kicking.
President Pragmatism sounds like a man who is chasing a new bff, while keeping the old bff on a string just in case it doesn’t work out. And he’s completely transparent. He’s evolving is equivocating. He only views it as a chit he might use somehow for his own personal gain.
I think “evolving” is simply a cover. I think he’s for equality, but nationally that’s not the popular political stance to have. So he instead claims to be “evolving”. He’s not evolving, he’s waiting for the country to evolve.
He’s trying to have it both ways. He’s duplicitous, just like every other politician. He’s for equality only inasmuch as he and his handlers see it as beneficial to him and his career. Want evidence? Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. If CiC Truman could unilaterally order racial integration, then CiC Obama could do the same for LGBT Americans. As it is, the T Americans got left behind in that deal so don’t expect me to cheer for Mr. Obama or even give him the benefit of the doubt anymore. That ship has sailed. Without me.
If he wins reelection, he’ll tell us whether he’s evolved sufficiently to support us when he sees how many of us voted for him a second time around. Unfortunately, I imagine that a fair number of us will still be “evolving” on Barack Obama.
Evolve? I’d be happy if he’d just grow a pair.
I believe the flaw in our thinking about this is that when Obama said that he was involving it was the presidential “I” (kind of like the royal “we”). The issue isn’t so much his personal evolution, but the political evolution of the top levels of the administration’s White House and campaign operations. The President may be a problem here, but it’s probably others in the operation that are the bigger problems.
Really, is there anyone left besides Obama’s personal loyalists who cares what a right wing hustler like Obama says or thinks or if he evolves or not.
What’s important is the radicalization of a whole generation of younger GLBT militants and activists, pissed off by the Obama 2008 generated defeats of same sex marriage in California, Florida and Arizona. They took to the streets in nationwide demonstrations that peaked with the 2009 200,000 strong March on Washington.
What really matters is the radicalization of the new generations of union activists, youth and students enraged by Obama’s attacks on the UAW and the copycat attacks by scabs like Democrats Brown (CA) California and Cuomo (NY) and Republicans like Walker (IN) and Scott (FL). At Madison and in the anti-government, anti-Wall Street demonstrations they’re flexing their muscle, organizing and talking without letup about their social deal breaker, the general strike.
Obama and the Democrats betrayed everyone but the banksters and the military industrial complex, and were summarily abandoned by 30 million of those who voted for Obama in 2010, many just walking away and many switching parties.
Now we’re in for more election hoopla and hopey/changey/evolvey. But with the WH, Congress and the courts firmly in the hands of right wing Democrats and Republicans not much is going to change except the masks they put on.
Whoever wins in 2012 will continue to be our enemy, trying to slow down our fight for equality, trying to bust unions and still sending American Gis to kill civilians and be killed fighting for oil companies.
Whichever rightwing hustler wins in November 2012 the left – activists in the GLBT, environmental, antiwar, unions and socialist movements will go into opposition.
When pigs fly.
Well, to be fair: evolution is a generational process.
I disagree. Not-so-closeted Republican that he seems to be, Obama opposes equality: he doesn’t dare come out and say so openly.
Simply NOT true. There was no law that segregated the services, it was simply standard practice whereas DADT was enforced by law. And no need to explain T exclusion from me, I am a trans veteran. Trans exclusion IS something he could something about, but he won’t because he really doesn’t need to give conservatives more ammunition to use against him. I will agree with you on one thing: He is a politician. And not as brave as I had hoped when I voted for him.
He needs to EVOLVE ALREADY! Maybe some others will join him. While I think it’s true that he can’t afford to alienate any voters he might win some over if he grows a pair.
It sounds like our POTUS is straining so hard on the matter that you want to hand him a bottle of Metamucil to ease the blockage.
Pam, you forgot the keyboard protection icon, lol
