My friends at Facing South pointed me to this garbage, another case of professional hate-mongering Dominionists getting involved in in the business of the Wake County School Board, in this case there’s a flier that’s not so subtly using well-worn fear and smear tactics. An investigation is under way by the Board of Elections. These bible-beaters want to ensure precious white children are not exposed to diversity.
The flier, which circulated at the school board’s meeting last week and was posted to the candidates’ Facebook pages on Monday, shows photos of national NAACP President Ben Jealous and state NAACP President Rev. William Barber, including a photo of Barber being arrested last year while protesting the end of the school system’s long-standing policy of busing for socioeconomic diversity policy.
Under the heading “INDOCTRINATION,” the flier calls candidates Susan Evans, Kevin Hill, Christine Kushner, Jim Martin and Keith Sutton “radicals” and “liberal allies” of Jealous and Barber and accuses them of supporting forced busing, social engineering and quota systems in student assignment.
The School Board has a nationally recognized diversity plan in place. But the fundies came out to vote in an election that saw a right wing takeover of the board based on a tiny turnout. Reality-based voters obviously didn’t think that they needed to vote. Who’s sorry now? These fundies again, are trying to go stealth about what they really believe. Facing South’s Chris Kromm:
As of this writing, officials had yet to identify the source of fliers. But Facing South has found they may be linked to fundamentalist activists who believe Christians should completely abandon public schools.
The distinctive header at the top of the Wake County flier is identical to the name and images used by “IndoctriNation: Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity in America,” a documentary film scheduled to be released in October 2011.
Although the film isn’t finished, the trailer on a promotional website features a parade of speakers who openly call public schools — all public schools — variously a “pagan society” and “criminal enterprise” that are “stealing our children” and “should be ground to a halt.”
