Hailing all locksmiths – help out this equal opportunity bigot: anti-gay NC pastor Dr. Johnny Hunter of Cliffdale Community College holds up 2 locks (representing women) then 2 keys (representing men), then bangs each set together to prove God meant that they were not designed for each other – to instruct us that because of biology (and locksmithery) LGBT people shouldn’t be able to get married.
This is the kind of intelligence our Republicans in the NC General Assembly listens to as they near debate on a marriage amendment. Via EqualityNC, who had people there to witness this embarrassment – the pro-amendment forces think this is the best case they can make for a marriage amendment? Watch and keep your jaw off of the table.
Hunter: “You see…two locks…(pulls them out of his pocket, bangs them together) cannot open each other. (Bangs them together again) They don’t work together (continues banging)…they weren’t designed to work together. In fact, even if you had two keys (pulls those out of his pocket)…two keys don’t work together. What it takes to consummate a marriage is a lock and a key. (Holds up a lock and a key).”
Oh, and Hunter wasn’t the only one who preached hate at this legislative presser. Watch the bigotry of the equally heinous blather emitting from the pie hole of Donald Q. Fozard, who shepherds the flock over at Durham’s Mount Zion Christian Church. He lives less than a mile from me in a ridiculous McMansion that has near the front door — I sh*t you not — a life-size white statue of a man and woman in embrace representing man-woman marriage.
Fozard stood up to share the wisdom that “every major empire that ever came to naught was because homosexuality was pushed.” He believes that civil rights should be up for a vote, using the logic that gay folks only represent 3% of the population so who gives a flip whether they have any civil rights. Yes, what a man of God. Protect your keyboards again, please.
A classic Fozard moment of delusional bigotry: “You take 20 male couples and put them on an island and give them all the things they need to survive for 100 years. You take 20 female couples and put them on an island give them all the things they need to survive for 100 years. You take 20 heterosexual couples and put them on an island and come back in 100 years – the male island will be dead (slams fist on the podium). The female island will be dead (slams fist on the podium), but the island that has a man and a woman on it will have children running around all over the place.”
Funny Fozard didn’t mention any scenario where opposite-sex couples who are infertile spend 100 years on an island. That one would be dead (my fist on the podium) as well. What on earth does this have to do with marriage then? Nothing. #FAIL. The fact that any reality-based argument for passing an amendment that restricts civil rights is based on garbage — foul stinking flaming garbage like this — is a disgrace.
Oh by the way, this is an old saw for Fozard, who clearly lacks any originality. I blogged about this man way back in October 2009 where he said the exact same thing (“Pastor Donald “Faggot!” Fozard and Herald-Sun columnist rail about Council’s marriage equality vote“). At that time he was foaming at the mouth because Durham’s City Council unanimously passed a resolution supporting marriage equality.
Speaker Thom Tillis (Thom.Tillis@ncleg.net, @thomtillis) – is this caustic bigotry what you wish to promote as your legislative legacy?
It’s a sad day for North Carolina, and for all of the taxpayers who care more about jobs in this economy than bible-beating bigots who think public policy should be decided based on their narrow religious views.
Equality NC needs your help to beat this back, and bring sense to the minds of the fair-minded legislators who are on the fence about this amendment. There will be a rally at the Gen Assembly next week, and there will be vigils held, including one at Duke Chapel on the 12th.
This is about LGBT North Carolinians’ very identities. We are productive citizens of this state and we will NOT be demonized. Please, make your gift now to help us show that we will NOT be thrown under the bus.
On Friday we told you about last week’s disgusting press conference held by Representative Paul Stam and Representative Dale Folwell, during which Stam once again trotted out polygamy and incest as reasons to ban same-sex marriage. As anyone who follows our work knows, Stam is no stranger to us, and sadly, neither are his antics.

Pastor Johnny Hunter has also been a long-time activist against choice, as well.
I was just perusing the Rules For Use Of State Legislative Building and found this:
This seems to indicate in rather final terms who can use the legislative building for meetings and press conferences. Perhaps someone could ask the Chair of the General Assembly who gave the Reverends Hunter and Fozard permission to hold a press conference that clearly violates the rules of the Legislative Services Commission.
Sorry, I had it formatted a little better than that huge blob of words that it became and evidently I cannot post links.
I’ll try again. The information came from http://www.ncleg.net/NCGAInfo/buildingrules.html
where there are professional homophobes, it goes without saying that the womb-controlling goes hand in hand.
Representative Dale Folwell hosted the crazy press conference. If a member hosts a press conference, they can bring in folks to speak.
I actually think it was good to expose this idiocy on camera.
Like Pam said, make this viral.
By this guy’s logic we could legalize polygamy. You don’t need 20 couples. Using the same number of people you could use 4 men and 36 women on the island and probably end up with more children after 100 years than the 20 couples (with the understanding that all of them are fertile and engage in PIV sex). In his example of 20 het couples, there is nothing in that scenarios that says they couldn’t all be polyamorous. What if they are all bisexual with everyone having sex with everyone else? This could still produce the children he expects to be there after 100 years. All his scenario really points to is that a monosex culture can’t survive. Good thing no one is advocating for that.
Of course none of these scenarios have anything to do with marriage. In none of these situations is there any requirement for any kind of legally bonded coupling.
This is what burns me about conservative blacks like Fozard — arrogant in his supposed equality, all he has to do is have his fancy Caddy/Lexus/BMW break down in a lonely country road, or be on the wrong part of town, he’d be just another ni**er a gang of racist whites would have “fun” with.
I’d like to remind that cabal of bigots arrayed there that if it wasn’t for a gay black man by the name of Bayard Rustin, NONE of them would’ve been allowed in the damn building except as janitors or servants!
Not to mention that chances are extremely good that if you put those 20 heterosexual couples on the island, after 100 years, roughly 3- 5% of the population would be LGBT. We come mostly from heterosexual couples – and studies show that with male homosexuality, at least, the more sons a woman has, the more likely they are to be gay. So a repopulation exercise with a small group of women is likely to produce a bunch of gay people.
And of course, the very concept is flawed. No gay people pretend we aren’t and don’t need to be a part of the broader society. Putting people on an island with “everything they need to survive for 100 years” includes people to have children with so that there are subsequent generations.
Put 10 gay couples and 10 lesbian couples on one of those islands, knowing they are stuck for life, and chances are pretty good that there will be subsequent generations, with a lot of coparenting going on. And, in the short term, at least, it probably won’t involve runaway overbreeding. Of course, several generations later, the population will be largely heterosexual, but with pretty relaxed ideas about bisexuality and homosexuality when they do crop up.
More flawed than you know…20 couples, however heterosexual they may be, do not make a viable breeding population. That island is also DEAD, it just may take a little longer.
I agree that the gene pool is small. 100 years, though? Nah. That’s only a few generations. Far too few to wipe them out. The experiment specifically said 100 years.
Resisting the temptation to make inbreeding joke at the expense of Republicans or selected Red States that have been around more then 100 years as evidence.
It never surprises me when what are smilingly called Christian leaders explain human sexuality and relationships in terms of inanimate objects. Hunter is a prime example; Rick Santorum’s recent lecture on napkins is another. It reveals volumes about them and their attitude to their followers (who arguably are inanimate objects, i.e. robots with no evident wills or minds of their own).
What is it with homophobic black ministers who sell out to the oil industry? Like Carpetbagger Jackson, the Reverend Johnny Hunter has ties to the industry through Trent Franks,,,
It absolutely amazes me, when I view these videoclips, how these “people” ever made anything of themselves AFTER they were freed! FORTUNATELY, a small minority of pastors act thi way, but like the squeaky wheel, they get the visual ‘grease’! Really, the only thing a real Christian can do is pray for these nutjobs and keep their numbers small and their gathering small in number.
There is no doubt in my mind why the GLBT Community, countrywide and worldwide, have made the tremendous strides they have, when one observes what our opposition sounds and acts like. We owe the up-tighty, righty-whities, and blaaaacks a great amount of thanks for really expanding our rights and opportunities through their blatant hypocrisy. Thank you, Pope Johnny!

This is disgraceful! I am appalled at the arguments used for this bill – I DO NOT define my relationship or status in the “amount or type of sex I have with my boyfriend” why should anyone else!!!
I would like to find where this person lives and send him a HUGE LOAD of keys and locks!! Just because a key is able to fit in a lock does not mean it is able to open the door to any happiness! DO NOT try to define mine and I will not define yours!!!!!
Someone should put these morons on an island for a 100 years. I bet that when you came back, the only thing left would be stupidity.
