Protect your keyboards. In his latest fundraising email, NOM’s Brian Brown is actually pitching an anti-equality constitutional amendment for New York. This will be a test of the gullibility of NOM’s donors because the plan is utterly ridiculous. An amendment to the New York State Constitution requires the approval of two consecutive legislatures. (see Article XIX). Here’s the plan:
We’re putting together a 4-year campaign strategy that will reverse same-sex marriage in New York. We’ll have many more details, and ways for you to get involved, in the days ahead but the overall plan will have three phases:
PHASE 1:
Elect pro-marriage majorities next November that will approve a marriage amendment in both the Assembly and Senate during the 2013 legislative session.
PHASE 2:
Protect pro-marriage candidates in the 2014 elections, so that the amendment can receive final legislative approval in the 2015 legislative session.
PHASE 3:
Successfully pass the ballot measure when it goes before voters in November 2015.
Recall that the Assembly passed the Marriage Equality Act by a vote of 80-63 and the Senate passed it by a vote of 33-29. To accomplish this mean-spirited plan, NOM would have to replace at least 18 pro-equality Assembly members and 3 pro-equality Senators (incumbents all) with anti-equality challengers, get a majority of both chambers to approve a proposed amendment, maintain the anti-equality majorities through another election, then get the majority of both chambers to vote anti-equality for a second time.
Then the question would go to the voters, who already overwhelmingly support marriage equality.
No wonder Brian Brown literally sat and cried when the Senate passed the Marriage Equality Act. With everyone from Roman Catholic majorities to ultra-conservative David Frum supporting marriage equality, Mr. Brown must be keenly aware that his anti-gay meal ticket is just about punched out.

Why can’t you let Mr. Brown lament the end of his gravy train with dignity?*Snark
Let BB defend marriage by working on ending divorce and I might give him some attention.
Poor baby.
I bet you…that somewhere in his plan it says “please send money”.
That is what the Family Institute of Connecticut did when they failed to stop the anti-discrimination bill. They said to send money to elect “pro family” legislators.
but of course!this was near the bottom of the email:
It will be easier for us to repeal DOMA via US Congressthan it will be for NOM to repeal NY’s marriage equality.
But they know that.
They are lying grifters and just fleecing gullible people for money. They lie to their “friends” as easily as they do anyone.
Note, in contrast, how thoughtfully our community is considering the question of whether to repeal Prop 8 at the ballot in 2012.
Brian makes nearly half a million a yearI’d be weeping too if I lost that kind of income. Now, how do we put them out of business? One thing I hope will happen: gays and lesbians who marry should work hard at their marriages. Let the world see we can do it right. Let our marriages be more solid than straight marriages, about half of which end in divorce. So don’t get married unless you’re really serious and committed. As people see that we can live our lives as “solid citizens” and as we grow more visible, it will be harder for people to vote against our rights.
A More Realistic Plan Than Brian’s1. Make contact with the super-secret underground Space Zombie Nazis
2. Convert the Zombies to Christianity and then have them bite, infect and kill the entire New York Legislature and the Governor
3. Wait til the State Government rise from the dead as Zombies
4. Tell them to pass a marriage amendment.
Marriage in MAWow, NOM has had EIGHT years to reverse marriage equality in Massachusetts. What was NOM’s plan of attack for that, and why hasn’t it succeeded?
I tell ya what, Mr. Brown; when your plan of the takeover of NY fails, will you “go gently into that good night”? (doubtful)
transparency? Is NOM serious? give a gift for transparency? How about NOM starts with transparency and tell us who foots NOM’s bill.
I harbor no illusions – NOM will not do that. NOM doesn’t actually believe in transparency.
I think they *still* haven’t released the namesof donors to their campaign to strip a class of Mainers of their civil equality.
Bryan Brown’s Strategy
Phase 4: ??????
Phase 5: PROFIT!
I think it’s more like this:
Why I Love NOMThis is one of the reasons I love organizations like NOM. Because they are fundamentally corrupt, a large part of the bigot dollar gets siphoned off into the grifters’ pockets instead of actually being used against us.
This corruption is not so different from that of the present-day HRC, for example, but there is a difference in how their groups evolve and our groups evolve.
Their groups are corrupt right from the very start, founded by conmen. Ours start off as idealistic grassroots groups that only become corrupt later. Then, as we become disgusted with the corruption, we start up new grassroots groups, hopefully to replace the old ones. A lot of money is certainly wasted in the meantime, but at least our cause is not championed by shysters from start to finish.
Any chance this is just cover? It’s pretty clear that their sources of money are exceptionally shady. I think it’s been made clear enough that they don’t get the bulk of their money from the little people in those $50 increments (though every little bit helps, I’m sure.)
But if they don’t issue this kind of statement, transparently pointless as it is, can they keep covering up for the Big Bucks contributors?
And really, I still don’t get it. I get the bigotry – I can understand whipping up people to hate us, and even to vote against us. But I have a really hard time understanding anyone giving money, especially Big Money, for this
And honestly, that even includes the Church. They’ve already thrown us out, it’s not like our getting married makes us any less the Whores of Babylon to these people.
Where are the millions actually coming from, and why?
Don’t be so sure that Brown’s and Gallagher’s meal tickets are going away anytime soon.
Even if the well of new anti-marriage equality laws and amendments dries up Maggie and Brian will be up to their eyeballs in gravy for AT LEAST the next twenty-five years as they switch over to defense mode, defending against challenges to the anti-marriage laws in 40+ states and defending against challenges to the amendments in 30+ states. Unless we get a favorable and universal ruling from SCOTUS in the next 25 years (which is far from certain) NOM and its hoard of demons will be in business for the duration. Yes, some of their funding will dry up as the masses become uninterested in wasting their money on such a fight but since 90%+ of NOM’s funding comes from less than ten sources (who will NEVER give up) they will be well funded for years to come.
Hear, hear!
For example, GLAAD.
Hopefully HRC will suffer GLAAD’s fate sooner than later.
The Koch BrothersI wouldn’t mind betting that the Koch brothers are one of the main sources of NOM’s funding.
Regarding polgyamy, an heterosexual phenomenon. Maggie Gallagher-Srivastava and Brian Brown need to read the old testament. Polygamy was never condemned by their god, nor was killing one’s wife (stoning her to death) for adultery.
I wonder if they’ve taken a closer look at the largest monotheistic cult, Islam. Polygamy is allowed, up to four wives at a time, reserved only for heterosexuals.
What is NOM doing about serial adulterers of the Gingrich, Giuliani, Vitter ilk I wonder? Obviously, not harmful to children. What about unwed mothers. Srivastava knows more about that than the rest of us having been one herself.
I actually hope they fleece the haters for every dime they’ve got!
And then waste it on more campaigns like the one in New York.
Perhaps, but as NOM loses credibilityby pushing such crazy ideas as this amendment, the likelihood increases that even some of those major funding sources will find other priorities for their money. I doubt that haters like to waste their money an more than anyone else.
That said, NOM isn’t going away before the 2012 election, and if NOM gets anti-equality amendments passed in MN and NC, that may provide the diversion of attention away from their devastating NY loss needed to give Brown’s career a reprieve.
And the best part of NOM’s plan:The whole enterprise will be powered by a perpetual motion machine.
Except they will use it against usIn NC, MN and elsewhere. As well as to live an oppulent lifestyle off hate.
ha ha ha ZOMBIESwe will have to ‘awaken’ Bela Lugosi, from his deep sleep since 1956, only HE can command the Zombies, lol. His early talkie “White Zombie” 1932, holds up quite well, lol.
I don’t know that Koch Bros care about social issues. Marriage equality passing or failing makes no difference to their corporate bottom line.
They might toss a few bucks at electoral race if they saw value, like overthrowing Gov John Lynch of NH. But really? They can hire a better front group than these ragtags losers. Someone like Rove.
I think they *still* haven’t released the namesNo, they haven’t, and they are continuing to fight that the law that requires them to do so is unconstitutional.
