Do you find that this makes a compelling argument for marriage equality? Will it change votes?

New Yorkers United for Marriage today released its second statewide television ad as part of the coalition’s campaign to pass legislation that would allow gay and lesbian couples to marry in New York State.

The ad features Nassau County couple Paul and Iris Blumenthal, who want to see their son, Jonathan, say “I do.”

“Our youngest son is gay and has been in a committed relationship for 11 years.” Iris Blumenthal says in the ad. “They’re a wonderful couple, they’re a caring couple. It would give us such great joy to walk them down the aisle and see them get married.”

Iris Blumenthal: We’ve been married for 47 years and have 2 sons. Our older son is straight and has been married for 15 years. Our youngest son is gay and has been in a committed relationship for 11 years.  A good marriage is thinking about and caring for the other person even more than you care about yourself and we’ve seen this in Jonathan and Eric’s relationship to each other. They’re a wonderful couple, they’re a caring couple. It would give us such great joy to walk them down the aisle and see them get married.

The new ad hits airwaves statewide as New Yorkers United for Marriage delivers more than 10,000 ‘reply cards’ to the state legislature, signed by New Yorkers across the state who are calling for thepassage of marriage equality legislation.

The cards were collected from a statewide mailer, which featured a tear-off card that supporters signed and returned to urge legislators to make marriage a reality for all New Yorkers.

“More New Yorkers support marriage for committed gay and lesbian couples than ever before and we want to make sure they are heard,” said Brian Ellner, New York’s Senior Strategist for the Human Rights Campaign. “The ad and mailers are intended to amplify the voices of the majority of New Yorkers.”

“The Blumenthals represent the countless parents across New York who want to see their sons and daughters marry the person they love,” said Ross D. Levi, Executive Director of the Empire State Pride Agenda. “Recent polls show the majority New Yorkers want these loving couples to be able to say ‘I do’ in front of their friends and families.”

“The Blumenthals want what all parents want – security and respect for all of their children,” said Evan Wolfson, founder and President of Freedom to Marry. “Marriage matters, and gay and lesbian couples deserve the freedom to marry with all the rich meaning, protections, and responsibilities marriage brings. It’s time for our legislators to put New York on the right side of history and let all loving, committed couples share in the freedom to marry.”

The new ad comes as a recent poll shows that a supermajority of New Yorkers – 58 percent – support marriage for gay and lesbian couples.
