For Immediate Release: May 9, 2011Hunter to Offer DADT Amendment to National Defense Authorization Act
Washington D.C. – During consideration of the national defense authorization act this week by the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) will offer an amendment to require that all four military service chiefs certify that implementation of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT)” repeal won’t impact combat readiness and effectiveness. The amendment mirrors legislation previously introduced by Hunter-H.R. 337, the Restore Military Readiness Act.“The four military service chiefs are far more closely connected to the day-to-day realities facing each respective service branch than those who are currently required to sign off on the repeal-including the President,” said Hunter, a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. “The President, the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs should all take part in the certification process, but excluding the service chiefs is a mistake. They may agree to move forward with the repeal or they may have other recommendations for implementation and timing. Either way, their unvarnished perspective is critical to this process-especially as it relates to preserving the military’s high rate of effectiveness.
“I’ve said before that our priority should be winning in Afghanistan and focusing on the roadside bomb threat, the primary source of U.S. casualties. The repeal of DADT won’t make our troops any safer or help achieve victory any faster. Even so, any movement toward implementation must be efficient and show respect for the culture and tradition unique to each service branch and the military as a whole.”
Now that I’ve gotten that off of my chest, the Washington Blade’s Chris Johnson reports on the other craptastic measure that will come up:
The Hunter amendment could be one among several amendments that could be introduced by opponents of gays in the military to disrupt the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal process. Informed sources said other measures could be an outright abrogation of the repeal measure that Congress passed and Obama signed last year as opposed to merely implementing a certification expansion.…R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of Log Cabin Republicans, said those who worked for legislative repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” plan to send a letter in opposition to the Hunter measure and similar amendments before the committee markup.
Despite efforts from advocates, if the Hunter amendment is supported in committee along party lines, the measure would likely pass because Republicans enjoy a majority on the panel by a margin of 35-27. After the defense authorization bill is reported to the House floor, a similar vote of approval could be expected on the House floor because Republican have control of the chamber. The bill could see a House floor vote as early as the week of May 23.
I hope Hunter won’t be disappointed, but I have to remind him that The Rapture is scheduled for May 21, so he might as well chill out.

I still say we just start outing them – every time one of these bigots openstheir mouths, someone “take one for the team” and leak to the press about the blowjob they gave you in the bathroom or some other hookup. Their word against ours. Their schedules are public enough it wouldn’t be hard to pull together a credible account.
They’re so fucking frightened of us, let’s give them something to be scared of.
1) it’ll get to the point where any of them are scared to keep up this bullshit because everyone will think they’re gay (horrors)
2) the general public will more quickly realize that every one of these bigots has some sort of demon they haven’t dealt with and stop listening to any of the fear mongering.
3) it’s way quicker than just waiting for them to die off.
I’m in NC – I’d volunteer for McHenry, but after all the hot young guys already linked to him, no one would believe he’d be interested in a getting heavier, middle aged man…
This is one more demonstrationof what a catastrophic mistake Obama’s precious “legislative repeal” was. If he had simply let judicial repeal happen and the policy be struck down as unconstitutional, none of this could be happening. But no, our fierce advocate had to do it his way, ignore the courts and have congress pass a toothless repeal law that, as we are seeing, can be undone in all sorts of ways by a hostile legislature.
Of course, now he’ll be able to use DADT as a campaign issue all over again. ”This time we’re really going to end DADT. Really and for true.” And large numbers of LGBT lemmings will line up and vote for him again. There is, I tell you, no hope for a community that blinkered and willfully clueless.
Exactly as I said would happenHe has his alleged repeal; he will ask for financial and electorial support from liberals by saying “I repealed DADT.”
But discharges continue and will continue until the bigots in Congress dismantle repeal. Then the President will be able to ask for financial and electorial support from conservatives by saying “DADT is still firmly in place, praise God.”
The man couldn’t be more of a weasle if he sprouted whiskers and a furry tail.
Holow wordsAnybody who thinks that it has any change of passing by the president think twice. This is window dressing for the constituents because they know very well that those amendments have no change of passing the white house or the senate for that measure.
If they attach it to the defense appropriations bill, it stands a better chance of getting through. One would hope the senate would strip out any such amendment, but I don’t trust the senate any more than I trust Obama.
PreciselyYou got it. This is a distraction designed to annoy the unwary. Don’t fall for it.
This could lead to an extra-strength *burn*.Remember that by now all of the service chiefs in question say the training leading to repeal is going smoothly. This bill is based on the macho heterosexual-supremacist idea that of course the top officers in the military will be on the reactionary bandwagon; how much pointing-and-laughing mileage will we get at the GOP’s expense if they push through this amendment and all the service chiefs promptly certify that repeal is going well and is a good idea?
There is no end to their hatredThere never will be. These people just have to age and die off. Honestly, once the Boomers are gone (I’m one myself), things will be a lot better. My generation is the last gasp of bigotry. After that, it will only be the fringe idiots who persist in their hatred, like White Supremacists.
