Daniel Hernandez, Jr. was the right man in the right place at the right time. Just five days into his internship for Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford, the 20-year old college student was checking people into Rep. Gifford’s “Congress on Your Corner” event when the shooting started.
According to Arizona Republic, Hernandez started assisting victims before the shooting even stopped.
When the shots began that morning, he saw many people lying on the ground, including a young girl. Some were bleeding. Hernandez said he moved from person to person checking pulses.“First the neck, then the wrist,” he said. One man was already dead. Then he saw Giffords. She had fallen and was lying contorted on the sidewalk. She was bleeding.
Using his hand, Hernandez applied pressure to the entry wound on her forehead. He pulled her into his lap, holding her upright against him so she wouldn’t choke on her own blood. [snip]
Hernandez used his hand to apply pressure until someone from inside Safeway brought him clean smocks from the meat department. He used them to apply pressure on the entrance wound, unaware there was an exit wound. He never let go of her.
He stayed with Giffords until paramedics arrived. They strapped her to a board and loaded her into an ambulance. Hernandez climbed in with her. On the ride to the hospital, he held her hand. She squeezed his back.
Hernandez’s immediate actions probably saved her life, a hospital physician said.
Daniel is a Latino man. According to Dallas Voice, Daniel is also gay and a member of the City of Tucson Commission on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues.
Like Mark Bingham, the gay rugby player who helped thwart the plans of the 911 hijackers on Flight 93, and like the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender soldiers still serving in silence in our military under threat of expulsion, Daniel’s actions remind us that LGBT Americans are actively serving society. A society that is over 90% heterosexual.
Like U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Colorado Supreme Court Justice Monica Marquez and Speaker of the California Assembly John Pérez, Daniel’s actions remind us that Latino Americans are actively serving society at large, a society that is 85% non-Latino.
Andrés Duque from Blabbeando so beautifully encapsulates the significance of Daniel Hernandez’s actions to the Latino and LGBT communities:
Of course, from the accounts, Daniel is a hero regardless of whether he’s Latino or gay or Irish or purple. But it’s striking that in a state that has unfortunately become a national standard-bearer for some of the worst xenophobic sentiments in the current political climate, it IS a Latino man who happens to be gay who decided to stay by Congresswoman’s Giffords’ side and might very well have saved her life.
I can’t help but be moved at how such a selfless gesture can cut straight through all those efforts to demonize Latinos – or gays – specially in light of recent events in Arizona.

It isn’t as Mr. Duque thinks.
I’m afraid Mr. Duque’s thinking about this event isn’t very realistic.
You see, the Christians believe that Daniel Hernandez will go to Hell because he is gay and unrepentant about it. On the other hand, Sarah Palin, John Boehner, and the folks at Fox News believe he deserves to go to Hell for having saved Representative Gifford’s life.
So I don’t see how this will end anyone’s being demonized. On the contrary, Daniel’s heroism will only make the Christians and Republicans hate Latino and gay people even more than they already do.
The rest of us, however, can only hope that someday, somehow, good will overcome evil.
Not all Christiansand not all Republicans.
Now the Fox News crowd of Xtians and Republicans, yes, but not every Christian is a fundmenatlist Christian and not every Republican is a batshit crazy Tea Partier.
As Arizona residents horrified by the extremism and racism that is defining AZ right now…My hustand’s first words upon hearing about this shooting was: Please dear god, don’t let the shooter be a hispanic. Not only were his pleas answered, but we are learning the emerging hero in this sad saga is an openly gay hispanic young man. As parents of a gay son who are horrified at what is going on in Arizona right now, this could not have been more beautiful music to our ears. Thank you Daniel Hernandez. Your actions were so brave and we are so proud of you.
You’re RightAs far as the Christians are concerned, you are right Kevinchi. Probably only 70% of them take pleasure in war, injustice, and the overall suffering of others. I apologize for generalizing.
As far as the Republicans are concerned, you are right in that some of them — the “enlightened” ones — don’t hate Latino or gay people especially. These Republicans just hate anyone who is not venal, regardless of ethnicity or sexuality. So, for example, they might like Augusto Pinochet, even though he was Latino, and they might like Roy Cohn, even though he was gay.
I’ve read reportsthat fake social networking profiles started popping up as soon as the suspect’s name was released, claiming that the shooter was liberal and gay or trans. I haven’t seen any screencaps, though. Does anybody have them?
I say as a far-left atheist…that I am shocked and disappointed to see this comment on this blog. I’m very surprised that the moderators haven’t at least asked that it be removed.
Proof positivethat both sides really truly need to tone down the rhetoric, because you haven’t the slightest idea what you’re talking about.
For example, there’s a difference between being Republican and voting Republican in a particular election cycle.
And no, I don’t think that your statements identify in 40% (yes!) of Christians. However, I do think that your statements identify Christians in power, and sadly they do have the largest voices and the most juice.
And this is from an agnostic who is partial to Taoism and Buddhism…though some in my family are Chirstian, they would (and will) celebrate something like this
He’s an amazing person…Saw a short interview over at JMG; he doesn’t think the word ‘hero’ characterizes him. That’s what heroes almost always think. At any rate, he really seems to be an intelligent, calm, caring person — a very decent man — an amazingly good thing to see.
One Bright SpotWatched the news all day yesterday in growing alarm. Everyone seemed to agree that the R’s and D’s needed to tone down the rhetoric. Excuse me? Democrats don’t tend to attract racist, sexist or homophobic right wingers – let alone religious zealots and those prone to violence. So, getting to see Daniel and hear what he did was one bright spot in yesterday’s reporting of the Tucson Massacre.
Please ponder how negative stereotypesPlease ponder how negative stereotypes against LGBT people have made your own life difficult. Please don’t turn around and do the same to others.
He’s Getting Praised at WorldNetDailyAmazingly enough – I am guessing they don’t yet realize he’s gay.

What do you bet they pull the column down if/when they learn he’s a ‘mo?
