what it means is….…. we are winning the social justice battle, but are losing the economic justice battle. by that I mean the Right has been using Christian Fundies all along, pushing social buttons to get economic results, now that they have the econ results (or most of them) they no longer need the Fundies, and will be jettisoning them this year.

OT, but…I’ve seen you post before & always wondered about your tag line:
Are the words for “gift” and “the current moment” really the same in any major Chinese language?
That 2nd sentence makes it seem like it couldn’t possibly be an authentically Chinese proverb. Of course I can be wrong, but the odds are heavily against 2 unrelated languages having 2 unrelated words be homonyms in both tongues.

This is the second time I have seen a clip from this show.I am not exactly sure, since under normal circumstances, I can’t manage to keep FAUX News on for more than 5 minutes, but based on the two clips I have seen, this show seems to be an attempt to lure twenty-something moderates (and neo-cons who are not Christianists) to the network.  While older neo-cons have to hold their noses and pretend to adhere to the bigotry and prejudice of the hoi polloi who stuff their ballot boxes, younger ones may not have gotten on the Christianist populist bandwagon.  
The U.S. is a nation where more than half the voting population actually believes that the earth was created in a literal six 24-hour day period, and that the only reason the dinosaurs died out is because hey could not fit on the ark.  When they get panicked enought to come out to vote, this significant chunk of hoi polloi is what allows the neo-cons (and a good number of actual nut-cases) to get elected.

I’ve wondered the sameOn the surface it doesn’t seem likely. OTOH, having studied Mandarin I am aware that Chinese uses a tonal system where a particular syllable  can be pronounced with different inflections that changes the meaning of the word. Mandarin uses 4 different tones, while Cantonese uses 7. Because of this puns are very popular in Chinese.
Unfortunately it has been a long time since I have used Mandarin and I can’t remember the words for “gift” and “present”.
Here is a popular Chinese tongue twister that I was taught. I don’t know how to indicate the tones in html so you’ll just have to imagine them:
“Mama ma ma.
Ma ma mama.
Mama ma ma.”
Translation:
“Mother* rides the horse.
The horse throws Mother.
Mother scolds the horse.”
So “ma” can mean horse, ride, throw, scold, or mother, depending on the inflection used.
[* It has been noted by linguists that "mama" exists as a word for "mother" in almost every language, probably because it is the easiest syllable for an infant's mouth to pronounce.]

The line is in “Kung Fu Panda”On Po’s first night at the dojo as the prophesied Dragon Warrior, he is very despondant. Master Oogway uses the line to suggest he focus on the now and not on the what may be.
It is definitely NOT an actual Chinese proverb, as the pun exists only in English. That said, I think it is still a good piece of wisdom.

It is also interesting to note that “baby speak” for father is always papa or babaWhich, not coincidentally, is the second easiest sound for an infant human to make. This is true even in languages where “mother” and “father” sound nothing at all like “mama” or “baba.”
