I wonder if there will be a public reaction or eruption by the fundie fringe, since it has spent a lot of time, energy and money trying to make DADT a moral issue. (AP):
Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl says the Roman Catholic church has no position on whether gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve openly in the military. On Fox News Sunday, Wuerl was asked if he opposed Congress’s repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” — a repeal that President Barack Obama signed into law last week.
He said, “That’s a question that has to be worked out politically.”

Why was he asked in the first place?Oh right. FOX “News”. Never mind then.
No News HereThe smarter anti-gay groups — religious or otherwise — will largely take a bye on DADT.
No, they’re not becoming enlightened. Rather, they’re recognizing which battles they can win, and which aren’t worth the fight. DADT is one of the latter. That’s why most of the anti-DADT repeal noise is coming from the religious crazies outside the ranks of better-organized groups and from the political crazies outside GOP leadership circles.
Put another way, I expect we’ll be seeing the Catholic bishops and other smarter groups starting to move toward the “last redoubt” of blocking marriage equality. I believe they see this as their great crusade, as the greatest battle to be fought with all means and at all costs.
In other words, gird up your loins and stockpile your weaponry for the coming battles against the religious and political anti-gay forces. As nasty as they’ve been in the past few years, what is to come will be much, much escalated.
Good for them. Why not civil marriage?I simply don’t get why they can’t have the same opinion on civil marriage.
…the Roman Catholic church has no position …If only they would be like this all the time.
Maybe the RC’s will do to the Department of Defense like they’ve done in the places that say the gays can adopt and pull all the RC Chaplains from the US Military.
SuprisingWhen I saw the interview I was doing what almost all of us do, I was mouthing the typical response. When he came out with this remark I was stunned. What is interesting is he just returned from the Vatican after becoming a Cardinal a few weeks ago.
I do not know if his statement will hold, there are many other RC Bishops and Cardinals out there who are very far right/anti-gay on the subject of LGBT people. Look how the Vatican is desperately trying to walk back the pope’s statements on condom use.
Brian Brown-nose, Maggie Gagger, Bryan Fissure’sheads just exploded. BWAHAHAHAH.
Then again, maybe the Church is smart enoughto know that it may not be a good idea to provoke people that have already been issued weapons.
I’m with you on that. However, an “answer” is that, for the magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church, “marriage” has to do with a whole lot of hocus pocus about sexual activity – and they do not wish to condone anything that would tend to validate non-heterosexual relationships.
On the military service issue, they don’t have a moral guidepost – it does not require sexual activity, does not involve reproductive rights, and does not provide greater rights for women.
Baloney!I don’t believe the cardinal any further than I can throw his bloated butt.
This Cardinal has already lost in DC on all fronts,They lost on the non-discrimination ordinance; they lost on the adoption case and had to pull out or stop using tax payer money to discriminate against the LGBT community in placing children; and they lost on marriage in DC.
This “Cardinal” has no place to go in this town. He is fucked as far as our issues are concerned.
