No matter how much members of the religious right claim that they “love” the lgbt community, their actions reveal them to be unprincipled liars.
Take, for example, the latest purveyor of the “we stand against homosexuals because we love them” meme, John-Henry Westen of the right-wing LifeSite News:
“They're not opposed out of any kind of hatred or animosity. In fact, they're opposed out of love,” Westen contends. “Christians care enough about those men and women who are in these destructive lifestyles to tell them that it's hurtful — and it is hurtful. God designed us so that a man and a woman fit together in complimentarity.”
You know what is more harmful? Lies pushed to make it seem that homosexuality is a “deadly lifestyle.”
Which, according to one of my facebook friends, Wendy Equal Leigh, is what Lifesite peddles.
She pointed out to me a recent article pushed by the online publication:
75% of sexually active homosexuals are carrying Human Papiloma Virus, study suggests
Preliminary results from a Spanish study of sexually-active homosexuals indicates that seventy-five percent are carrying the Human Papiloma Virus (HPV), according to a report by Europa Press.
Sounds terrible doesn't it? Except for two things:
1. Lifesite News fails to give a link to the study, which can be argued as not a big deal. But the second point can't.
2. Lifesite News went into detail about the study. I highlighted the important part:
The study, which is seeking to follow sexually active homosexuals who normally use condoms, has so far followed 40 subjects over a period of several months, and has arrived at a preliminary figure of 75 percent HPV infection.
Just how in the world can a study which only looked at 40 subjects be used to make a generalization about all gay men? You see that's why its important for there to be a link to the original study. It could be that Lifesite News is distorting this study to make a conclusion that doesn't even exist.
Based on its past track record (see related posts below), it's not a farfetched conclusion to make about this publication.
If lying on the lgbt community is the type of love Westen pushes, I would hate to see his definition of hate.

…wow… I guess I’ve been loved along and just didn’t know it. But if thats love, then why are thier so many laws aginst all of that? And why did Jesus Christ speak out against so much of that?
I’m confused now… just how are these people ‘Christians’?
How are they following the teachings of Jesus Christ by doing these things?

Sample SizeWell, it’s been a while since my last statistics class, but 40 doesn’t seem like an unreasonably small sample size for a straight up yes/no question. This is especially true since the null hypothesis, at least as far as I can tell from that writeup, is an infection rate around 30%.
I do notice that they’re comparing sexually active gay men (presumably men anyway) of unmentioned age (and location, for that matter) to Spanish youth, without mentioning if they’re sexually active or not. Also, there are the typical problem where people suffering from heterosexist norms end up with poorer quality health care and the like.
We would need to see the actual study to be sure.
It’s HPV.I notice that they don’t specify whether they’re only considering sexually-transmitted (or usually-sexually-transmitted) strains of HPV or not. If it’s just HPV generally…well, you’re going to have a pretty high incidence in any population, quite often asymptomatic.

HPV is estimated to be the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Most sexually active men and women will probably acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. The American Social Health Association reported estimates that about 75-80% of sexually active Americans will be infected with HPV at some point in their lifetime. By the age of 50 more than 80% of American women will have contracted at least one strain of genital HPV.

the people who really buy their own bullshit like that are the scariest ones, i think…I’m sure in their own minds, they’re perfectly civilized people. When some bigot pulls out some shit like “we don’t hate you, we just hate your lifestyle”, it makes me want to curl up in a ball.

Actually, that study is likely to be accuratethe more damning intellectually dishonesty is according to Planned Parenthood, that rate is only slightly higher that the rate for young sexually active heterosexual adults, estimated at 70%.
HPV sounds scary, but it’s very, very common.

Not trying to hijack the threadI have been looking for you here and at KOS. Thank you for your personal efforts to effect the repeal of DADT. I have been following you for a while now, and your reasoned argument, passionate defense of your rights, and fighting spirit have moved at least one voter into supporting your efforts beyond the DADT and Marriage Equality struggles. I hope this holiday season finds you healthy, happy, and reasonably content after a big win.
