My heart goes out to Elizabeth and her family. She’s been through so much, and shown so much strength to those battling cancer. (WaPo):
Elizabeth Edwards is gravely ill and doctors have told her she only has weeks to live, according to a family friend who is among those who have gathered with Edwards at her North Carolina home. The family issued a statement Monday that said doctors have told her that further treatment for her cancer would be unproductive, and the family friend further described Edwards’ condition to The Associated Press.
The friend said Edwards was briefly hospitalized last week and received treatment, but doctors have now told her that she may only have up to a couple months of life left. The friend spoke on condition of anonymity because of the personal details divulged.
The coffeehouse was graced with a visit by Elizabeth Edwards back in 2007 after I saw her with young ones Jack and Emma Claire (as well as her former husband and then-prez candidate) at the local Target one Sunday. Kate and I didn’t approach them, figuring they were probably frequently mobbed. Elizabeth later dropped by to leave this note on the blog entry I wrote about it, titled “Presidential candidate in aisle 2 at Durham Target.”
You should have spoken upPam and Kate, you should have spoken up. Although it wasn’t too crowded, we did get a lot of people — all with smiles and words of support — as we managed to go down nearly every aisle: the usual trip to Target. Followed by lunch at the Food Court at SouthPoint and lots more friendly hellos.

May the rest of her life’s journey be filled with love and support.

She has always struck me as one classy lady. She handles adversity with grace and dignity, but she has never been afraid to speak up. I’ll never forget when she called MSNBC while Ann Coulter was on air, spouting on about nothing. Through all of Ann’s hysterics, Elizabeth remained calm, collected, and on point.
Through all of her trials, Elizabeth Edwards has always struck me as a ‘this is the way it is, deal with it’ kind person – practical and realistic. To know that she was facing terminal cancer, yet to separate herself from her husband took a level of courage, I am sure, that seems to be the exception and not the rule in society.
She has seen her share of challenges, most of them public, all of them painful. But she always manages to keep her head up. I wish her peace.
Devastating news.I remember thinking, in 2004, that we’d be better off if we traded the men on the ticket for their wives (and then swapped their positions). Elizabeth Edwards has more strength, intelligence, poise, passion, compassion and class than politics can handle.
Her canceris taking the same trajectory as my mom’s: breast, then bone then liver. She didn’t last too long after that. She had a long, fulfilling life, but it was marked by hard times, especially the death of her son at the age of seven. All through out all this adversity, she was strong, optimistic and witty. Even in the last few months. I see alot of my Mom’s characteristics in Elizabeth Edwards, which is why this is hitting me hard. May you find peace and comfort in your family and friends, Elizabeth. YOU should have run for president!
No matter the politicsThis is just sad.
Definitely a classy person.
I remember her leadinga townhall meeting during the Kerry/Edwards campaign, seeing it on tv. Smart, smart, smarter than the vp candidate. She would have been a great 2nd lady.
Best to her and her family at this time.
