Given DeLay’s record on gay rights, perhaps there’s some poetic justice to the fact that the district attorney who obtained the conviction, Rosemary Lehmberg, is an out and proud lesbian. Lehmberg, a Democrat, was elected to replace Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle, who initiated DeLay’s prosecution, after Earle retired in 2008. Before that, Lehmberg served as Earle’s first assistant for 10 years in the office that’s home to the state’s Public Integrity Unity, which is charged with investigating corruption in government.

Still stuck in dresses because of swellingI can’t wear pants; my abdomen is so swollen (and I’m retaining so much of the IV fluids I was given) that it hurts to even put loose pants on, so I’m stuck wearing sundresses with long sleeve shirts for the time being. Not a huge hardship, but I doubt I can fit in any of my jeans until the internal healing and swelling go down.

Well, as you know….It's all relative and there is a daily change back to normal… you will really really notice next time you 'miss your period.'

New term for me to learn: “Swelly Belly”Joined the group Hystersisters, which is a hub for women pre and post surgery. Of the post-surgery problems that are the most irritating in my case are:
1) fluid retention: I gained almost 15lbs of water both from IV administered after surgery and who knows how much during. It doesn’t seem to be leaving my body.
2) Swollen abdomen. Even though it was laproscopic surgery, the fact that it disturbed surrounding tissues in the abdomen means swelling that is so pronounced that I can no longer see my feet, lol. And forget wearing pants. But on the Hystersisters site I found an explanation that while not exactly great news, it helps put it into perspective:

What is Swelly Belly? What causes it? How do I get rid of it?
First of all, the term swelly belly (Latin term: Swellibellicus) is a Hyster Sisters-created word that refers to post-op swelling of the abdomen. It can occur in any type of hysterectomy procedure, but seems to be more prevalent in abdominal surgeries.
The current views are that swelly belly is caused by trauma to the abdominal tissues, gasses used during surgery, and/or fluids collecting in the tissues due to trauma during surgery.
If you’ve ever sprained your ankle or been stung by a bee, you’ve probably had some swelling at the injured site. Same thing with swelly belly.
What swelly belly is NOT is fat, or weak muscles (though they may contribute), or last nights lasagna collecting around your mid-section (though that can also contribute!)
Swelly belly seems to make an appearance soon after surgery in most ladies (though not always all) and may hang around for several weeks or even months. It is exacerbated (made worse) by too much activity, lifting things that are too heavy, being on your feet too long, stuffing yourself in jeans that are too tight, and just generally overdoing it. It also seems to be worse in the evenings, after a long day of overdoing it.
So, you ask, “How do I get rid of it?” You don’t. It has to go away on it’s own. Resting may help, not overdoing it, not lifting things that are too heavy, not being on your feet too long, whatever the triggers are for your case of Swellibellicus – that’s what you should avoid.
Sometimes a good support panty can help too, but again, make sure it isn’t too tight, or it can make the problem worse. (Support panties work with swelly belly like putting a pressure bandage on a sprained ankle can take the swelling in the ankle down.) Occasionally, ice packs or a heating pad may help too, but check with your doctor first before using either.
What won’t help? Exercise, especially too soon, though after your doctor has released you, it will help tighten up your abs. But the swelling in the tissue may not disappear with exercise. Dieting may not help either, Gals, though if you’ve got somewhat of a tummy to begin with, you may notice some improvement. However, once again, dieting will not get rid of the swelling in the tissues.
So what’s a girl to do? Just wear yours proudly and don’t sweat the small stuff. Swelly belly is just one of those things you may have to endure until your body has healed. A small price to pay for getting rid of painful periods, excessive bleeding, fibroid tumors, cancer, or whatever else was the reason for your surgery.

The Biggest AIDS story since Protease InhibitorsThe big news on the AIDS front has been this study about the drug Truvada as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The study found that 44 percent that took Truvada were 44 percent less likely to get infected with HIV than those taking a placebo. Of those who reported taking the pill regularly, the percentage rose to 72.8%. But the real number, often buried or ignored in many of the stories in the media, is much greater.
According to the NY Times:

But when only the men whose blood tests showed that they had taken their pill faithfully every day were considered, the pill was more than 90 percent effective, said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, head of the infectious diseases division of the National Institutes of Health, which paid for the study along with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Even more promising, according to the L.A. Times:

Actually taking the drug proved to be crucial. When researchers tested the levels of Truvada in the blood of the 36 patients in the treatment arm of the trial who contracted HIV, they found no drug at all in 91% of them and only barely detectable levels in the rest. “That could explain all the infections,” Grant said. (emphasis added)

In other words, when actually used as instructed, it could be between 90% to 100% effective! As for resistance, no one who was HIV negative at the beginning of the study (including those who became HIV positive later) developed resistance. But it turned out 2 of the participants were already HIV positive but had not yet developed antibodies. They did develop some resistance.
This raises some very interesting and serious questions for AIDS and LGBT activists. Give the almost guaranteed opposition from the Religious Right, it is important that, after a period of discussion and debate, we come up with a unified position. There is no one more anti-barebacking than I am but unlike the Christian moralists, it is based solely on scientific and medical realities. I am much more interested in saving lives and protecting health than imposing my values or being right. It has become quite clear that a significant minority of gay men are going to engage in barebacking whether I like it or not. And that doesn’t even include those of us who “slip” now and then. Besides, almost no one uses condoms for oral sex, and though the risk is lower it is not non-existent. If this pill or others like it can prevent HIV transmission than I’m for it, even if it might increase unsafe sex. And if it is almost 100% effective when taken as directed, can condomless sex even be considered “unsafe”, at least when it comes to HIV? Yes there are other STD’s and there will be future versions of AIDS, especially if people stop using condoms, but for now isn’t the main point to stop HIV transmission? These are the questions we will have to think about. Not to mention who will pay for it.

Don’t believe the lame critic reviews of BURLESQUE….it’s fabulousOn Rotten Tomatoes only about 32% of critics give it a good review, but 81% of audience like it. I’ll go see it again while I can see it on a big screen, and you know drag queens from coast to coast are sewing those outfits and stealing the choreography.
