Desperation is setting in for the professional bigot set. Tony Perkins can’t help himself, painting the majority of soldiers as so homophobic that they will leave in droves if the colleagues they either know or think they are gay are able to serve openly. He earns bonus points for tossing out the race card. Via Right Wing Watch:
Barack Obama is opposed to the draft as a matter of principle, to be sure. So are most politicians in both parties. But the president’s drive to repeal the ban on open homosexuality in the military could have this unintended consequence: It could bring back the draft.
…The military is not a red state/blue state institution. It unifies our country. It draws its dedicated members from all regions. Still, it is no secret that the military is a socially conservative institution. It recruits heavily from rural areas in the South, the Midwest, and the Inter-Mountain states.
In our larger cities, black and Hispanic recruits are encouraged to consider the military – which has historically been a great ladder of achievement for racial and ethnic minorities.
These are the very areas and groups who have been most resistant to the demands of the homosexual lobby. These are the very regions and groups who have rallied to our side whenever we put a defense of marriage initiative on the ballot
If these regions and groups do not enlist in our all-volunteer force, President Obama will be driven to the place he does not want to go: the military draft.

It is a pretty common belief in the black community that gays put anti-gay marriage amendments on the ballot, actually (non-sensical as that is).
To be perfectly honset, I really want the NAACP and other groups to speak out about Perkins and his ilk.
To the extent that anti-LGBT bigots resign or retire rom the military . . . . . . that lessens the chances of a Christianist military coup to establish a federal theocracy. It should be obvious to anyone with a scintilla of a brain in their cranium (something the rather silly Mr. Perkins appears to be completely lacking, or perhaps he is motivated by a lack of patriotism, putting religious bigotry ahead of the good of the people), that the nation would be better served by a military that has people of good moral character – something that Perkins and other Christianist bigots, who can’t put the public good ahead of their personal moral failings, sorely lack.
I’ve been saying for years that our worst enemies are NOT straight,and this closeted nincompoop is a prime example. Someone please, please, PLEASE out the bastard so he’ll shut up and leave America alone.
Future PredictionsI am no psychic, but given the history of our military’s integration of the races and our allies’ integration of the straights and gays I am pretty confident Perkins prediction will not come true. Oh sure, some fundies, particularly fundie chaplains, will bail, but not enough to impact readiness.
On the other hand, given the activities of the anti-gay hate movement to date, I can confidently predict that the repeal of DADT, whether legislatively or through the courts, will result in aggressive actions by the legal arm of that movement to 1) manufacture instances of TEH GAY! bothering “normal” people and 2) sue like crazy about those same incidents. After all, the anti-gay hate movement will need something to keep the donations coming in.
Not to mention…Fewer rapes and murders of the people we’re supposed to be “liberating”. Of course, to eliminate those you’d have to stop hiring mercenaries — which could actually potentially save money as well. (Wouldn’t it be nice if we could get to the point where our military is widely recognized for protecting civilians and defending international law? Hell, most of the troops wouldn’t have to do anything differently…)
He may not be heterosexual, but he’s straight.I think this is one of those cases where the straight/queer and heterosexual/homosexual/bisexual/asexual distinctions can be effectively separated. I have some heterosexual friends who are queer as hell — and while all the homophobic closet cases, quite possibly including Perkins, may be attracted to people of the same sex, they’re quite extravagantly straight.
20 years in the military, this guy is sadly ‘normal’ as it goes…and I’m amazed that he doesn’t even realize what he’s written is inflamatory to nearly every minority that serves in the US Military and believe me, the military is 100% American and 100% ‘minority’.
Guys like this? These are the guys that hold Ku Klux Klan meetings in military spaces and just can’t figure out why its wrong. These are the guys that demand that they CANT work for a female officer who out ranks them and has greater senority.
This, this is the guy that quits because no one wants to work with his bigoted ass and makes it known that the world doesn’t orbit his pink pucker.
Sadly, there are others just like him in the military. They come in, do their thing and then leave before their end of service because they can’t work with anyone of color or female.

There’s a lot of data there to look into. Note that support among blacks was 57% in 1994.Why has support for repeal supposedly dropped so much among blacks since 1994, while support is way up among other groups? Why has support among black Protestants dropped from 55% to 46% in the same time period? Support among white evangelicals is the lowest of all, but even among that group support has increased from 31% to 43% between 1994 and 2010.
When we see an increase of support for repealing DADT in every other group it makes the decrease of support among two small groups – blacks and black evangelicals – worth a closer look. Is the data accurate? Are the sample sizes large enough to be statistically significant? If the data is accurate, then what is going on that is decreasing support for repeal of DADT in only one sector of the population? And would Tony Perkins – who seems to know a lot about it – be involved in the reasons for that decline in support?
Inquiring minds think that this is worthy of some investigation.

Actually, it looks as if the number of black people that favor open military service has decreased but the number of black people that are opposed to open military service really hasn’t increased; it’s pretty much stayed the same.

That might be a better question (and there are a number of different answers to it and reasons but overall…th evidence seem to be saying yes, the black community is mor ehomophobic than it used to be).
Certainly, I will say that it seems as if in my lifetime, the black church has taken an increasingly central role in Black political life. Black secular organizations seem non-existent.

As far as your questions about polling accuracy…that’s why I always like to look at the Pew polls. They’ve got a good reputation and they’ve also been doing tracking studies on various social issues for many years.
It’s another reason why I wince when I see commenters here throwing out figures like 70% to 80% approval for DADT repeal. It’s crazy. But I guess we just WANT to believe.

That’s not the first poll on gay issues where I’ve noticed…it almost seems to be an increasing indifference to gay issues as opposed to increasing opposition to gay issues…it’s really weird.

My reference to Tony Perkins was a suggestion that he’s part of the organized efforts to increase homophobiain some communities. If this polling data is accurate (a big if imo) then something is making U.S. black evangelicals more homophobic than they used to be – and what might that something be? Could it be connected to Republican efforts to win more black votes to their side? And what about the global efforts – notably in Africa – by white evangelicals to stir up murderous homophobia, all of this supported by huge amounts of money?
