Kerry Eleveld at the Advocate has posted a new piece, DADT: Signs of Hope, Doom, where in she describe backroom negotiations are already underway to ditch the effort to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in the lame duck legislative session:
Over the weekend, observers of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” debate began cautiously acknowledging that an effort is in the works to potentially move a stripped down version of the must-pass National Defense Authorization Act that would exclude repeal.
A person close to the process said Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is looking into a deal with Sec. Gates that would cut ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ out of the Defense bill in order to smooth its way to passage.
“Levin is making calls under the premise – we can’t afford to waste time on a controversial provision, so we’ll strip out the controversial provision and be able to get the bill on and off the floor in the available amount of time,” said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network responds:
“We welcome Secretary Gates call for the senate to act on repeal in the lame duck session. Indeed, the senate should call up the defense bill reported out of committee and pass it before it goes home for the year,” Sarvis said. “Any talk about a watered down defense bill, whereby the ‘Don’t Ask’ revisions would be stripped out, is unacceptable and offensive to the gay and lesbian service members who risk their lives everyday.”
This is pretty much the fat lady singing folks. Democrats are preparing to abandon the fight. We will see them, once again, as they did on LGBT initiatives in healthcare reform, as they did when they passed DADT and DOMA, and Bill Clinton signed them, they take a big crap on us, then come to us and say, “Well, what else could we do? We had to.”
Don’t you believe it. You tell them, “You could have fought for it.”

What else is new? It’s been clear to anyone who’s followed what been going on for at least a month (if not longer) that DADT was not going to be repealed by this president and this congress.
But, oooh! the Republicans would be sssoooo much worse! They would have…um…er…they would have not repealed it even harder. Or something. Let’s all keep supporting our pals the Democrats. They’ll get around to our equality sometime before Jesus comes back. They will. Really, they will.
..and now per NYTimes he has to replace GATES and 4 Chiefs!!http://tinyurl.com/2deyyac
So we will get to see him pull another BIG FAIL! as a leader.
Maybe he will make the Marine Commandant CJCSWould not that speak volumes to the LGBT community?
Her Comes The Fat Lady!
Here I come, Green PartyNot that party affiliation means that’s where I’ll vote come 2012 general election. I just don’t want to be counted as a registered Democrat anymore. I’m more liberal than any Democrat anyway.
Mr. President, your duck is lameWhy not put the National Defense Authorization Act through, full version, and dare the GOP to obstruct it? “Go right ahead, Sen. McConnell, tell the American public you’ll de-fund the whole war because you don’t like DADT repeal. You want to dump the Commander-in-Chief anyway, so why should we coax you?”
It’s always a good time for a Gummint Shutdown, especially as the GOP usually gets the blame. And, besides, Karzai doesn’t need this month’s salary anyway, he’s too rich as it is.
And where is Nancy Pelosi in all these discussions?
Obama wants Pelosi outShe is too far to the left(meaning anywhere left of center) for his tastes, and he partially blames her, no doubt, for the defeat, even though the Liberals stayed and the Blue Dogs were defeated.
disgustinghas Reid even once calling the republicans’ bluff on a filibuster threat?
D vs RDemocrats have become the party of “roll-over-and-play-dead.” I think I may actually prefer the party of “no.” At least they are honest about how they really feel about me.
God knows how the Dems ever expect to ever win another close election when they continue to sh*t on 10% of their base. If the Dems think 1/3 of LGBTQ voters going for the Republicans was bad, try bailing on DADT. 2010 will look like a cake walk compared to 2012.
I expected better from Levin. His cowardice and lack of support from leadership (Obama) reflects Democrats continued lack of spine.
I warned him months ago specifically to this point, that every time a ‘study’ has been called up, the conclusion was that there is nothing wrong with gays in the military – the military will survive just fine. The only risk is to the politicians who use the the military as a ‘vehicle for social change’. That every time the study was completed exactly ZERO action was taken, namely on the fault of cowardice.
I was a staunch supporter of Levin. I see my warnings were not taken in heed.
The Democrats should have taken this issue up. This proves they have yet to learn their lesson.
No, we must not!If we just let it die, without making an unholy din, we send a clear message to the Democratic party: “We still don’t matter. For all the talk, for all the rhetoric from the blogofear, we still don’t do anything. Walk right over us.”
The simple truth is we don’t matterExcept when they’re looking for money.
And now My 11 O’Clock Number (and it ain’t “Rose’s Turn”)
I absolutely agree!!!!!!!!!!!Our community is rolling over too. We want equality? We want the end to DADT? Then we have to make some NOISE. 80% of Americans want the end to DADT. This is as close as we have ever been to ending DADT, and we are just throwing in the towel. Why should either party fight for us, we don’t even fight for ourselves. Where is the unity and our demand that discrimination will no longer be tolerated regardless of which party holds power?
Make it a pointto give Levin a call tomorrow 202. 224.6221 and let him know how you feel. He needs to hear from all of us LOUD and CLEAR.
Why don’t we ask him? Here is Reid’s number, 202.224.3542. Let’s not go down without a fight!
No wonder I voted for some greens for the 1st time everThis proud Democrat would always vote for the “D” even when they betrayed my values. Those days are ovah! To get my vote you have to earn it.
This election I was proud to say I voted for some greens, and could care less about Dems losing the House. I had no care in the world and felt nothing with the Dems lost the House.
Oh, and I did not give my time making phone calls or walking the precincts as I do every year. Neither did I give my $$$.
As far DADT, there is nothing “controversial” when over 70% of Americans support repeal. There will be continued prices to minority like the President who continues to support discrimination.
who are you?I like your style! :-)
Sometimes you have to make A LOT of noise to get attentionYou are on target T2. That is why I love GetEqual, they are out there making noise. If it wasn’t for them, DADT would not even be an issue for Obama, Senate and Congress.
The so-called “vote” for it the other time was simply a shield for the fac that they want it to stay.
The MINORITY wants DADT to stay.
So why is America’s 1st Black President supporting it? It does not make sense other than to say that he’s probably a homophobe along with the minority in the military.
Repeal DADT now!
2012, Goofy, Daffy all the way. Yeah, its a split ticket and I’ll have to write it in. Why not? I’m pissin’ my vote away as it is.
and yes, DADT repeal is as dead as ENDA and DOMA repeal. and everything else Obama said he was going to do. The health care package? thats on the chopping block and it hasn’t even gone into effect. everything he’s done the repub’s already have the paperwork ready for the first day of congress.
The bus is idling…can’t ya smell the fumes?
May I suggestDan Choi?
It will send a definite message where they lost you.
I know it’ll never happenbut what would happen if the Repub’s introduced a bill that had a planned phaseout of DADT? How many disgruntled Dems would join GOProud or LCR? Just wonderin’ “what if?”…
Horrid thought. You know Australian military….Has been gay-affirming since BEFORE our DADT in Effect. Gay couples now live in military housing! …. and if you marry an Aussie here say in MS you can get full citizienship as a spouse there. Are we the last uncivilized country. Oh, no thats right, NO Military GAYS here along with Russia, SaudiArabia and Yemen.
Yes, but it was LCR’s that got PATRICK MURPHY Defeated!!
The news footageof the Republicans filibustering and bringing the senate to a complete standstill–not once but on issue after issue after issue–would do more to harm their image with the public than anything else I can think of. If the Democrats had a shred of backbone they’d do exactly what you suggest. But they don’t; they’re fierce advocates for abject wimpiness.
I usually find your blogs…
…to be motivating, and the result in some sort of call to action whether it be writing, calling, blogging, e-mailing to friends, a newspaper, a representative, or what have you.
But this has got to be the most demotivating thing I’ve seen in a while. Maybe its just b/c the truth is demotivating.
Still this comes across to me as “Can we admit defeat yet? And don’t forget to blame the Dems on your way out” … I mean I agree that the Dems deserve a lot, a lot, a lot of blame.
I watched that SMU video about pushing to get things rolling again on DADT repeal before Thanksgiving, I was sharing that video, starting to push again, and starting to look into ways to support the judicial efforts too… but seeing Clarknt67 saying its over… that hits hard. =(

Very truemaybe I shouldn’t be giving them any ideas…
Perhaps I’m showing my defeatif Carl Levin is throwing in the towel and the Commander-in-Chief is working against us, and over at Daily Kos, the Democratic base is mostly beating up the gays and making excusese for why this had to be (We lost seats, the gays didn’t vote), yes, I absolutely do feel hopeless.
Sorry to spread it around.
But feel free to pick up the ball I’ve dropped. And maybe I’ll still rally?
If the Democrats aren’t going to push this, then what chance of government shutdown? Why not just have the Republicans write Obama’s agenda and have the Democrats rubberstamp it?
I see you’ve been digesting all of Mitch McConnell’s post-election communiques quite well
Why did Clinton push for DADT and DOMA and why does Obama defend them?
Both laws codifying bigotry got overwhelming support from Congressional Democrats 16 and 14 years ago respectively. Both were signed by Bill Clinton. Clintons insistent and vicious support for DOMA, his haste to sign it and his campaign boasts about signing it were more than just embracing the bigotry he pretended to be against. He was furious at our demands that he keep his word and end military discrimination. DOMA was his payback to the LGBT communities for putting him in a tight spot on DADT.
Mixner and others duped into supporting him were banned from his WH. Clinton bad mouthed our communities and the fight for same sex marriage until quite recently when the polls showed opinion tipping in our direction. Then slick willie reappeared and pretended to apololgize.
The Clintons and their allies created a deep reservoir of homohating bigotry in the Democrat Party. A reservoir that our agenda is drowned in time after time.
One of the foundations of Obama’s campaign was his largely successful attempt to win back catholic and evangelical bigots from the Republicans. He couldn’t have been happy when we constantly put him on the spot for reaching out to bigots like McClurkin. Those who supported Obama should have seen the same resentful attitude surfacing at the tail end of his campaign when he quite consciously sabotaged same sex marriage in California with ‘gawd’s in the mix’. And in his otherwise baffling inaugural invitation to superbigot Warren, his consistent defense of DADT and DOMA and his calculated refusal to champion ENDA.
There’s nothing in the behavior of the Democrats that justifies the delusions that some people still have about their real role in blocking our equality agenda. That’s why so many of deserted them and stayed home or voted left on November 2nd. And it’s why even more of us will do on November 6th, 2012.
Obama Apologists on DailyKOSI have been called a “traitor” and “supporting treason” just by stating that Obama has not supported the LGBT community with action. He supports the hell out of saying “support”. But, always fights against what he “supports”.
At this moment I am still deciding what to do. Voting D for federal offices means nothing because even if my state Reps and Senators support LGBT equality, they are not “supported” by the prez.
Clinton’s “defining moment” was the government shutdownHe insisted on certain things being in the budget. The Republicans refused to fund those. Clinton stood up to the Republican Congress and we went without a budget over Clinton’s principles.
What the hell are Obama’s principles? ”Getting along with the Republicans?”
What is it going to take for Obama to say, “This much and no more”?
Right now it looks like the budget will just get written by Republicans and conservaDems because nothing else gets through.
What news footage? The current form of a filibuster doesn’t bring Senate business to a halt. It’s a Senator saying, “if you attempt to bring that to a vote, I will filibuster it.” Everything else can still happen. McCain (just to name a Senator who threatened filibuster) doesn’t need a cot in the chamber to filibuster. It isn’t Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. The rules changed. Now Senate business can spawn a second, non-filibustered track. Since a filibuster can go on indefinitely without any effort, “filibustered” legislation just gets withdrawn.
In a sense I don’t careand in a sense I do. To some extent Kos is somewhat representative of the Democratic base. I mean, they are not Republicans, the are nominally the folks who “support” “progressive” causes like green energy, climate change legislation, social justice, ending wars. It began as a protest the Iraq war site.
But it’s been morphed into a stomping grounds for OFA. But that unfortunately now is the Democratic base.
So when you peruse those comments and see the people posting that bogus poll showing gays voted 31% for GOP and therefore they deserve to be thrown under the bus, I feel that, no, there won’t be much support from the heterosexual “progressive” community to push back on this.
They take their cues from Obama. If he kicked us it’s because we deserved to be kicked.
Not necessarily. That’s the way it happens, but Reid has the option of forcing a real filibuster by refusing to allow a non-filibustered track. He won’t do it, but he could.
Recognizing the fact that you’ve been defeatedis an essential step in preparing for the next battle. There’s no point to keeping up the fight in this battle when it’s already been lost. Rather than being “demotivating,” it’s simply a matter of facing facts and moving on. Otherwise you end up like John Cleese’s Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, refusing to admit that his arms and legs have been cut off and still wanting to keep up the fight.
Hey, Amanda,if I was wearing one of your jerseys, would it be so long that you couldn’t kiss my backside?
Yes, the rules changed. That means they can change again. Reid doesn’t have the gumption to force the republicans to put their true colors on display. Hey, there’s a vicious dog chewing my leg off. Maybe if I make nice with him, he’ll stop.
I disagreedepending on what you mean by lost.
We win when we get our issues debated.
You have to fight for principle, even if you go down in the first vote or in the last vote.
The debate process can expose people who are hypocrites, too.
Wait a minute. You mean that isn’t what’s been happening for the last two years?
Yes, but there will always be another debate. That’s the nature of American politics. So why prolong this one? Beating a dead horse won’t make it run.
Levin sucksFor those of you who want to contact Levin, don’t waste your time and anger. I’m a Michigander and have written, faxed, emailed and called about DADT for I don’t know how long and the boilerplate response is
–we’re at war
–we do what the military needs
–I wait for the President’s leadership
–blah, blah, blah
It’s pointless. He doesn’t care. He also doesn’t get my vote.
A plague on both their houses.
I agreeAnd see below about Levin specifically.
What is the point of…the power of agenda, if you don’t use it to bring the debate?
UgWhat a bunch of horseshit.
“Happy Warrior’ that I am, I’m going to send him a note, anyway. Thanks for the heads up. Now I know what to put in it.
