crossposted on Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters
Well the 2010 midterms have come and gone and as expected, it wasn't pretty.
Democrats lost the House thanks to the infusion of the tea party movement, but managed to keep the Senate thanks to the same circumstances.
Now some of my fellow progressives may feel a bit discouraged but I don't. I was there when the Democrats won big in 2006 and 2008 but personally for me, there was no bigger thrill than last night. This entire election had us as the underdogs and speculation was that we were going to sit it out, but we didn't. We roared as well as we could and fought with a hell of a lot of determination. And though Republicans came out as the victors in the House, I don't necessarily feel like a loser. I feel like wounded warrior who just ended a long, bloody siege, battered, bruised, but ready to fight again. I don't feel that me or anyone on my side of the spectrum has anything to be ashamed about.
Now I know the pundits and bloggers will spin the results for weeks to come while the Republicans and tea partiers will gloat like crazy and hold their noses so high up in the air that they won't be able to smell their own mouthwash.
Meanwhile, Democrats and some of us progressives will either be discouraged (or pretend to be discouraged so as not to ruin the Washington insiders' narrative of a “disheartened Democratic party.”)
As for me, I refuse to be disheartened or frustrated. I see positives with what happened on Tuesday. As a matter of fact, I have five good reasons why I am glad the Republicans achieved such a great victory.
5. Let's be honest. Speaker of the House is a job I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy because the person who holds the job becomes so polarizing. Just ask Newt Gingrich, Bob Livingston (who resigned before he even got to hold the gavel), Jim Wright, or the new victim of the curse, Nancy Pelosi. Heck, the only reason why Dennis Hastert survived is because no one remembered who he was when he held the job.
Also I bet many of you are like me, wetting your lips in anticipation of constantly mispronouncing possibly soon-to-be Speaker of the House John Boehner's last name in a psuedo accidental, but deliciously naughty way. Plus you just gotta love the way that man cries. It's like Christina Aguilera when she wins a Grammy.
4. If the recent Politico article is to be believed, Republicans are scared of the fact that Sarah Palin doesn't think of herself as a cheerleader, but a serious presidential candidate. Not only are they scared of it, but they aim to stop it, which should make excellent, popcorn consuming viewing. But unfortunately, it also demonstrates the lack of finesse on the behalf of the Republican Party. Not only are you supposed to wait until after the election to get rid of her, but maybe it wasn't a good idea to trot our your plan in front of God and Man alike.
And then Sen. Jim DeMint, for whatever reason, has decided to pit the newly elected Republican senators against the so-called Republican establishment. My suggestion to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is that he stop trying to make Obama a one-term president and watch his own tush. If he looked behind him, he would see DeMint with a napkin bib, knife, and fork.So much for unity.
I swear if the Republicans worked for that James Bond villain who constantly strokes his Persian cat (Ernst Stavro Blofeld), he would have dropped them all in the pirahna tank for incompetence.
3. Speaking of which, some Republicans are in big trouble with a certain mastermind of the party. When Christine O'Donnell won the Delaware Republican primary, Karl Rove was the voice of reason (proving how weird this mid-term election was) by calling her unelectable. When he was turned on by his fellow conservatives, he backtracked. Then he said something suitably negative about the mentality of the tea party, causing Rush Limbaugh to call him out. Then he said something unsuitable about Sarah Palin being presidential material and she called him out.
Now that the mid-term election is over and he turned out to be correct on O'Donnell, I have a feeling that Rove may answer back in a manner suiting his reputation. I'm serious here, guys. I wouldn't mess with Rove even if I had a crucifix, holy water, and garlic.
2. Now that the Republicans have Congress, they can now reveal that incredibly, wonderful master plan to cut taxes, bring down the deficit, and increase the work force. Apparently the plan is so awesome that none of them wanted to reveal it to the media or each other.
Whatever it is, I only give them six months to complete it. Hey, if they expected President Obama to clean up a mess in less than two years that former President Bush made in eight, then fair is fair. But remember, keep your government out of Medicare.
1. And finally, the tea party, the American patriots, the ones who led the charge and defeated the socialist, Kenyasian, Islamic, un-American, European plans of President Obama (which I heard was worse than the plans by Darth Vader, Sauron, and those ugly things from the movie Independence Day) dead in its tricks. I have a few request for the tea party. Can you all stop crying about how “you want your country back.” And also can you please, please stop bringing guns to Presidential speeches. And above all no more of those annoying signs making fun of the President's racial heritage, but “aren't meant to be racist.”
Really though to the victors goes the spoils and I am sure you will reap them all, including possibly Time magazine's Persons of the Year. And that reminds me – do you know who else got that Time magazine designation? Hitler. (Sorry about that. Had to throw a little Glenn Beck in the mix.)
Seriously though guys, while you are feeling like the victors in your pseudo American Revolutionary War fantasies, I have two words for you – Scott Brown.
Remember the Senator from Massachusetts whose election you rallied behind because you were so sure that he would defeat “Obamacare?” Well he won and you danced in the streets. But then the healthcare bill passed and not only did Brown vote with Obama's party on a jobs bill, but he deserted you all like a prom date dumped before the last dance.
Remember how that felt? Expect to feel it a lot from other Republicans whom you helped into office.
But basically no one should read too much into this election.Don't forget that the record mid-term losses in the House is 71 seats and that's held by Franklin Roosevelt. And we know how he turned out.
Also, remember when President Obama was first elected and the pundits were asking is it the beginning of a “post-racial America?” We should have known that this was nonsense because the majority make up of pundits asking these questions were white. And that didn't change. If America became “post-racial,” this characteristic certainly didn't strike the country's newsrooms.
Proving yet again that elections are the mothers of bad hyperbole.
The key is to not overanalyze this election's results and don't get discou
raged. Two years in Washington is like three lifetimes. We have only just begun to have fun.

Don’t overlookThe fact that The Daily Show and Rachel Maddow will continue to have plenty of wonderful material to work with…..
But seriously. If the Democrats had kept control, the whole Tea Party and GOP “Just Say Crap” movements would have escalated beyond belief for the 2012 elections.
If you thing that the LGBT community has been discouraged and feels betrayed by the Obama administration, just wait to see the rank and file Tea Party reaction when their wingnut Fat Cats can’t achieve a damn thing – and most of them won’t even be trying. It may take some of that “2nd Amendment Solutions” BS and aim it in a different direction.
The Tea Party elected officials will now get to explain to THEIR base why they didn’t sweep in, eliminate taxes, shrink the government, and rescue the economy by Easter.
Now the Republicans have to produceSomething, anything, beyond the platitudes
One thing I didn’t predict….Look, Federally the GOP can do little damage. They won’t get anything past the senate.
But at the state level…
MT House – Meh
NH House – Goodbye same sex marriage, probably before Feb.
NH Senate
IN House (already controlled Senate)
PA House (already controlled Senate)
NC House
NC Senate
AL House
AL Senate
MI House (already controlled Senate)
OH House (already controlled Senate)
ME Senate – Meh
IA House – Meh
WI Assembly
WI Senate
They can, and in NH definitely will, repeal past gains. The state-level ENDAs for example.
Yeah“Two years in Washington is like three lifetimes. We have only just begun to have fun.”
Unless you have AIDS and a partner who is not a US citizen. I don’t consider this fun. You’ll pardon me for not visiting these worthless blogs anymore. I have a life to lead for however long that I have left.
Powerless, ineffective gays.
What they will produce is more tax cuts for the wealthyThe bill for which (about $720 billion) will be sent to the first-graders and toddlers of the country.
The Orange Man has to make his tee-time. He’ll just phone in the tough decisions.
I can’t help it if Rep. Boehner can’t properly pronounce his nameLook. This is from the party that has already given us “Dick” Nixon and “Dick Armey” (the latter knowing well enough to make a crack about his own name in a crude comment about Barney Frank and a dick army).
Now we have a Boehner, properly pronounced as if it were Bo – ner, with a long “o” sound. It’s a homonym for a mistake, or for a, um, turgid prong. Either way, the man is just another “Dick.”
It will be interesting – and his first name is the common term for the patron of a prostitute.
It’s people with names like this that make me wonder whether reality is really someone’s weird dream.
I find it utterly hilarious that you guys are disheartenedWhy, for the last couple of months or more than a year, the gay blogging association of Spaulding, Aravois and Savage were seriously insulting and denigrating the ‘weak and spineless’ DNC. What didnt they say? Then the so called closing of the gayTM occured. Activists groups ignored the tea party monsters and were protesting our allies and calling them cowards. We roasted and lambasted the HRC(although that they deserved). And now that the reality of all that negativity has come full circle, we are upset that the GOP won back control. Wow just wow. It felt good to foot stomp and whine right. It felt good to create a feeling of failure and disillusionment in our community….well now I want to read wat you will say once Daddy Mccain and friends get started on this country and our rights. SEE HOW FAR DADT, ENDA AND DOMA WILL GET TO. See how much progress will be made in the next two years and lets see if Obamastration was really the ‘disappointment’ you thought.
The NC House and Senatewill now move towards a marriage ammendment and will now declare war on the Hispanic population with an SB1070 like law.
Hey SillymeSEE HOW FAR DADT, ENDA AND DOMA WILL GET TO.
——————————-
Ummm, even with the Dems in power nothing really happened with DADT(deemed unconstitutional but the Dems want to wait for the study), ENDA(dates promised…nothing happened) or DOMA(on it’s way to SCOTUS where it needed to go). Hell the UAFA bill wasn’t even mentioned so I’m not sure what youre crowing about!
The Dems ARE spineless cowards and I find it utterly hilarious that you think otherwise.
YOU GO SILLY ME! TELL ‘EM HONEY!!!This post is PRICELESS! JUST PRICELESS! YOU MADE MY DAY!
NC is mourning
This was by far the worst news for us in the Tar Heel state. I’m sure Maggie and NOM are already booking their bus tour stops (in between popping champagne), since a Democratic legislature was the only thing keeping us as the only Southern state without a “marriage” amendment.
PSIt also means that one of the “Purplest” states in the nation, which was trending Blue, will be at the mercy of some very RED hands when it comes to redistricting. Really, really bad timing.
Accomplishment vs. SnarkingI’m not happy. It’s a tragedy for the country. And I’m not at all certain that we haven’t already passed the tipping point where we can’t really fix the country–at least not without some kind of “Russia in the 90s” experience.
Yes, we can snark at them fighting. But what the election means is that there will be absolutely no further progressive legislation coming out of the Obama presidency. What we had with those majorities was already below what I think of as minimal to keep the US afloat long term. But we are now going to mark time until 2012 or 2016.
But we’re not fixing anything and that’s just not good enough.
and while we’re waiting for that….the democrats have to start up a noise machine of their own, ASAP, where they TRASH the republicans 24/7. the rethugs were already in full swing on this day 2 years ago.
the democrats are the weaklings to the republicans bullies. the bullies aren’t smart, or even that strong–they’re only loud and persistent. and really easy to take down. will it happen? will pigs fly?
Uh, no sweetieme
The Obama Administration dismantled their grassroots connections (or folded what they had up into the Dem Party apparatus) and the Administration DID NOT RESPOND to the Tea Partiers.
Put the blame on that specific point where it lies and that’s with the Obama Administration and the Democrats.
Poor ReasoningObviously, if bloggers had not held the Democrats accountable for not fulfilling their promises to the GLBT community, then voters would have ignored a 10% overall unemployment rate (and a 16% unemployment rate for African-Americans) and would have rushed to vote for Democrats. Yeah, I believe that.
Shit, this was going to happenYes, the Dems were going to suffer losses in the midterms, regardless; Obama and the Dems didn’t have a three year head start on economic conditions (like FDR did).
Thing is, Obama’s doesn’t have the advantage to come back from this as Bill Clinton had.
REDISTRICTING!All of these now republican controlled legislatures will be stuck with districts draw by republicans. This is the true tragedy. The only reason Indiana does not have a DOMA is because of Democratic chairman, we are now doomed to republican control. A DOMA will follow.
I didn’t see any of that in Alvin’s blog post.Alvin’s blog wasn’t whining about Dems losing at all. It was about opportunity. Gridlock will not allow anything meaningful to happen in either direction for the next 2 years (at least). Just relax, chill a bit with the adult beverage of your choice, sillyme, and clear your head about it.
We now have an enemy to motivate the base and “purify” the allies. What’s not to like?
Obama is our ally. We should have supported himLook it sucks. It hurts unbeliveably that i have to tell my kid that her mommy cannot get married. It hurts that i cannot claim benefits for my child for her care and upkeep because im gay. It does. Many of us face terrible challenges and horrible situations every hour of everyday that reminds us of our second class citizenship. We need to fight for our rights. It doesnt matter how PC the media is…people have a healthy and robust antagonism for us. Which is why we need to keep our allies close to us. Many of us said HRC played politics but think about it…gays are a minority and not a well respected one like the blacks or latinos. We cannot just stomp and into the White House and chain our selves to the fence till we get our rights(Dan choi side eye). We need to play the politics game because whether we like it or not that is the only way we can win this. We should have trusted Obama and his administration. He was and is doing his best..i really believe that. I mean why the hell do you think the repugs won? The economy sure, but look at the comments of the GOP…’radical activist, homosexual loving muslim president, etc’ they were playing on the racist, homophobic sentiment in many americans. I mean even if you are not racist you can still hate the gays nowadays. We should have stuck together and motivated our allies to push the dems to a victory. You cannot do this by spending 23months and 23 hours of a two year administration bashing your allies. I read somewhere the dems have the highest registered voters in america so why did the repugs win??? We need to grow up here and start thinking like adults. I say no more democrat bashing. Lets stand by our allies and trust our rights will come. Im talking from 2012. Because u can be sure our rights will not go anywhere for the next two years
Uh, unless FDR took office in 1931….
….he had no more time than Obama did, and yet the Dems ADDED seats to their majority in the House and Senate in his 1934 first midterm…despite, I believe, higher unemployment and his own demonizing versions of the Tea Party and Beck/Limbaugh.
Thing is, Obama doesn’t have the advantage of FDR’s abilities [though he would lose votes in future elections].
And as GIGANTIC as Clinton’s ego is, HE had the ability to redirect his sails to end up getting reelected, survive an impeachment attempt, and leave office with the highest approval ratings of any President in decades.
I will be surprised if Obama is in enough control of his own ego to do that.
Let’s seeDeval Patrick won reelection against a pro-equality (for GLB’s that is) Republican, Gov. Moonbeam won, Andrew Cuomo won…
Let’s look at where the wins and losses took place before you go bashing the ungrateful gays.
TRANSLATION OF ALVIN’S HAPPY TALK…
…about why we should CELEBRATE gridlock on everything and even the FANTASY of LGBT progress for AT LEAST two more yearsBlowing through all that hot air…including his choosing NOT to mention that in FDR’s first midterm he ADDED seats in BOTH houses of Congress…including the biggest Dem Senate margin IN US HISOTORY…and the spin that the Tea Party beat Barry when Barry beat himself [though they'd luv to agree]…Alvin has ONE message…the same singular message he has ALWAYS had…tho some of the details have changed since this was recorded:
How much worse was it for FDR?
The unemployment rate in 1934…his first midterm when he still managed to save both houses… was 21.7%.
Michael, s’il vous plaitThe Wall Street Crash happened in 1929 and the economy was bottoming out by the time Roosevelt was elected in 1932. That wasn’t true in Obama’s case.
Plus you had 12 years of Republican Administrations prior to the 1932 election.
(Yes, FDR had higher…much higher unemployment rates when he took office that he dealt with).
(Also…and I wonder about this, I know that FDR left the economy in Hoover’s hands pretty much between his 1932 election and his March 1933 inauguration …granted that may have not been feasible to Obama because of the the time frame between election and inauguration).
The advantage that Clinton had that Obama doesn’t have is “the economy, stupid.”
But how long had the Depression been going on, Michael?and actually, unemployment at that point in FDR’s administration was actually down (and this has been Obama’s big mistake all along…he never should have allowed the Congress to spend a year on putting together health care).
I don’t think this is funny.
Here’s the unemployment stats from the 20′s and 30′s
1920 5.2 %
1928 4.2
1930 8.7
1932 23.6
1934 21.7
1936 16.9
1938 19.0
1940 14.6
And how many seats did FDR lose in the 1938 midterms?
I’ll give you a hint; it was more than the Democrats lost last night.
KarmaFrankly, the Dems in the House did this to themselves. Didn’t Pelose say they weren’t going to take on any controversial bills (translate LGBT bills)? I see this election a form of karma for them promising stuff and then going back on their promises.
I wish someone would give Boehner a reality check. A majority in the House don’t mean shit. They can draft all the hateful bills they want, but they still have to go through an ineffective Senate and Obama, with his new box of veto pens. Frodo had it easier going into Mordor. We will see nothing from our government for the next two years, except a lot more vacation time for the President and Congress members.
“Trust our rights will come”Really………that’s how politics works? How about holding Democrats responsible and pressuring them to vote for LGBT rights with our allies? Wasn’t this what Harvey Milk did? ”Trust” in politics doesn’t get you very far and is seen by many politicians as weakness. Republicans demand that their politicians forward their agenda. Republicans appear to be strong leaders, Democrats weak. You could kick sand in their faces and they’d still talk about compromising. People have no respect for wimps. And as far as the Obama admin doing their “best”- well, what about the DOJ continuing to appeal DADT and DOMA while letting a xian campus preaching/proselytizing case stand? If this is their best, flying spaghetti monster help us.
Exactly…The LGBT community is blamed and portrayed as powerful when convenient….yet we can’t get LGBT legislation passed.
I totally agree! You are absolutely right, Brenda. For far too long a minority of vocal gays and progressives did all of the heavy lifting. To borrow an Obama metaphor, this active minority has been pushing the car that the conservatives drove into the ditch. However, it wasn’t just the Republicans standing on the side of the road sipping a slurpie, it was lazy Democrats too.
The American progressive movement will now have an opportunity to sample what lies in store for them should they decide to stay sitting on their ass and bitching instead of making phone calls, writing letters, sending emails, visiting legislative offices, and changing minds one-on-one at work, home, and maybe even at church.
Couldn’t agree with you moreWhen the majority of the American public believes that you should repeal DADT, why then don’t you vote to do so? Wouldn’t this gain you political capital?
Barely a drop in an ocean of unemployment…
It had gone down only 3.3% from 1933.
With more than one 1 of 5 American workers STILL out of a job in 1934 versus slightly less than 1 out of 10 being out of work now….or, put another way, “radical” FDR won big against still much bigger negatives while “radical” Obama lost with smaller negatives….the historians’ conclusion remains the same:
Put more bluntly…whatever the outside factors, it came down to the fact Obama didn’t have what it takes, and there’s no evidence that, unlike Clinton after ’94 and Truman after ’46, he’ll regain any of the ground lost.
Those Bots, gay and nongay, still wanting to give him just one more chance are accomplishing nothing but assuring a Repug elected President in 2012.
I’m sorry for your situation and thank you for the shot of reality.I agree that there’s nothing fun about fighting for your life. There’s nothing fun about fighting corporate-funded bigots. There’s nothing fun about the death of democracy.
The people for whom politics is a game are pathetic at best and amoral idiots at worst.
Despite the current happy talk du jour, your situation will not get better. Worse, we have all failed to make it better. I can only repeat that I’m very sorry.
S’il vous plait….
…you don’t get that you’re making the same case I am…FDR’s personal abilities enabled him to turn around MUCH bigger, much longer lasting economic despair [than the actual numbers] and attempts to demonize him [as you know, some Repugs STILL hate "Roosevelt"] while Obama couldn’t turn around the despair and animosity that has existed for a much shorter period of time and while unemployment numbers are less than half what they still were in 1934.
It’s the *PERSONALITY, stupid, [and, by that, I don't mean you].
[*in its colloquial sense, as well as political skills, ability to rise above criticism, etc. Maybe FDR complained, too, that critics...and the Repugs called him "That man in the White House" or "that man," refusing to even say his name...didn't understand how much he'd accomplished...but it's hard for me to imagine that it came off like "whining" as Obama's does. In the same way he was a master at defining his enemies, even mocking them, without seeming mean. Obama either refuses to answer them entirely or, the rare times he does try, sounds merely combative.]
And how much did FDR accomplish in the two years of Dem control of Congress that he singlehandedly salvaged?
I’ll give you a hint: a lot more than what Obama is going to accomplish in the next two years.
We agree on the long lasting part…
I mean, unemployment jumped 15% between 1930 and 1932.
The unemployment rate has risen since Obama was elected. The economy hadn’t bottomed out as it had for FDR (granted, FDR also started putting people to work).
The Great Depression had already bottomed out by the time Roosevelt took office, in other words.
I also agree with you that FDR did not allow his enemies (well, other than Huey Long) to define him as Obama has (and he’s never really answered it).
Well…FDR always enjoyed big Democratic majorities (even after thye 1938 midterms).
I feel as if hard realities are arriving thick and fast……but evidently, some folks need a larger dose than others.
Apparently you live in a country in which blacks and Latinos are well-respected. Where is it? I’d like to move there.
Why is Glenn Beck the hottest media personality…and why are CNN and other news outlets trying to become more and more like Fox? Oh, right: because the media are too politically-correct.
We don’t sit and wait for our rights to come and fall like, uh, rain (or other, less pleasant effluents)
We have to demand them, and then work like hell to make it happen.
By the wayAll I’m trying to (ahem!) limn out is that, yes, there were (and are) similarities with the situations for FDR and Obama but there are also differences (myself, I wondered then and wonder now if FDR leaving Hoover with that mess between the election and the Inauguration was one of the smartest things that FDR did politically…I’m not certain whether the same option would have been feasible for Obama to even attempt).
Alvin’s right…The quickest way to take the wind out of the Tea Party’s sails was to get them in office so that their supporters can finally see that they were sold a load of crap…
…at least the non-racist baggers who bought into the term limits and lower taxes b.s..
…of course the racist baggers are going to be perfectly happy that priority number one for the TP is not the economy, but rather to get the black family out of the White House.
Bedwell/Kevinchi or Kevinchi/Bedwell 2012
I second diablorobotico’s sentimentsWe must never forget how politics affect the everyday life of all of us. This is why I feel so disheartened today despite knowing what the outcomes would probably be.
Child, please, I don’t want that jobAnd of course, in all of the midterms after the 1934 midterms, FDR’s Democrats leaked like sieve including in 1942.
You are kidding right..right???Blacks and latinos have political power in this country. Im too tired so why dont you google that up yourself and see. Anyhoo, its time we left the reactive gays behind and get proactive…GETEQUAL is a great initiative. But maybe if they tried to actually humiliate the anti gay bigots they would be doing more good. People need a mind change. Its not by blasting our allies…that is such a ridiculous thing to do. Its like me seeing the Klan burning crosses in my backyard and running to the NAACP to hold a protest…really?? What the hell have i achieved? How about finding the Klan grand puber or whatever and lighting his own backyard up with everything from fire to the press. Expose his butt and bring him untold humiliation and make him lose credibility. Thats how you fight back. You hit the enemy and help your allies. But of course, some of us are too bitter.John Aravois is busy theorising and reading up what the President should have done or could have done. We should just let that guy rule America for a week and see if theory plays true in real life. The worse part is we the disheartened are eating all that nonsense up.
We need to lead our own rights to victory. By all means call the Dems on their failures but this 24/7 bashing war should stop. This lesbian is not buying it anymore, you guys should wise up and fight back against other gays that are creating a divide in our community
“Ally”?I don’t think that means what you think it means.
To most of us, an “ally” isn’t someone who opposes even wildly-popular moves towards equality. An “ally” isn’t someone who has the OPM ignore court orders in order to shut us out of health coverage. An “ally” isn’t someone who has the DoJ use the most vicious bits of slander available to defend indefensible laws.
LOL!
I already have a photo of myself sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office [from when Carter was Prez and not out gay Special Assistant Midge Constanza invited my roommate Leonard Matlovich for a private tour and I was his plus one]. But, troll that I am, I don’t publish it. But here’s Mat. Carter REALLY should have left her father’s “The buck stops here” sign that Margaret Truman gave him when he went back to Georgia. I can think of at least one POTUS who needs reminding.
I took a second private Midge tour with Eartha, and we ate in the White House employees mess. Alas, no pix from that.
Now, Kev, you KNOW we could AT LEAST decorate if not tear up the place politically.
How about Chief of Staff? I could be Jim Messina to your Rahmbo Emanuel [under a different POTUS, of course, so to speak]. I know, I know….I just threw up a little in my mouth, too, just having to type their names.
Oh, Gawd forgot to give me the decorating geneSo the decorating is on you.
I’m more the Leon Panetta type although…
HA!
You should have seen Leonard’s idea of decorating. And he didn’t know Grand Opera from Grand Ole Opry. And got a kick out of mortifying A-Gays by asking for ketchup for his steak whenever they were too puffed up by being seen in a la de dah restaurant with Mr. Time Cover.
Democrats lost 58 seats in the House because Obama and the Congress screwed up. It wasn’t a midterm ‘correction’; it was a well deserved drubbing.
They lost because Obama and the Congress continue to prosecute wars in Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Those wars are very costly above all in terms of the lives of dead and wounded GIs and those of tens of thousands more muslim civilians.
They lost because Obama and the Congress continue be lap dogs for the looter classes and refuse to take back the trillions given the rich in the largest criminal transfer of wealth in human history. That money could be used to simultaneously end unemployment and green the economy and infrastructure, a plan bitterly opposed by Obama, the Congress and their owners on Wall Street.
They lost because Obama and the Congress continue to pander to bigots, immigrant bashing racists and companies like BP and Haliburton who have a green light to continue polluting the atmosphere and oceans in an environment already dangerously out of balance.
The Democrats lost because they deserved to lose, but the real losers here are workers, GLBT folks and GIs. For most, the coming two years will be another lesson in the utter futility of lesser evilism. They’ll find out that Republicans really are as bad as Democrats and within months GOP polling numbers will begin to plummet, as well Obama’s, who’ll inevitably follow their lead.
They’ll be no more change this time around than there was from the elections of 1994, 2006 and 2008. The wars go on and on, the rich get richer with the help of both parties and young GLBT people continue to die at the hands of murderers and hate mongering bigots who oppose our agenda.
Me three! This GOP tidal wave is going to swamp us all!
Look for these GOP-led legislatures and state houses to start a massive war on the poor! Cuts in heating programs, housing assistance, Medicaid, food assistance, county health clinics, etcetera. Welfare for the rich will continue as usual…
Thanks for the reminder, Alvin……as to why I never, ever read your pretentious and never-insightful posts.
That was sillyMichael, that was kinda juvenile. Disagree with me all you want, but let’s not make things personal.
Thank you for not reading that one, I guess, but . .You must have read enough of it to give me such a sterling critique ;p
Oh, Michael, pleasefor the record, I do think that FDR handled things better than Obama (that’s part of the reason the unemployment rate dropped) but to say that FDR and the Dems didn’t benefit from 3+ years of exponentially rising unemployment under Hoover is ridiculous.
That’s what gave the Dems the headwind when the Dems got handed their ass in 1938 (they lost 78 seats).
Obama’s already indicated not repealing tax cuts for the wealthy…in the spirit of ‘cooperation’ with the new House.
Meanwhile, the new majority is already talking of preparing subpoenas for just about everyone in his administration.
FDR accomplished more in his first 100 days than Obama ever dreamed ofObama’s true failure is one of imagination.
Sure, he surrounded himself with corporate toadies. Sure, he held secret behind-closed-doors meetings after promising that he wouldn’t. Sure, he capitulated to every little want that any Republican came up with.
The real problem is that while FDR dreamed big (to the point of threatening to pack the SCOTUS), Obama never had any dreams.
Looks like 2016 and a new Democrat who may have a New New Deal. Otherwise, we’re screwn.
those were the good old daysAnd there’s a Broadway metaphor for that, courtesy of “Damn Yankees.” John (Man of Color) Boehner in the 2010 revival. A timely song and dance for you in a new Congress, that, let’s face it, may put on the best song and dance since George Murphy.

Two words: Personal ResponsibilityThe Republicans crowed on and on about personal responsibility during the campaign. I think we should support them.
When they vote against the interests of the American people, hold them personally responsible. Leverage the sensationalism-loving media just as the Republicans did while the Democrats mismanaged their bills the past two years.
Show the homeless, the sick, the newly unemployed, the victims of war, the bankrolls of the front groups, show it all.
When they insert boondoggles into bills to benefit their districts, hold them personally responsible. Mae a big stink and always show that clip of them talking about smaller government when they want to use federal dollars to build a fish farm in the middle of a desert or keep an unneeded military base open or fund unwanted military programs.
Hold them responsible at their offices. Hold them responsible at the legislative/executive sessions. Hold them responsible at campaign appearances.
Frankly, if they hold up their promises (balanced budget without cutting anything from their districts while lowering taxes, while spurring the private sector to invest $150+ billion indefinitely in new jobs, while avoiding disasters while deregulating industries, while stabilizing Social Security and Medicare without raising taxes or cutting spending, while reducing healthcare spending), they deserve to be re-elected, regardless of their party. That’d be a major miracle.
