There’s no correlation between inacceptance of homosexuality and depression and suicide,” he says.
Rather, Perkins says, there is another factor that leads kids to kill themselves.
“These young people who identify as gay or lesbian, we know from the social science that they have a higher propensity to depression or suicide because of that internal conflict.”
Homosexuality is “abnormal,” he says, and kids know it, which leads them to despair. That’s why he wants to confront gay activism in public schools. For example, his group supports the Day of Truth, when Christian high schoolers make their case that homosexuality is a sin.
He spewed this on NPR. Why did it put this man on the air?

Tony Perkins knows that he lied and I think I can prove itI saw that and I am working on a post I think can prove that Perkins knowingly told a lie.
My comment on NPRWhy is NPR giving airtime to a known hate-monger such as Tony Perkins? Don’t you know his organization is on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s hate group list?
You wouldn’t bring on the Imperial Wizard of the KKK to discuss race relations would you? This equates to the same thing. If you don’t see it, it’s because your heterocentrism is in the way.

I don’t agree with everything in Dobson’s book, but he does talk about the impact of a parent’s acceptance affects a child’s self esteem and how that child’s self esteem affects issues such as drug and alcohol use, suicide, etc and I believe there is a lot of truth to that.
So now imagine, starting at around 7 or 8 years old, you start to realize that you have some developing infatuation with men. You don’t understand it, but its there. Around the same age you begin to learn what gay is, hear your parents, your church, your friends speak ill of it, make fun of it, etc.
You begin to put two and two together. Wonder if you could be gay. So you conclude that you have to hide this dark secret. For the next 10 years or so, essentially the rest of your childhood, you hold this secret knowing that God has already rejected you and if the secret gets out your friends, your church, and even your own parents might reject you.
Tony, can you imagine going through your entire adolescence with this fear in the back of your mind that if your parents only knew the truth about you they will class you with the scum of the earth? It is something that is there in your mind every day, every minute. There is no escape. Regardless of where you are and what you do, you never escape the fact that you have to hide this secret to keep your life from being ruined in a very real sense.
Do you know how many gay kids grow up like this? Do you know what it does to their self esteem? And then there are higher rates of suicide, drug use, alcohol use, etc among gay kids. Duh! And you say its because they know they are abnormal?
People like you are party to keeping these children growing up in that hell. You do and say a lot of very evil things Tony. My personal opinion is that this is the most evil of all.
It’s not just that.By NPR giving this guy a platform to speak his hate…they are contributing and condoning the pervasive shunning and dehumanization of LGBT people. No wonder kids are offing themselves. NPR shame. (I couldn’t find where to comment to them.)

Even IF it were true that something about being gay made one more likely to be subject to suicidal depression, there is no frigging way that the appropriate response is telling them it is a sin and they are going to hell.
What exactly does he think it is that the social science says is the reason for that depression and suicide? The non-acceptance of homosexuality!

What exactly are Perkin’s psych credentials?because if he has none, then NPR may be liable if anything untoward results from Perkins’ ignorant and unscientific pontifications.

The only reason this happens is because we don’t make a stinkI’ve been thinking about this a bit. The only reason why Peter Sprigg and Tony Perkins gets away with being a “voice” is because we don’t make a BIG STINK about it. Think about it. The squeeky wheel gets the grease. And in this case, we need to be very loud and very clear as to why we are pissed. Heck we’ve got more proof of their lies than I don’t know what.
