“I just got done welcoming Sarah Palin to our County. Had a nice chat and gave her a pair of pink underwear.” — Sheriff Joe Arpaio http://twitpic.com/2zw5gn
It probably is real, and it is messed up, but…possibly not in the way it seems. Doesn’t Joe the Jingoist make his
largely-illegally incarcerated, working-class, unable-to-buy-their-way-out-from-under-the-law-the-way-the-oligarchs-and-their-snotnosed-kids-can serfsprisoners wear all pink? If so, perhaps its just a souvenir of The Law According to Joe (perhaps the underwear was even signed by Glen Campbell while he was a Guest o’ Joe? Like a Rhinestone Maverick…).Again – I agree that its sick, but possibly in a Maricopa-County-is-one-step-away-from-slavery sense, not the dirty-old-man-that-he-probably-is sense.
It certainly sounds likesomething Joe would do.
It is a disgusting tocsinof his humiliation of immigration detainees, some of whom are legal and simply do not have their paper equivilants of the yellow star of david to denote them “legal”
Simply speaking Spanish is probable cause to demand papers, btw–proved that myself a few months ago.
Yuppers, Sarah, you have a real souvenier of the kind of America you support….gangsters holding the keys and terrorising minorities….beware when we Espanolas/Latinas outnumber you, Senora Cochina.
Brain-envy Little Joe will go to his grave [none too soon]….
…psychopathically bitter than he never came of age in 1932………….in Berlin.
I sure hopethat pink underwear wasn’t made of mixed fibers. We wouldn’t want Sarah to commit an abomination in the eyes of the Lord, would we?
what homophobia?making inmates wear pink underwear, considering the current cultural connection of pink with girls, is his symbolic way of attempting to emasculate male prisoners. why am i not surprised that he operates with a teenager’s sensibility of bullying and humiliation?
When I read the title of thisI said “No way!!” You can’t give me the crreeeps. It’s the GOP, I’m bracing myself. Yep, gave me the creeps. The only thing that’s going to make me feel better is to contribute $20 to Patrick Murphy.

Correct.Joe makes all prisoners wear pink underwear in the male prisons (white for the women). Not all pink, just the underwear. The rest is orange with black and white stripes.
It is meant to utilize inherent homophobia in an effort to “make no one want to go there”.
He routinely gives celebrty politicians pink underwear as a token of their visit.
So it’s not a nasty deal, it’s him being his usual spotlight craving and anti-human self.
Sheriff Joe is an American HeroThis country needs 100,000 more like him. The pink undies are a response to prisoners stealing undies, it helps keep track of stuff. The rest of the clothes are pink for the same reason, and because pink is a calming color. I am fond of the guy for reinstituting chain gangs so that the rapists and thieves have something to do while staying in the housing the taxpayers provide them. He also eliminated alot of the pampering prisoners get like tobacco and pornography, its a jail not a five star resort.
Those that call him a fascist have no idea what a fascist is. Joe is an inspiration for law enforcement officers everywhere.
Of course we need to crack down on all the criminals –And we can’t be bothering with making sure those damn lazy poor people that the rich depend on for a living actually have adequate representation — that would just give them ideas above their station! It’s much better to have thousands of wrongly accused people and tens of thousands of people with sentences out of proportion to their crime providing forced labor for corporate profit — and as long as we sprinkle in some actual criminals, we can claim that those are the actual focus of our violent authoritarian mini-state!
Who?Who are these tens of thousands of innocents who languish in out dungeons because rich people want to oppress them?
Every time some animal murders a transgendered person this site is up in arms over the soft justice system, but whenever not talking about bias crimes, people go back to the whole “jail exists to oppress poor people” mentality that has no connection to the real world.
Damn right prisoners should work, we pay for their food, shelter, clothing, legal representation, and the guards. The least they can do is clean a highway, its not like they will ever actually repay society for all the money they sucked from it.
I have my suspicionsGiven the archaic right-wing take on gender and sexuality, and the association of pink with socially constructed femininity – Joe probably thinks he’s endowing Snowbilly with vital crotch armor against Teh Eevil Lezbyun Conspiracy!!!
You profit from the prisoners.Prison in the U.S. functions as a continual threat — stay in line, keep boosting the wealth or your betters, or we’ll lock you up. Anyone not in poverty is profiting from the existence of the prison system — and anyone white is profiting from disproportionate sentencing for anyone who isn’t white. (For violations of the law generally, and for non-violent drug use and possession violations in particular, the more money you have and the whiter you are the more leniently the system treats you.) The prison system as it exists has the function of enforcing racism and classism. (One must also ask why we have so many more prisoners than countries with comparable levels of poverty and crime…though I don’t suppose a screw-the-poor conservative would consider our out-of-control wealth disparity to be a factor.)
I can’t resist…I am just glad he wasn’t gloating about giving her a pink sock.
(Don’t google it.)
And again …… the TOS prevents a proper reaction.

NoPeople do not go to prison for being poor, or being a minority, they go to prison for breaking the law. If you don’t break the law, you have a 99% chance to avoid prison.
The idea that white people somehow profit from non-white imprisonment is racist and ridiculous. The idea that the rich somehow profit from jailing the poor is equally silly. The reality is that poor people are usually much more inclined to support harsher law enforcement and incarceration than rich people. The whole bleeding heart coddling of criminals is mostly an elitist, upper middle class, white thing. Sheriff Joe’s support comes from working class people, his biggest opponents are upper middle class liberals.
Then how come we only seem to do this to unrepresented poorWhen was the last time that you saw Bernie Madoff marched out on a chain gang in pink undies?
Pink UndiesSheriff Joe started the pink underwear back in the 1980s, and even sold them in malls during Christmas. My oldest son bought a pair.
But, Joe has become the biggest thug in the country. I have seen pictures of him laughing and joking with known neo-Nazis. I also believe that Palin is a closeted neo-Nazi. She is truly a bigot. They are a crappy pair to draw to.
I haven’tBut I would support that. A billion in stolen money = alot of picked up soda bottles. Actually if it was up to me, he would be put on a podium and pelted with vegetables. Just because some very rich OJ/Madoff types can sometimes skirt justice, doesn’t mean we should let everyone else go as well.
“Sheriff Joe” is a thugand a bully and a corrupt slimebag.
He and his cronies have been under Federal investigation for over a year for things like racial profiling (arrest brown-skinned people, ask questions later), carrying out personal political vendettas against local judges and county officials, and not adequately and safely maintaining his jails.
He loves to be on Faux Newz and CNN and with whomever else will give him a microphone. Agreeing with dyssonance above, I have heard that “the most dangerous place to be is between Joe Arpaio and a camera.”
Oh, btwYou have an idea what fascism is? That would be news.
Wait a minuteSo, in his view, the men wear pink undies, and the women wear white undies. So he gives Palin pink? Is this an homage to what he seems to see as a macho “grizzly” image?
How many has Joe killed? How many million of taxpayer dollars have been paid in blood money for wrongful death suits?
I forget exactly which relative of his has the contract to provide canteen services, at 3 times the price of neighbouring counties.
I’m in Australia. But even we’ve heard of him. And read the newspapers – those whose editors he hasn’t arrested (again) this week.
Black and WhiteBecause it’s impossible that some people are given less harsh penalties than they should because of inherent bias, while at the same time, other people are getting harsher penalties because of inherent bias?
Or are you trying to say that killing trans people and smoking a little pot are on the same footing?
“Who are these tens of thousands of innocents who languish in out dungeons because rich people want to oppress them? “Anyone in jail/prison for possession of drugs.
Anyone in jail/prison for inability to navigate the court system sufficiently well enough to follow hyper-technical court/administrative procedures whilst unsuccessfully attempting to pay exorbitant fines and plutocratic-wet-dream ‘court costs’ imposed for the petty, nit-picking non-crime crimes that, if the teabaggers were actually interested in ‘smaller government,’ the teabaggers would actually be protesting about instead of prancing around in their George-Wallace-ism-drenched, neo-Deliverance drag.
Sex appeal sells votesNeed I say more?
Really now?
Let’s say I take a course of action, X, which is against the law. That alone might not be enough to get me into prison. If I’m white and/or middle-class, it’s quite possible that charges surrounding X will be dropped, or I might be given a light fine or community service, while if I were neither white nor middle-class the charges associated with X would be much more harsh, a deal would not be offered, and I’d end up with an extended prison sentence. This is supposed to be a fair “justice” system?
Yep.Exactly what I was thinking.
