I’m glad to see this local story receive national play. Joy Behar had on Southerners on New Ground (SONG) director Caitlin Breedlove, who, along with her partner, was kicked out of Cameron Village Shopping Center by a security guard because their innocent kiss and general affection were deemed “inappropriate.”
The head of York Properties met with Breedlove and apologized. A York spokesperson said that the officer involved was immediately suspended. The supervising officer and all security officers will receive additional sensitivity training.

Since the mall is taking steps to work this outIt’s important to continue working with them. Calling people out is critical to illuminating bias…letting them make amends is the only way to go forward. Otherwise, we will be sitting on little islands separated by hate sharks patrolling the waters between us.
Which means “they” have won.
I totally agreeWhatever the motivation, the people in charge at the management company have said the right things and (so far) done the right things. All that remains is for locals to monitor the situation to make sure that going forward we are treated the same as any other patrons.
I’d personally like to see some public pats on the back directed their way. If our side continues to make a stink about what happened, it starts looking like we can’t take “yes” for an answer.
