He wants to talk about Fruit Loops? EqualityNC will send State Rep Larry Brown an all-you-can-eat bonanza…
Over the years, you've no doubt heard plenty of derogatory language targeting the LGBT community. Equality NC supporters, volunteers, and staff are regularly the targets of such slurs, ranging from the unmentionable to the downright silly. (“Homosexualist activists” comes to mind.) And although some of these terms make us roll our eyes, the sentiment they represent is anything but funny.
Last week, State Representative Larry Brown from Kernersville sent an e-mail to 60 of his fellow Republicans in reaction to Equality NC Foundation's announcement of this year's legislative leadership award, which will be presented to NC House Speaker Joe Hackney at the 2010 Equality Gala next month. Rep. Brown's e-mail reads:
“I hope all the queers are thrilled to see him. I am sure there will be a couple legislative fruitloops there in the audience.”
Queers? Fruitloops? Really, Rep. Brown?
As of this morning, Rep. Brown has not apologized to his LGBT and allied constituents, nor have any of the 60 colleagues who received the e-mail spoken out against his use of bigoted language.
Well, if it's fruitloops Rep. Brown wants, then that's what we'll give him!
From now until Monday, October 11th, at 5pm, each donation you make to Equality NC in Rep. Brown's name will come with a box of Froot Loops cereal to be delivered to his office, complete with your personal message.Let's show Rep. Brown and all of our elected officials that anti-LGBT slurs–and the unfair and outdated beliefs that spur them–have no place in our discourse. And let's give Rep. Brown a tangible reminder of the people of our state who refuse to put up with such trash talk by sending him Froot Loops!

CUE WRONG ANSWER BUZZER!!!
Sorry, kids. That’s a stupid idea that will do more to reinforce the slur “fruits” everytime the story is repeated than embarrass this asshat.
What he did was serious and deserves a response that frames it that way not a sight gag that explodes in the hands of its bearers.
There are powerful uses of symbolism, such as the recent delivery of gay vet combat boots to Sen. Webb’s office [which may have contributed to his voting for cloture] and childish, unintended consequence pranks like this.
Please stop.
The note I sent to Brown along with my contribution to Equality NCDear Rep. Brown,
Let it never be said that the LGBT community (“queers,” to you) isn’t accommodating. Here are the requested Fruit Loops. Alas, their expiration date may surpass yours: I think you’ll find that even hard-core bigots like yourself need to change your ways or be voted out by an electorate that is increasingly disinclined to support homophobes.
The choice is yours.
Best,
Nancy
As much as I wish otherwise……this effort is one huge waste of time. The guy is running unopposed so exactly what does this effort seek to accomplish? His job is secure and he knows it, so why should he care what we say?
I think we’d be far better off concerning ourselves with candidates we actually have a hope of beating instead of wasting time and effort on an election that’s already been decided.
Seriously?Defining the bounds of discourse is not a waste of time.
Hostile environments do not magically appear in a vacuum.
Letting this type of bigotry spout forth unchallenged in a caucus (directed) email list would have been an error.
It is wholly correct to call attention to the level of discourse about LGBT issues at the NC General Assembly.
Rep. Brown may not opposed this cycle, but this story has already gathered the comments of at least 3 other NC House members to date.
I’m sure their constituents — and the silence of other representatives, will be noticed by voters.
No representative — or story — is an island.
talking about discourse, here’s anotherA blurt in the Rutgers student newspaper. Aravosis flagged this, but you can give your spleen a workout as well, reading this obtuse drivel.

You’d think they’d have a little more discretion, or at least sense of timing.
From his opponentDavid W Moore, FRONT PAGE HEADLINES:
Winston Salem Journal, Oct 06,2010
Current District 73 republican & general assemblyman, Larry Brown of Kernersville espoused the identical vile rhetoric that today’s republican candidates and office holders perform for their constituents everyday. His demeanor and temperament as vulgar as it is, is absolutely reflective of the policies and positions he brings to district 73, and the Forsyth / Kernersville area. It, and he, is a complete disgrace to North Carolina, and the goals and ambitions of our neighborhoods, churches, working families, young adults and children.
It is true that he is currently unopposed on the North Carolina ballot for this November. However, his total lack of understanding, irresponsible voting record, and lack of care for his district has not gone unnoticed.
Mr. David W Moore, CEO of Moore Aerospace Service & Consulting, a democrat who has been instrumental in cutting edge aviation development (ie.. Boeing 787, Gulfstream G650, Project Liberty, FEDEX and airline creation with T.A. McArtor the chairman of North American Airbus) has established a 2012 campaign for District 73 General Assembly (http://www.DavidWMoore.net/) & (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=128698590499636).
With the unemployment levels at their present rate, and obstructionism running rampant within our political system, our options are becoming narrower, and the hate-mongers are feeling confident. I will end this detrimental practice along with this perpetrator in district 73 during the general election of 2012. Expanding the aerospace business activity of the Triad area this year and next is my ultimate goal. A goal I have succeeded in extremely well with this month. Kernersville, and North Carolina needs residents with high paying jobs, and businesses that are occupied, not empty. Mr. Brown has not provided that during his tenure, nor does he have the knowledge to provide this in the future.
Whereas I do not intend to enter the race as a write-in at this time, I will not discourage it. However, I will state that the residents that live within district 73 deserve a better legislator than an outdated, self full-filling man who knows no better than to utter ignorance from his brain matter, while his district goes unfull-filled.
Regards,
David W Moore
Democrat for disrtrict 73
North Carolina General Assembly 2012
