This story is so bizarre. I can’t be sure what was running through Rick Sanchez’s mind, but somehow the intimacy of doing a radio program must have lulled him into a state of mind that allowed that little sensor in your head that stops you from saying something supremely stupid/racist/insane to malfunction. (The Box):
CNN has fired anchor Rick Sanchez, following a radio rant Thursday night where he called Jon Stewart a “bigot,” blamed CNN brass for discrimination against him and insinuated that the media industry is controlled by Jews.Sanchez had gone on Pete Dominick’s Sirius XM show to promote his new book, “Conventional Idiocy.” While on air, he called Stewart a “bigot,” implied that CNN is controlled by Jews and that the network passed him over for promotion because he’s Latino.
The full transcript is here . It’s worth reading because no paraphrasing can capture the meltdown. I’m not particularly interested in his attacks on Jon Stewart; Sanchez has been the butt of his jokes, and Sanchez sees that as racist. All Rick’s done is give Stewart more to poke fun at.
Where Sanchez goes off the rails starts with his reference to “elite Northeast establishment liberals” that devolves into denying that Jews are an oppressed minority and are holding minorities back, by extension, on CNN.
There are a couple of things that most of the Sanchez-bashers are ignoring because of Rick’s anti-Semitism: 1) the reality of being a minority anchor on that network, and 2) CNN’s history of keeping bigot Lou Dobbs on the air, never reprimanding him for the numerous ON-AIR lies and inflammatory comments about Latinos and other minorities (remember Lou and Obama Waffles?).
Case in point:
RS- I had a guy who works here at CNN who’s a top brass come to me and
say, ‘You know what, I don’t want you to –PD- ‘Will you wash this dish for me, Sanchez?’
RS- No no, see that’s the thing; it’s more subtle. White folks usually don’t see it. But we do – those of us who are minorities and women see it sometimes too from men in authority. Here, I’ll give you my example its this ‘You know what, I don’t want you anchoring anymore, I really don’t see you as an anchor, I see you more as a reporter, I see you more as a John Quinones – you know the guy on ABC. That’s what he told me. He told me he saw me as John Quinones. Now, did he not realize that he was telling me, ‘When I see you I think of Hispanic reporters’? Cause in his mind I can’t be an anchor. An anchor is what you give the high-profile white guys, you know.
Rick’s not pulling that out of his ass. Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Carol Jenkins, the former president of the Women’s Media Center, who had a storied 23-year career as a news anchor at New York’s local WNBC-TV. She anchored the 6PM newscast (and won an Emmy). She has said much the same thing (sans Sanchez’s slur, of course) about how female anchors are similarly siloed. One news director told her flat-out that viewers “want to see a man in prime time.” She asked what studies or polls he was basing his view on. He had none to cite. Yes, that’s right. Just a “gut feeling” about what people want to see.
The bottom line is that it’s hard to break that glass ceiling, a point Rick Sanchez could have made without resorting to his Jewish conspiracy theory.
Anyway, I suppose that Rick can continue his book tour and think about his next options…and about that broken sensor.
And about Lou “The Brown Menace Is Upon Us” Dobbs? Why the flip didn’t CNN have the hair-trigger trap door for him? The YouTubes of him going off on-air, on the network are numerous. And the Obama Waffles incident at the Values Voter Summit in 2008, Lou stopped by the vendor table to give a slamming endorsement of the product (“My wife will love this!”)? That didn’t cost Lou his job.

It doesn’t excuse Sanchez’s remarks, but it does call into question the objectivity of using bigotry as a principal reason for dismissal at CNN.

wheels within wheels?Pam, good reminder that Dobbs still dribbles, I mean, comments on CNN.
What if this was really bout ratings? What if CNN was waiting for an excuse to dump Sanchez because his ratings stink and/or he’s terrible to work with?
won’t know that one, LevThe timing of the dismissal is suspect, after all, he still had his Rick’s List day slot to go back to. The “terrible to work with” is unfortunately usually the last reason an on-air personality is given the boot for if they are popular with viewers. Sanchez had quite a following because of his grasp of social networking.
CNN’s statement is standard minimalist HR-speak used everywhere to avoid any liability, so unless someone squeals from within, we can’t be 100% sure of anything.
Why not Dobbs?Jonathan Klein. He’s outa there now.
What the hell was Rick thinking?I watch Rick almost every day in the background while working at home. The sad thing is that he was one of the most pro-gay CNN anchors (even more so than AC). There were a few times when he took on Limbaugh when everyone else was afraid of him. His rant against Jews was truly bizarre and I don’t understand where that was coming from.
what makes you think this wasn’tplanned by sanchez, well in advance? he goes on, does his obviously job ending rant, and shows up monday as FOX’s newest hire. his very first story, is himself as “victim” of those brutal jews running cnn.
and the FOX heads eat it up!
tell me you didn’t, for just the briefest of moments, envision this. hehe
Is this CNN?I would like to hear James Earl Jones say that. Also, the firing of Rick “Dirty” Sanchez would be perfect fodder for Fox News. I could imagine Sean Hannity discuss with killjoy Brent Bozell about this and how this relates to the imaginary “liberal bias”.
my opinionis that it’s because CNN already has a certain reputation in the Jewish community – it is jokingly known as “Crescent News Network.” Right or wrong, that’s what it’s called in Brooklyn. Having RS stay in the job would mean confirming that reputation.
CNN policy clarifiedIf a Hispanic CNN personality, speaking on a non-CNN medium, while complaining about the subtle racism he experienced from his white bosses makes a racist inference about his bosses’ bosses, there shall be zero tolerance and it will call for immediate dismissal.
If a white CNN personality, speaking on his primetime show on CNN’s main channel makes outright racist statements and lies about Hispanics, nightly, for years, he shall be allowed to continue until he feels ready to retire.
More lightThis is from the NYT and confirms my suspicion that the story had something to do with power and upper echelons not liking him:
I thought it happened too quickly for it to only be about his comments. Whoever got rid of Klein apparently wanted his buddy out, too.
None of that in any way undercuts his complaints about discrimination as a Cuban-American or the fact that Border-crazed Dobbs is still spouting.
Where his head was atI’d catch him now and then when working in the kitchen and I often wondered if he was drunk, high or something in between. He just seemed too weirdly garrulous, his associations too loose. I think that’s why Jon Stewart made that famous crack about him, cocaine, and the ant.
Stewart obviously got under his skin:
(NYT)
And so he turned his personal shame into contempt for his critic. A sad, but common emotional dynamic.
laughableFirst the assertion that Rick Sanchez is anything but Caucasian of Latino heritage, if it walks like a duck, looks like a duck and sounds like a duck…then a duck. Secondly, look at the CNN line up and we see a rainbow of color and gender. The truth, and it is all over his behavior, he is a loose cannon who can’t be trusted in the anchor chair.
He Was A ReporterThe one thing about Sanchez was his role as a reporter and Dobbs as a talking head. Dobbs was supposed to be an idiot on a daily basis. Sanchez was supposed to get the “news”.
Sanchez failed because he stopped by a reporter when he actually spoke his mind. His firing was rather fast, but MSNBC has been doing fast replacements too.
Once every three months?Man, if he were Bill O’Reilly, he would be pissed.
There actually is a difference you highlighted1) is insubordination. 2) isn’t.
2, collectively over time, is definitely worse; however, that doesn’t change the fact that 1 is really bad.
all a matter of perspectiveIronically, among the stories listed on Google News covering Sanchez’ self-destruction, one was headlined:
Anti-Arab CNN axes Sanchez after anti-Jew remarks
…but the country code (.ir, for Iran) is worth noting. An odd hook for reporting on this incident. Even their piece noted CNN’s pro-Arab reputation, however skeptically.
No SurpriseHe made alot of noise tossing the race card against the tea parties and various right wingers. Seems like a classic case of projection, he was accusing others of thinking what he himself thought in secret. He is like a bigot pastor who attacks gays from the pulpit, only to go to a gay prostitute after the service.
Either way, he was an awful anchor and I am glad he is gone. He was loud, obnoxious, and full of himself but not in a fun or entertaining way like Olbermann or Glenn Beck, his ratings sucked.
But its definitely a teachable moment, I have long ago observed that the people that always talk about race, and are constantly accusing others of racism, are usually hatemongers themselves.
My feeling exactly. He thinks he’s been mocked every day?
The other thing I think is going on here is a profound social shame situation from earlier in his life. Smart kids somewhere made fun of him for being a doofus, and some were probably from slightly more privileged backgrounds than he was–or he saw it that way. He comes across as someone who’s never gotten over childhood or adolescent mockery and reinterprets current jibes as a continuation (though I doubt he’s conscious of it).
Tell me Rick Sanchez deserved an anchor jobafter you watch this
http://www.thedailyshow.com/wa…
I have always found Rick Sanchez to be unwatchable, period. He should never have had his own afternoon time slot, and he certainly didn’t deserve the primetime spot.
No doubt there is rampant discrimination in media. But maybe someone was just trying to tell Rick that he was a lousy anchor and should focus on being a pretty good reporter.
The dumbing-down of bigotry
I’ve no doubt that the expectations of the network bosses are informed by subtle (and perhaps overt) unquestioned bigotry. But Sanchez makes himself look like a fool in complaining of Stewart’s “bigotry.”
When asked what he means by calling Stewart a bigot, Sanchez replies that Stewart is hostile towards those who disagree with him.
Oh. So having well thought-out opinions on social issues and arguing vigorously against opponents of those opinions is a form of bigotry? Disagreeing with your opinion is a form of bigotry?
I would call this stupid except I fear that would expose me as bigoted against imbeciles.
