And now you see why the NAACP’s Ben Jealous has an uphill battle to address homophobia in the socially conservative black church. Note “Bishop” Eddie Long didn’t say he was innocent of the charges against him. He pompously said he’s fighting as David against Goliath
“I’ve been accused, I’m under attack. I want you to know, as I said earlier, that I am not a perfect man,” he said. “But this thing, I’m going to fight.”
Long added that he’s “not the man that has been portrayed on the television. That’s not me.”
“And I want you to know one other thing,” he told the cheering crowd Sunday morning. “I feel like David against Goliath, but I’ve got five rocks and I haven’t thrown one yet.”
He then turned on his heel and walked away from the pulpit, ending a 20-minute address that was peppered with references to Scripture and often interrupted by loud standing ovations from worshippers.
Take a read of “Why black church culture rejects homosexuality” by Shayne Lee over at CNN. I’ll have more to say later.

Bishop Long John calls it a “high tech lynching” in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5…..
Ah ha! Another self-inflicted ‘VICTIM’…. …and no Pam I don't think that CNN article typical 'the Bible-tells-me-so.' gobbedly-gook should work as an excuse for any adult, esspecially a socialogist! Talk about pandering! Just because we have ‘always’ though/done it a certain way is no excuse for thinking on ones own!
Becoming an adult is not easy. One needs to examine ALL facets of their beliefs and opinions.. in the light of current events and history.. retaining those that are positive and discarding those that are harmful.ERIKSON's Adolescence (12-19)
Thus not questioning and chosing one’s own path and belief system, leaves one stuck here in adolescence..and prevents further maturity and acceptance of adult roles.
Here is why we need to be able to help this particular age group of queer youth
realize that there are those who will help them find supportive adults, if they do not find them in their families, schools or churches.
David in spandex.
…and cruises town in a $350,000 Bentley.
Shayne Lee ignores the obviousFor a sociologist, his analysis is pretty shallow. He says this:
But he never explains why this of all so-called biblical mandates is so salient. If religious African-Americans adhere to this one, then they also cannot eat shellfish, they cannot wear mixed fabrics, they cannot wear pants if they’re women and on and on through one time-bound proscription after another. A divorced couple can’t even remarry each another!
Turning the Bible into a buffet where one can pick and choose is a subject worthy of insight.
But all he’s done is tell us what we already know.
For a smart, thorough, intriguing analysis of the so-called “abomination”–check this out:

Hubby’s WAPO comment…
and the next one is even more specific.
Not “Attack”Counter Attack…he is accused of attacking first…with molestation…aka rape.
Oh, lord….And I thought he was “stepping down”. The only thing he’s stepping in is more “deep doo-doo” as the father of a ‘friend’ of his put it.
power dynamicsyes, he is poor li’l David, goin’ up bravely against those POWERFUL GOLIATH CHILDREN.
glad i’m not the only one that did a scooby doo over that!hello, earth to “bishop”! goliath was the powerful giant and david was the young man-boy (with God on his side, i might add) in that story.
methinks the poor “bishop” has the roles reversed.
I’m not perfectThat line was the admission of guilt right there.
Doubt ItAlthough he is a lover not a fighter in the lawsuits, he really does not want to lose the Bentley and the $$$.
This week should be interesting as the next wave of abused guys file. Maybe some more explicit cellphone pics will show up too.
The irony…in his “David and Goliath” remark is amazing. ”Bishop” Long is clearly irony challenged.
It obviously was.But my guess is that he meant it, and his adherents will interpret, as a plea for the inevitable forgiveness. Remember the mantra: Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven. Which, in practical terms, means you can get away with anything–quite literally anything–as long as you keep shouting Jesus’ name when you get caught.
Calling Ray Stevens…Would Jesus rape a young boy on his television show?
“you can get away with anything–quite literally anything–as long as you keep shouting Jesus’ name when you get caught”
AMEN!
I was raised in a “Holy Roller” denomination, and Long’s church is just a variation on it. Unlike more mainline denominations, they focus less on the “good news” [Gospel] than the “bad news” of always judging someone else, which, ironically, if they play it right, works in their favor when they’re caught themselves. “Brother Shit for Brains has been preaching about sinners’ need to repent forever. He sinned. He repented. So now he can go back to demonizing others.”
Yeah, it called“Once saved, forever saved”
it’s*
David, all rightAnd how long have you had this thing for Michelangelo’s “David”, Reverend? Or was it Donatello’s “David”?
…or David Cassidy.
It will be interestingHe’s got the money to buy the silence of these guys, so we’ll see if there’s a “settlement.” You know, not because he did anything wrong, but it’s just in the best interests of all the parties involved. He really wants to help these poor disturbed guys, and trials and all that are just so potentially embarassing to the boys and harmful to the ministry, you know. So keep those contributions coming in so I can pay to sweep this under the rug. [snark]
In America we are innocent until proven guilty, but it is interesting that “Bishop” hasn’t bothered to actually deny the charges, but merely vowed to defend himself.
