I am not sh*tting you — look at this Facebook ad that Harry Reid is running today. Sent in from a reader’s screencap…
Reid Needs Your Help: “The far-right wing is running attack ads against Harry Reid in NV because he’s standing up for DADT repeal. Watch the ad and help fight.”
All he has been thinking about at this point is saving his *ss. It’s politics, you know. Makes you feel like opening the gAyTM to help out. Any takers?
I’m sure he wants the LGBT vote after all that hard work and keen strategy, since Joe Biden said the WH tossed off a stop-loss in exchange for the votes, eh?
***
UPDATE: Looks like Harry has a “Joe Solmonese’s promises at HRC Carolinas Dinner” moment of his own. Joe Sudbay pointed me back to a post on Sept. 2, 2009 (no video though):
Reid addressed almost all of the key LGBT issues in his speech. A full version of the remarks is after the break, but this excerpt is key:
The Senate will soon outlaw discrimination in the workplace by making it illegal to fire, refuse to hire or refuse to promote anyone simply based on his or her sexual orientation or gender identity. It’s called the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and I am committed to passing it out of the Senate and sending it to President Obama for his signature.I also reiterate to you my pledge to work with Senator Gillibrand to end Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Permanently – once and for all.
A commitment for a vote on ENDA is key. The Senate hasn’t addressed that issue since 1996. The pledge on DADT helps — and we’re waiting for the Senate bill.
And how about this good old days knee-slapper from July 14, 2009:
“I would make it permanent,” [Reid] added, suggesting that he would permanently suspend discharges.Reid’s comments gave a boost to an amendment that Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is considering offering to the DOD legislation that would suspend investigations of soldiers suspected to be gay — thereby stopping discharges of soldiers under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy — until the end of the 111th Congress.

If I were a voter in Nevadaat this point I would be trying to figure out how to trade my ballot in for a keno ticket.
I don’t get it. Reid got a vote…And he leaned hard on his fellow Senators. And he said time and time again that he wants to get rid of DADT this year. And he still wants to do another vote.
And we should sh*t on him? And coddle those Senators who hid their NAY votes behind nonsensical “procedure” excuses?
Because Sharron Angle is SO GREAT!She founded the extremely homophobic “Independent American Party of Nevada”. She took money from a group that favors the death penalty aainst “sodomites”. She’s said repeatedly that she does NOT want DADT repealed, does NOT want ENDA passed, and does NOT find us “morally acceptable”.
And now, she & Harry Reid are somehow just the same?
Again, I don’t get it. I know Dems are far from perfect. When this site started the “GayTM boycott”, I was down for it. I didn’t vote for Obama in the primary because I wasn’t impressed by his “fierce advocacy”. But now, it seems some on the ‘net just don’t want to work with any Dems on anything.
OK. Enjoy the GOP bigotry.
Reed staged a piece of political kabuki. He had enough Republican votes to break the filibuster. He then came up with his amendment limitation deal breaker. I do not believe that he ever intended to bring DADT repeal to an actual vote. The whole thing was an election stunt.
sorry….but, Reid’s office says he told the repugs they would get to offer their ammendments. And the repug reply to that offer was “we don’t trust you, so we’ll pass on that thanks” Rachel Maddow had the documentation on this last night.
So, I don’t know who to believe in this anymore.
How about this. Tell Harry Reid to get Obama to issue a stop loss order and have his DOJ not appeal the DADT court loss. Once that actually HAPPENS, then I’ll send him some money. But, I won’t do it just on his saying he will support that. I need real results now.
Sharron Angle is his Spiro AgnewNixon knew that Congress would never impeach him so long as impeachment would mean Pres. Agnew – but then along game V.P. Ford.
Reid knows that no matter how badly LGBTs – and most other Dem voters – would like him to somehow get lost in Area 51, they’ll never vote against him by voting for Auntie Angle.
…Rachel Maddow said there was no amendment limitation deal breaker. If the choice is – believe Maddow or believe Nicholson – I’ll take Rachel any day of the week.
Victimhood is BORINGthis ad lends credence to the kabuki narrative.
I’m surprised they even waited til AFTER the vote to run it.
Harry Reid HATES being Leader, he LOVES to play the victim role…its SO MUCH EASIER to say “Look what those MEAN REPUBLICANS are doing!” than to actually provide leadership & STAND for something!
Victimhood is BORING and I sure as hell won’t reward it.

Ugly processPolitics makes prostitutes of us all. No matter how much we gripe, unless we are Nevada voters, it don’t mean a thing.
I sat there watching the vote.McConnel got up and offered the amendment deal on the floor and Reed got up and nixed it. That seemed to me to be pretty clear confirmation. I of course have no direct knowledge of what went on in the back room.
DEAREST PAM: STILL URGING YOU TO WATCH RACHEL’S and O’DONNELL’s DECONSTRUCTIONS….
…and if you STILL feel the need to work this absurd Log Cabin Repug HATE REID meme which requires one to believe that Senate Repugs are as pure as the driven snow – maybe consider checking the Use By date on your meds. :- )
Let’s go to the videos …..below….
what “deal” did McConnell offer?Did McConnell offer a deal for a stated number of republican amendments for for unlimited amendments?
He made a public proposal aboutamendments which sounded to me like the arrangement that Collins and Snow were saying they wanted in order to vote for cloture. I certainly don’t claim to be an expert on the arcane rituals of the senate, but that’s what it sounded like to me.
perhaps you should check out the updateon this post. Reid’s up for a Joe S. Award right about now.
Lies, damned lies, and Democratcis’ promisesLet’s not forget that when Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House she said the Dems would stop the war.
How’d that turn out?
well what I heard both Collins and Snowesay was that they wanted was UNLIMITED amendments. Collins had complained that Reid was going to limit the number of amendments that would be allowed.
It is standard Senate procedure, despite what republicans say now, to work out a deal beforehand for both the number and type of amendments that would be accepted. But, the republicans were not going to accept anything but unlimited amendments this time. For two reasons, they wanted to offer “poison pill” amendments that would kill the DADT provision such as adding more members of the military required to sign off on it and they wanted to drag out the time it would take to debate the bill so that this could never be completed.

Offering poison pill amendmentswould be a fairly meaningless gesture since the Democrats easily had the simple majority required to block their adoption.
they were poison pillamendments that were designed to be very difficult for the good ole blue dog dems to vote against because it could have been used against them in election advertising. One specific one would have been an amendment to add the other Service Chiefs to the sign-off procedure. Many dems would have found it difficult to vote against that. It can be made to sound reasonable in sound bytes. Hey, we just want to make sure that the head of each of the services agrees with the assessment blah, blah, blah. The repugs would do this knowing full well that the head of the Marines would NEVER sign-off.
That’s a real streeeeeetch…
Politicians make promises? Color me SHOCKED! Then check out the latest In the Life…Kirsten Gillebrand promised repeal, too….wanna demonize her next? [Tthough she might have said by the end of the year, so, technically both she and Reid have time if not a hope.]
In addition to virtually begging Obama in June of LAST YEAR for leadership to help end the ban legislatively in remarks to reporters [as Carl Levin did the same month] and in a later letter to him, Reid said THEN he thought Obama should freeze discharges.
EXACTLY HOW in the context of your pointless mud sligging campaign is his elaborating on that the next month in relation to Gillibrand’s aborted effort “a knee-slapper”? Sorry, hyperbole is hard to translate…are you asserting he wasn’t sincere if he’d had the power?
The ONLY time I recall Little Joe ever supporting a freeze was the same month when Chris Matthews had him on the air live and wouldn’t let him not answer…..never to be repeated again.
And, oh yeah, call me when Harry Reid has his OWN FLAG!
I do vote in Nevada. I know that Democrats and Republicans are more alike than not, and that they’re as corrupt as a peccary is mean and that they lie, cheat, steal and break promises with equal ease.
In the Senate race here both candidates are accusing each other of promoting economic collapse and not giving a rats ass about working people. They’re both right.
I also know that in the State of Nevada I can vote for “none of these candidates” and since there are no socialist candidates on the ballot I’ll do just that. I feel sorry for people in states who don’t have that option but you still have an option. On Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010 and Tuesday, November 4th, 2012 vote left or just sit it out (unless there are important referenda on the ballot).
The Democrats were supposedto have the 51 votes necessary to pass the bill with DADT in it. I would seriously doubt that anyone who felt politically compelled to vote for such an amendment as that would have been willing to vote for the repeal amendment in its present form. Ergo, if the head count was correct, then the amendment wouldn’t have passed if proposed. I don’t buy the idea that Reed was somehow compelled to dodge amendments.
Par for your course, Richard…
You don’t even have the numbers right. They needed SIXTY votes not 51 to “move” the bill to a separate vote FOR passage. They got 56.
FAIL.
well, you don’t have to “buy” itfor it to be true. The intent was to water the bill down even further so that actual repeal would never happen.
Once they got clotureall that would be required for actual passage would be 51.
what happensif “none of these candidates” wins the election?
what happensif “none of these candidates” wins the election?
FearmongeringYeah, we know. That’s all the Democratic Party has left.
Good luck motivating the base with it.
Enjoy sabotaging the boycott and undermining the gay community by letting the Democratic Party bash you again while you just crawl back and beg for more.
We were the bait, the chum in the water for the sharksThe President had already publically announced that he would veto the military appropriations bill because of a piece of pork that was grossly wasteful.
Rather than risking the political fallout of a veto “against our troops,” someone came up with the idea of adding two other major issues that would rouse the Republicans to spare the President of that embarrassment by “chumming the water” with gays and Hispanics.
As the great white shark has no real brain, Senator John McCain, representing a state where you apparently cannot take a step without tripping over a headless torso, unwittingly did the President a huge service.
We were used, our desire for equality was used, and Rahm Emanuel no doubt celebrated the President’s victory with a very good bottle of Dom Perignon.
The candidate with the highest vote wins. “none of these candidates” cannot win unless there are no candidates.
Is this still AMERICA?Gee Whiz Louise! What the heck is wrong with our politicians?! Why the F*** don’t they want EQUALITY for us??!!’
I can’t believe we are STILL dealing with this shit (excuse my French) … in 2010 no less!
Our country wants that UNCONSTITUTIONAL law off our books.
Why or why are freaking politicians still fighting EQUALITY?
If it takes getting rid of some Democrats to get us there, so be it.
The days of voting for someone with a “D” even when they BETRAY us are ovah!
That’s pretty pointless then.If 50%+ of the voters disapprove of the listed candidates, one of the candidates takes the office anyway…
It’s basically saying “we disapprove of you” in a meaningless way since there’s nothing you can do about it for six years at which point whatever symbolism there was in that will have been long forgotten.
It would be better if ‘none of these candidates’ could win. But that’s not going to happen.
Nevada lives off the money of people who believe they’re on the verge of winning a million bucks any minute now and is a showcase for the banana republic approach to politics in the US.
In any case, What’s really pointless is voting for any Democrat or any Republican.
Having betrayed everyone but Goldman Sachs and BP, the Democrats ‘base’ is not exactly enthuiastic.
The Democrats are going to get clobbered because they deserve it.
You are breathtakingly naiveThis vote was set up to fail from the start. It was the Dems getting the GOP to kill DADT repeal so the Dems could run around claiming to be big bad gay allies and shake us down for more money. But they did nothing to actually make passage happen. Here’s a hint: When the President is sitting in the Oval Office making calls to sports teams but not to wavering Senators, you know the Senate vote is nothing but a set up.
homage to catatonia!Today’s news: no vote on tax cuts either.

The masterly art of parliamentary still life. If this is what Harry’s running on, then he’s really fried.
