BREAKING VIA TWITTER: @ladygaga Meet me in Portland, Maine 2moro, 9/20 to help repeal #DADT. I’m holding a Rally + speaking live in Deering Oaks Park http://bit.ly/cO4cY9
– Lady Gaga to her 6.3 million followers today
And she is marshalling her forces with focus — on Maine, a state with two Republican senators — who may be convinced to vote with Dems to break any McCain filibuster on DADT repeal language in the Def Auth bill. (SLDN):
Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), a national, legal services and policy organization dedicated to ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT), will be holding a grassroots rally with young people near the University of Southern Maine campus on Monday, September 20, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. ET, at Deering Oaks Park, Portland, ME, in a major Senate push to break the expected filibuster by Sen. John McCain of the National Defense Authorization Act, to which repeal is included. The key U.S. Senate vote is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday.“The votes to break McCain’s filibuster are not there. We need Sens. Snowe and Collins on board; they’re key to us breaking the filibuster,” said Aubrey Sarvis, Army veteran and executive director for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. ”With the vote less than 48 hours away, we need everyone supporting repeal to call the Senate. We’re bringing gay and straight service members to Portland to help make the case. And we’re proud to have the support of Lady Gaga to bring grassroots attention to repeal at a critical hour. Like Lady Gaga, all New England senators, indeed all 100 senators, Democrats and Republicans, need to engage in a real debate on this issue, and not just posture and spin this week over procedure and Senate rules.”
As we saw during the VMAs, Lady Gaga attended with service members affected by DADT (photo), and SLDN director of communications, Trevor Thomas, has acknowledged that the influence of Gaga on the lobbying process has made a substantial impact, and it’s needed again to reach out to even more people in the next 48 hours. (via Kerry Eleveld):
“We know that Lady Gaga can move young people,” Thomas said, noting that she has more followers on twitter than the president (@ladygaga edges out @BarackObama by nearly a million followers). He added that SLDN had been sending action alerts to its 80,000 subscribers asking them to call their senators for the past several weeks. Short of the Gaga intervention, he said his organization would simply be sending out the same action alert on Monday that it did on Friday.
The power of celebrity combined with the reach of social networking has changed the game for activism and spreading the word on short notice. It’s a larger reach than a press release or mailing list when you’ve got a clock ticking down on a critical legislative matter like this. Lady Gaga deserves incredible kudos for harnessing the energy of young people out there to press allies — and potential allies — to act.
Note: 1,000,000+ watched Lady Gaga’s call to action online; and 237,131 people visited SLDN’s action Site as a result — 91.62% were first-time visitors.

loving thisThis upcoming generation is so different in terms of bigotry–it’s good to see them voicing outrage. And while they don’t have money for lobbyists, they do have votes.
I like that some senators are making videos to reply to all the videos being sent them. Well, the smart ones are.
I am SO there! Will be bringing along the cameras etc…
I’m coming too!!I’ll be right there with ya, Mom!
You go Gaga! Please don’t forget the 66,000 active duty servicemembers and their families. Be the voice for those that must remain silent!
Excellent Work SLDNI must say, SLDN is doing fantastic work getting people ramped up to repeal DADT.

It would be great if Lady Gaga could lead a protest outside!
Many LGBT “yutes” (youth) don’t know about the background of Capleton and the other murder music performers http://bit.ly/cl8OnG
Portland, Maine LGBT “yutes” (youth) may even be planning to attend this show.
Capleton has at least four songs that call for the death of LGBT people and there is a YouTube video of him calling for the death of LGBT people dated 12/25/07 http://bit.ly/bk6FJn
Gaga is a true patriotA lot of people mock the so-called ‘Hollywood elite’. But in my opinion, Gaga is a true patriot. She is following through on every aspect of this issue and no one would ever question her dedication to glbt equality. This is what red-blooded American patriotism is all about.
Isn’t it SadI can’t believe that this hasn’t been taken care of already. Obama could have issued a ‘signing statement’ and set aside this discrimination on the basis of national security alone. What a crock.
I sincerely hope that these celebrity appearances make a difference. Meanwhile, I’m concerned with other “celebrity” appearances, notably:

Enjoy.
Thank you, Heathen07.I have been extraordinarily busy IRL and was not aware. Will make sure to spread the word up here. Great job and much appreciate the links!
Incorrect. The President cannot override a law with a signing statement. Back to civics class for you.
Goo Goo Gaga….DADT will be repealed. Now that the GOP Primaries have now all been held, it’s pretty much a statistical certainty. Those moderate Republicans who have had to act in a far-right manner to beat the Tea-baggers will mostly go back to their previous ways now, which in some ways will be a blessing.
I’m all for repealing DADT, though at the same time I am dismayed by the fact that nobody has realised that a Policy that’s just as bad as DADT will still be in place after this “repeal” is signed off on.
If Lady Gaga is so for equality, then why hasn’t she also raised the profile of Transgender and Intersex people who’d like to serve as well? Do LGB’s view Trans and Intersex folk as being a class below them, unworthy of help? Why haven’t the bloggers been asking SLDN, HRC, Servicemembers United, OutServe and others the same thing? And why is it that every single time a Trans-person asks “WHAT ON EARTH IS FUCKING HAPPENING” about a repeal of the Transgender/Intersex ban, the organisations above (and everybody else) crawl back into their shells and say “Oh, we’re talking about it….” while never giving a firm answer?
Nothing against Lady Gaga or anyone (plus I’m sorry for the swear-words), though I’m sick to fucking death of this. Would Lady Gaga use her Star power to eventually help T’s and I’s? Maybe, maybe not. Personally I doubt that even if she did at a later stage that it wouldn’t have anywhere near the impact that she’s having on the debate over the rights of Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals. If it’s the morally right thing to repeal DADT right now, then why isn’t it the Morally right thing to repeal these other issues at the same time, via other means?
Also GrrrlRomeo, while a Stop-Loss order from Obama wouldn’t work with DADT, it would get rid of the bans on Transgender and Intersex service-members. Why on earth that isn’t being promoted now when there’s no way that it can negatively influence a DADT repeal is beyond me.
I have never been so sadto be traveling and on vacation. I would normally be in my office building right across the street from the rally. I love that Gaga is throwing all her power behind this, though. She has such influence.
I’m for the filibuster.I would love to see McCain’s filibuster last for the next six years.
As much as I would like to see DADT repealed, it would like even more to see all of our wars defunded.
