There have always been two Americas.This is a schizophrenic nation and always has been.  There is the America that was born of a revolution by democratic visionaries like Tom Paine, and there is the America that was built on genocide and slavery. There is the America whose Constitution and Bill of Rights are models of freedom and justice to the world, and there is the America whose social and political ideals are set aside at the drop of a hat. It has always been a question of which America was in the ascendancy at a given time.
Since the Reagan years (at least) and continuing through both Bushes, Clinton and Obama, it is that second, ugly America.  More and more so all the time.  While it is tempting to write Pastor Jones off as a deluded nutcase, he is emblematic of the kind of country we live in and will for years to come.  We must all be vigilant and do what we can to ensure that the first America comes back to the fore.  If it ever will.

The scariest thing is that taken together, they really do form an impenetrable and internally consistent belief system.

For instance, the recent story of Obama’s endorsement of the masque being built at ground zero.  Not only does this incite anger, but truly insults and grieves the victims and families of 9/11. Right Wing Extreme says it does believe that Islam is not a religion but a cult; however the group is determined to lead the lost to Christ and restore our nation’s constitution.
