Last week the Mexican Supreme Court ruled that Mexico City’s marriage equality law was constitutional. Today the Court ruled by a 9-2 vote that those marriages are valid nationally. This means that even if other Mexican states don’t have marriage equality laws, they have to treat LGBT couples married in Mexico City the same as straight couples.
Mexico City’s marriage equality law includes a clause granting couples the right to adopt. The court will take up that question this Thursday.
¡No es matrimonio gay, es matrimonio igualitario!
It’s not gay marriage, it’s marriage equality!

When is Amerika going to stop being a third world countrywhen it comes to marriage equality. We are surrounded by equality, Canada to the north and now Mexico to the south.
This isn’t exactly “equality” yetThe ruling just means that other places in Mexico have to treat couples married in Mexico City equally. Those couples still can’t get married outside of Mexico City, though. That’s not equality, really. Close, but not just yet.
well i for one am taking a day to celebrateplenty of time to find shortcomings tomorrow.
It’s closer than anything we haveand closer than anything we’re going to get, if our False Advocate has anything to say about it.
VIVA Mexico!
Still better than the U.S.…where I could marry my same-sex spouse of 12 years in Iowa or Massachusetts and our marriage would not count anywhere but in those two and a small handful of other states — which doesn’t include where we live (New Mexico).
We really are becoming a backward country.
